Every fuel drop your 2011 Brute Force 650 4x4i burns passes through one unremarkable piece of rubber, and that piece has been quietly deteriorating since the machine left the crate. The good news is that renewing it takes hand tools, an hour, and a bit of care with gasoline.
A Carbureted V–Twin With a Petcock
Read the model designation carefully: the "i" here denotes independent rear suspension, not injection. This Brute Force 650 runs a carburetor, so the fuel system you are about to open is a gravity fed one with a manual petcock at the tank. Turning that valve off is the entire process of isolating the supply, and the hose ends are held with ordinary clamps rather than the self–locking quick–connect couplers you would meet on an injected machine.
The carburetor also gives you something an injected quad does not: a float bowl drain screw. That single fastener lets you empty the lowest point in the system into a pan on purpose instead of catching it in a rag by surprise. Being a four–wheel–drive chassis, the hose does share space with front differential hardware and extra frame bracing, so expect a clip or two holding it clear of that structure.
Aging Rubber and Modern Gasoline
Fuel hose fails from two directions simultaneously. Outside, the plasticizers that keep the rubber flexible migrate out over the years, and the wall grows stiff, then chalky, then prone to splitting where it bends. Heat cycling from the 633cc V–twin accelerates the loss, and a dry climate accelerates it further still, since low humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and leaves it hardened well ahead of schedule.
Inside, ethanol–blended pump gas erodes the liner. Alcohol pulls in water and works on the inner surface, and the damage compounds when fuel sits motionless in the line for months rather than flowing through it. What results is a hose that is hard on the outside and gummy within, shedding fine debris toward the carburetor long before any visible failure.
What a Tired Line Looks Like
- Fuel pooling on the skid plate or staining the floor beneath the machine
- A gasoline smell near the tank that does not fade after shutdown
- Fine cracks appearing when the hose is flexed, or a chalky gray finish
- A section that refuses to compress between your fingers
- Bogging under load, surging at steady throttle, or the feel of an empty tank when it is not
- A dust crust ringing a fitting where seeped fuel dried
Prep Work and Fume Control
Have gloves, eye protection, new hose in the matching inside diameter, clamps sized to that hose, a shallow drain pan, a sealed gasoline container, a screwdriver, pliers, the sockets for seat and bodywork, rags, and a fresh blade laid out before you start.
Then handle the air. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it drops and collects at floor level, which happens to be where your face ends up while working under the fender. Open the overhead door completely or push the machine outside, keep chargers and hot work lights out of the space, and shut off any appliance with a pilot flame in the building. Keep the gloves on throughout, since gasoline passes through skin readily and strips it dry.
Draining Before Disassembly
Turn the petcock off, remove the seat, and take away whatever plastic stands between you and the tank outlet. Slide the pan under the engine and open the float bowl drain screw so the bowl and the hose below the valve empty into it. Transfer the recovered fuel into your sealed container and carry it clear of the work area before continuing.
This is the step where a carbureted machine saves you real time. An injected quad requires pulling the pump fuse, cranking the engine until it stalls to bleed off residual pressure, and disconnecting the battery before a fitting can be safely opened. Closing one valve accomplishes the same thing here.
Coaxing the Hose Off the Barbs
Slide both clamps well back along the hose so they are not in your way. Old rubber cements itself to a fitting with dried fuel varnish, so break that bond with a gentle twisting motion rather than pulling hard. If an end has fused solidly, run the blade down its length and peel it off in strips — the hose is scrap, and prying on a fitting risks cracking the carburetor inlet or bending the petcock spigot.
Before the line is completely out, note exactly how it lies. Photograph each clip and each point where it clears the front driveline, because getting the routing right on reassembly is what keeps the new hose away from moving parts and exhaust heat.
Fresh Hose, Correct Length
Cut the replacement to the same length as the original, no longer. Extra hose is not a margin of safety; it sags into something that moves or chafes against a frame tube until it wears through. Wipe varnish and grit off both barbs, then press each hose end on until it stops against the fitting shoulder.
Fit it dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone spray on a fuel fitting, ever — lubricant prevents the clamp from sealing and gives fuel a channel to escape along. If the hose is stubborn, thirty seconds in hot water softens the end enough to slide on by hand. Set the clamps just behind the bead on each barb so they cannot walk off, snug them firm without crushing the rubber, and route the hose through every factory clip with no kinks.
Verifying the Seal
Close the float bowl drain screw, wipe both joints dry with a clean rag, and turn the petcock back on. Gravity fills the line in seconds, making this an immediate and honest test. Watch both fittings for a full minute, then run a fingertip around each one, because a slow weep is easier to feel than to see. Start the engine and let it idle to temperature, checking a third time while vibration and heat work on the fresh clamps.
When nothing shows on the rag, put the panels and seat back and ride an easy loop nearby. Shut down and inspect once more after that heat cycle. While the system is open it is also worth examining any inline filter on this carbureted 2011 Brute Force and replacing it if it looks dark or restricted, since a new hose does nothing for a plugged filter.
