This model runs programmed fuel injection, so the hose between the tank and the throttle body is under pressure whenever the pump has run, and there is no petcock to close by hand. Isolating fuel here is an electrical exercise, and getting that order right is what keeps the job clean.

Isolating Fuel on a Machine With No Petcock

Carbureted quads made this easy. A hand valve under the tank stopped gravity feed, the hose downstream saw almost no pressure, and you could open a float bowl drain to empty what remained. The stall confirms the pressure is gone. The disconnected battery guarantees the pump cannot energize while your hands are in the fuel path. What Sends a Hose to the Scrap Pile

Fuel hose fails chemically. The additives that make rubber flexible slowly leave the wall under repeated heat cycling, and the hose goes from pliable to rigid over a period of years. Once that stiffness sets in, the everyday flexing of a working chassis starts opening surface cracks that spread inward. Riders in dry, arid country tend to see this arrive early, because there is little humidity to keep the outer wall from drying.

Working the other side of the wall, ethanol-blended gasoline holds water in suspension and gradually attacks the liner. Fuel that stands in the hose while the quad waits between jobs leaves gum and varnish deposits, and the hose can be softening internally at the same time it hardens externally. That is why a machine now more than a decade old is a candidate for fresh hose whether or not the outside looks bad.

Symptoms Worth Investigating Today

  • Fuel smell hanging around the tank and seat, at its strongest just after shutdown
  • A wet spot, drip trail, or puddle under the right side of the engine
  • Surface cracking, a hardened section, or a chalky feel when you pinch the hose
  • A dust ring baked onto a fitting where fuel has been seeping and evaporating
  • Bogging on a climb, stumbling as the throttle opens, or the engine acting starved with fuel aboard

Do not dismiss a smell just because you cannot find a drop. Pressurized fuel escaping a small breach frequently mists and evaporates before it reaches the floor, so an injected quad will hide leaks that a carbureted one would have advertised with a steady drip.

Tools, Materials, and Ventilation

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • Injection-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
  • A sealed metal or fuel-rated container plus a funnel
  • Correct-style clamps, and a quick-connect release tool if your fitting uses a locking collar
  • Line-clamping pliers, a razor knife, and hand tools for the seat and panels
  • More rags than you think you need

The gasoline safety point is straightforward and worth taking seriously. Vapor from an open fuel line is heavier than air and settles at floor level, which is exactly where pilot lights, chargers, and dropped shop lights are. Work outdoors when possible. In a garage, open the door completely, remove anything that can spark or flame, and keep your catch container closed except when you are pouring.

Removing and Replacing the Hose

With the system depressurized and the battery disconnected, pull the seat and whatever panel blocks the tank outlet. Slide a catch pan under the joint and lay a rag across it before you open anything. Walk clamps back along the hose instead of wrestling them where they sit, and release quick-connects by depressing both tabs squarely and pulling straight, since twelve-year-old plastic collars snap if you lever them sideways. Where varnish has glued the hose to its barb, a gentle twist usually frees it, and if not, slit the hose along its length and peel it off. Because this is a 4x4 with power steering, the hose passes nearer the front driveline and steering hardware than it would on a two-wheel-drive Rancher, adding a clearance point or two to remember.

Cut the replacement to the length of the piece you removed and push each end fully home on its barb, dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray have no place on a fuel fitting, because lubricant left on a sealing surface hands pressurized gasoline a path out from under the clamp. Hot water softens a reluctant hose end better than anything from a spray can. Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly to snug. If the tank side uses a self-locking quick-connect, push until it clicks and confirm with a firm pull; no clamp belongs there. Thread the hose back through its factory guides and check clearance to the exhaust and the front driveshaft area.

The Leak Check That Ends the Job

Put the fuse back, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking. Every cycle runs the pump briefly and loads the line, which is the ideal condition for finding a joint that has not sealed. Inspect both fittings with a light, wipe them clean, and inspect again for fresh dampness. Start the engine, look once more at idle, blip the throttle, and check a final time. Let it run several minutes before the bodywork returns.

Worth remembering as you close up: on this injected Rancher the fuel filter is part of the in-tank pump assembly, not an inline element on the hose you just replaced. A fresh line fixes leaks and collapsed sections, but a restricted filter produces identical lean symptoms. If the quad still bogs after a dry, correctly clamped installation, that module is the logical next stop.
