On a 2011 Rancher 420 4x4 ES the entire circuit between the tank and the carburetor is short, visible, and unpressurized, which means an owner with basic hand skills can handle it start to finish without specialty equipment.

Verifying Your Fuel Delivery Setup

Your 2011 Rancher runs a carburetor, and that determines the shape of the whole job. Fuel drops by gravity from the tank through a manual fuel valve, travels a short rubber hose, and enters the carburetor inlet. The valve is a real shutoff, the hose carries no pump pressure, both ends are simple barbs held by spring or wire clamps, and the carburetor has a float bowl drain screw so you can empty the bowl into a container in a controlled way.

The injected Ranchers built later on this platform diverge at every step. They have no petcock, so you either pinch the line with clamping pliers or shut down and bleed the pump circuit before opening anything. Their fuel filter lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly rather than sitting inline on the visible hose, and the tank end commonly uses a snap lock quick connect that takes no clamp. Confirming you have the carbureted version up front means you buy the right parts once.

How a Hose Reaches the End of Its Life

Rubber fuel line relies on plasticizers to stay flexible, and heat cycling off the 420 single steadily bakes them out. The hose stiffens, loses the ability to conform around its barb, and begins weeping at the joint even when the surface shows no split at all. Arid climates make this happen sooner because low ambient humidity keeps drawing moisture out of the hose wall, hardening the jacket from the outside in.

Ethanol blended gasoline handles the other half of the destruction. Alcohol pulls water in and attacks the inner liner, swelling and softening it while laying down gum and varnish, and it does the most damage during periods when the machine sits unused with fuel in the system. Two opposing failure modes, one hose, and an outward appearance that often gives away nothing.

Checklist for Spotting a Failing Line

  • Engine bogging on climbs, stumbling off idle, or surging as though it is running out of gas

The performance symptoms matter as much as the visual ones. When a line restricts, collapses internally, or admits air past a fatigued clamp, the carburetor cannot get the volume it is calling for and the mixture leans out. That is worth fixing promptly rather than riding around while chasing jetting.

Assembling Tools and Making the Space Safe

Put together nitrile or rubber gloves, replacement hose in the correct inside diameter, fresh clamps, an approved container and funnel for drained fuel, needle nose pliers, a hose pick, a sharp razor, a flat blade screwdriver for the bowl drain, sockets for the seat and the tank plastics, and a generous supply of rags.

Then deal with ventilation honestly. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles right at floor level where you will be working, so a window six feet up does nothing useful. Push the machine outside or open the door completely. Disconnect the battery negative terminal, keep grinders, heaters, and any open flame well away, and keep the drain container capped between pours.

Getting the Old Hose Out of the Chassis

Close the petcock first. Remove the seat and the plastic panels over the tank so the valve, the hose run, and the carburetor inlet are all in plain view at once. Slide the container beneath the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty through its drain tube. Place a rag under the first fitting you open regardless, since the hose still holds fuel with the valve shut.

Work each clamp back along the hose before you disturb the joint. Rotate the hose on its barb to break the varnish grip rather than pulling straight off, and if an end refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away. That protects the carburetor inlet and the petcock spigot, both of which cost real money. On this 4x4 the line passes around the front driveline and additional frame structure, with electric shift wiring in the neighborhood, so note every clip and guide before the hose is completely free.

Seating the Replacement and Testing for Leaks

Trim the new hose to the same length as the old one. Excess length chafes on the frame or fouls the steering; too little pulls at both fittings every time the chassis flexes. Push each end onto its barb dry until it bottoms against the shoulder. Do not use grease, oil, or silicone spray to help it slide, because lubricant on a sealing surface is the most common source of a leak that turns up a week after the repair. Hot water for a few seconds is the acceptable shortcut.

Install the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug without crushing the rubber. Route the line through its original guides so it stays clear of exhaust heat and the front driveshaft with no kinks. Close the bowl drain, turn the petcock on, and simply watch both joints for two minutes before starting anything. Wipe each fitting with a dry rag and check the rag for dampness. Then run the engine, let it warm at idle, and inspect once more while it vibrates. Put the plastics and seat back on only after the repair proves dry, and take another look after your first ride.
