Why and How to Replace the Fuel Line on a 2011 Suzuki KingQuad 750AXi 4x4

A fuel hose on a 2011 KingQuad 750AXi does not wear out from pumping gasoline through it. It ages out, slowly and quietly, until the day it cannot hold pressure any longer. Since this 722cc single is injected and the line stays pressurized after shutdown, understanding that aging process is what lets you replace the hose on your terms rather than on the trail.
The Slow Breakdown of Fuel Hose
A new hose is flexible because its wall carries plasticizers that let the polymer move. Heat radiating off the engine steadily drives those compounds out, and as the wall hardens it stops absorbing vibration and chassis flex. From there, ordinary use crazes the outer surface, and that crazing works inward until a fissure reaches the bore. Riders in dry, high-desert country see this happen well ahead of schedule, because ambient air keeps drawing moisture from the outer jacket even while the quad sits parked in a shed.
The bore side has a separate problem. Ethanol-blended pump gas absorbs water and gradually breaks down the inner liner, and the damage compounds on a machine that spends a long off-season with fuel in the system. The finished failure is a hose that has gone brittle and cracked on the outside while softening internally and releasing fine debris toward a fuel injector with almost no tolerance for contamination. Age alone is a fair reason to replace the line on a machine of this vintage.
Symptoms Worth Chasing Down
- A gasoline smell near the tank and seat that hangs on after shutdown, while the system still holds pressure
- A damp patch, dried stain, or slow drip on the skid plate or the floor beneath the quad
- Hairline cracks, a chalky gray finish, or a length that feels glassy and stiff under your fingers
- Caked dirt forming a ring at a clamp, which is where fuel has been weeping and drying
- Bogging under load, hesitation off idle, or a lean surge that worsens as the fuel level falls
Because escaping pressurized fuel often atomizes and evaporates before it can drip, a dry garage floor does not rule out a failing hose on an injected KingQuad. Trust the smell.
What This Machine Has Under the Plastics
The AXi designation identifies electronic fuel injection. On this platform an electric pump module drops into the top of the tank and carries the strainer and filter element with it, so the hose you can reach is a plain delivery line with nothing serviceable partway along it. There is no petcock on the machine at all, which is the defining difference from working on an older carbureted quad, and it is exactly why line-clamping pliers belong in your kit. As a 4x4, this KingQuad also routes the hose past front driveline hardware and additional frame structure, tightening access compared with a two-wheel-drive layout.
Tools, Parts, and a Genuine Safety Note
- Rubber or nitrile gloves plus eye protection
- A drain pan and a sealed container rated for gasoline
- Fuel injection rated hose in the stock inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor line
- New clamps matched to the fittings on the machine, and a release tool if the pump outlet uses a plastic quick-connect
- Line-clamping pliers to substitute for the absent petcock
- Sockets for the seat and body panels, a razor knife, a small flat blade screwdriver, and rags
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It settles across the floor rather than drifting out an open window, and floor level is precisely where a furnace pilot or shop heater draws combustion air. Work outdoors if the weather allows. Indoors, open the overhead door completely so air actually moves at ground level, shut off every flame and heating element in the building, and keep a fire extinguisher close. Disconnect the battery negative as soon as system pressure has been relieved.
Bleeding the Line and Taking It Off
Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the starter in short bursts until the engine stalls and will not catch again. That consumes the pressure the pump was holding and turns a potential spray into a manageable dribble. Key off, battery disconnected, then remove the seat and the plastics covering the tank so both fittings are exposed. Slide the pan into position and lay a rag over the first joint you open, since a bled line still holds fuel.
Move each clamp well back along the hose so it is not fighting you. Spring clamps release with a squeeze of the tabs; worm-gear clamps just loosen and slide. If the tank end uses a plastic quick-connect, depress its release tabs evenly and pull straight back without any sideways leverage, because collars that have aged for years split when levered. Where the hose has varnished onto a barb, twist a quarter turn to break the bond or slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away, which spares the throttle body spigot a hard pull. Photograph the routing and each clearance point near the front differential before the hose is fully out.
Fitting Up and Proving It Holds
Cut the replacement to the same length as the original. Extra hose is not spare capacity; it sags into the front driveline or rubs a frame edge until it chafes through. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and install it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all give pressurized fuel a channel to creep along the sealing surface, so nothing goes on those fittings. Dip a stubborn end in hot water for a few seconds instead of forcing it.
Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each spigot and snug them evenly, firm enough to seal without crushing the wall. A self-locking coupler on the tank side needs no clamp; push it until it clicks and then pull back hard to confirm the latch has caught. Reseat the hose in every factory clip so it stays clear of exhaust heat and the rotating front driveline.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without starting. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit, giving you a look at both joints before combustion is involved. Wipe them clean and watch for the smallest bead forming. Then start the engine, let it idle, blip the throttle, and inspect a final time with a fresh rag. Several minutes of dry running should pass before the bodywork goes back on. Should the quad still feel starved after a clean install, the filter and strainer inside the tank module is the remaining restriction, and getting to it means pulling the pump assembly out of the tank.
