Pulling and Replacing the Fuel Line on a 2011 Recon ES

The messy part of any fuel line job is getting the old hose off without emptying half the tank onto the floor. On a 2011 TRX250 Recon ES there is a simple sequence that keeps the spill down to a few drops, and it starts before you touch a clamp.
Draining Before Disconnecting
Turn the petcock to OFF first and give it a moment to stop flow. Lift the seat off and remove the left side panel to expose the tank outlet, the valve, and the hose heading down toward the carburetor. Now slide a drain pan underneath and back out the float bowl drain screw on the carburetor, letting the bowl empty through its drain tube into the pan.
That single step is what separates a clean job from a soaked one. Emptying the bowl drops the fuel level below the hose, so when you break the connections there is very little left to run out. Keep the pan positioned under the tank outlet as well, because a petcock with some age on it frequently weeps past the OFF position no matter how firmly you turn it. Line-clamping pliers pinched onto the hose give you a second layer of insurance in that situation.
What the 2011 Recon ES Uses
This model is carbureted. The 229cc air-cooled single is fed through a carburetor, and the ES electric shift system controls gear selection rather than anything fuel related. No pump pressurizes the line, so there is no relay to pull and no pressure to bleed off before starting — a step that injected quads absolutely require. The petcock supplies ON, OFF, and reserve positions, plain clamps hold both hose ends instead of self-locking quick-connect couplers, and the float bowl drain screw is fully serviceable.
The Recon ES is 2WD with a solid rear axle. Nothing like a front differential occupies the room beneath the tank, so the hose run is short and remains visible while you work, rather than disappearing around driveline hardware the way it can on a four-wheel-drive machine.
Freeing the Hardened Ends
Push both clamps well back along the hose before you disturb either fitting. On a machine from 2011 the original spring clips may have relaxed, so replace them as a matter of course. Grip the hose close to the barb and twist it to break the varnish bond that has formed over the years, then work it off with steady pressure rather than a hard yank.
Some ends simply will not release. When that happens, slice the hose lengthwise with a razor knife and peel it off the fitting in strips. This is always the right answer over prying with a screwdriver, since both the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet grow brittle and cost far more to replace than the hose itself. As the old line comes away, note every clip it passed through and how it cleared the exhaust header and the shift linkage.
Why the Old Hose Failed
Rubber loses this fight on two fronts. Heat cycling off the air-cooled cylinder drives plasticizers out of the compound, and after enough seasons the hose feels stiff, looks glazed, and cracks at its tightest bend. Light sneaking past the plastics adds to it, and dry-climate machines harden fastest because low humidity keeps drawing moisture from the hose wall.
Ethanol-blended fuel handles the interior. E10 absorbs water, and any long stretch of the Recon ES sitting with gas in the line lets that mixture soften the liner and leave varnish behind. The combination produces hose that is brittle outside and swollen inside, which is why age alone is reason enough to replace it.
Symptoms That Preceded This

- A gasoline odor around the machine hours after shutdown
- A damp ring or drip trail under the left side of the engine
- Cracking, a chalky texture, or hose that stays rigid when squeezed
- Dust caked at a clamp where fuel seeped and evaporated
- Bogging under load, a lean stumble, or behavior like an empty tank with fuel still aboard
The gravity-feed layout is why that last symptom shows up. A hose narrowed internally still supplies idle while starving the carburetor at sustained throttle.
Installation and the Final Leak Check
Cut the new hose to match the removed piece exactly, then push each end on dry until it bottoms against the fitting shoulder. Use no grease, oil, or silicone on the barbs — lubricant on a sealing surface creates a leak path and lets the hose creep off under vibration. Thirty seconds in hot water softens a tight end enough to seat it fully. Set each clamp just behind the raised bead, tighten evenly without deforming the rubber, and guide the hose back through its original clips so it keeps clear of exhaust heat.
Close the float bowl drain screw, turn the petcock to ON, and watch both connections for a full minute as fuel refills the bowl. Wipe the area completely dry with a clean rag so fresh seepage stands out against clean metal, then start the engine and inspect again at idle with vibration in play. Finish with a short ride and a third look while everything is warm. With the panel off, give the tank vent hose a squeeze as well, since it ages the same way and a blocked vent produces starvation symptoms that will have you doubting a good repair.
