Take the seat off a 2011 Rancher 420 2x4 ES and squeeze the fuel hose between your fingers. If it feels like plastic tubing instead of rubber, you already have your answer. This generation of Rancher is carbureted and gravity fed, with a manual valve on the tank and a short hose running to the carburetor, which makes the replacement one of the more approachable jobs on the machine.

Cracks, Stiffness, and Weeping Fittings

The hose gives you several kinds of evidence. Visually, look for fine surface crazing at the bends, a chalky finish where the rubber used to be glossy, and a dark ring of packed dirt at either fitting, which forms where fuel has seeped and dried over and over. By feel, a serviceable hose compresses easily and springs back, while a finished one stays rigid and sometimes crackles faintly.

Then there is the fuel itself. Because this system runs on gravity rather than pressure, a leak drips instead of atomizing away as it often does on the injected Ranchers that replaced this generation. That means a wet patch or dried stain beneath the machine after it has sat with the valve open is a reliable finding, as is a strong gasoline smell around the tank and carburetor. Running symptoms round it out: bogging on climbs, surging at steady throttle, and an engine acting starved with fuel still in the tank.

Ethanol and Long Idle Periods

Fuel hose loses flexibility as the softening agents in the rubber migrate out under engine heat. What remains is a stiffer, thinner wall that cracks at every bend where vibration concentrates. In dry, low-humidity country the process runs faster, because arid air draws moisture out of the hose wall from the outside in.

Ethanol-blended gasoline standing in the line for months adds damage from the inside. It absorbs water and slowly degrades the inner liner, leaving a soft interior surface that sheds fine material and encourages gum, which on a carbureted machine can end up plugging a jet. Because that deterioration is hidden, hose age tells you more about condition than a quick look ever will.

Supplies for a Clean Job

Get all of this together first:

  • Fuel-rated replacement hose in the original inside diameter
  • New spring clips or worm-gear clamps in the right size
  • Gloves, eye protection, and a stack of clean rags
  • An approved fuel container and a drain pan
  • A screwdriver for the float bowl drain screw and a short hose to direct that drain
  • Hand tools for the seat and fender fasteners, plus a razor knife

Gasoline deserves genuine respect here. Its vapor is heavier than air, so it settles at floor level and spreads toward pilot lights, chargers, and anything else that can spark down low. Work outdoors or with the door wide open, keep an extinguisher close, wear gloves rather than washing fuel off your hands repeatedly, and set used rags outside when you are finished.

Turning the Fuel Valve Off

Rotate the valve to the off position and let the engine idle until it stalls. That empties most of what sits downstream and is a convenience the later injected models do not offer, since a machine with an in-tank pump and no valve requires line-clamping pliers to stop flow. Once the engine is dead, remove the seat and the panel or fender section covering the tank and carburetor.

Fit your short hose to the float bowl drain, route it into the container, and loosen the drain screw so the carburetor empties cleanly instead of dumping onto the engine cases. Retighten the screw when the flow stops. This step keeps the workspace dry and removes any fuel that would otherwise run back out of the carburetor when you pull the line.

Working the Old Hose Free

Slide both clamps well back along the hose before you disturb either joint. Spring clips open with a squeeze of the pliers; worm-gear clamps loosen with a screwdriver. Twist the hose gently on each barb to break the varnish bond rather than pulling straight against it, and if an end has bonded solid, slice it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away so the fitting is not stressed. The carburetor nipple in particular can be damaged by prying.

Pay attention to the routing as the hose comes out. The two-wheel-drive chassis leaves the area comparatively open, with no front differential or extra driveline hardware to navigate the way a 4x4 layout adds, but the line still needs to clear the exhaust and stay away from the electric shift wiring and connectors near the engine. A quick photo before removal saves guessing later.

Seating and Securing the New Hose

Cut the replacement to the same length as the piece you removed. Too long and it rubs a frame rail or drifts toward the header; too short and it tugs at both fittings as the chassis works. Push each end fully onto its barb until it stops against the shoulder, and assemble everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone break the seal between rubber and metal and give fuel a path past the clamp, so soften a stubborn hose end in hot water instead of lubricating it.

Position the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly. Firm is right; crushed is not, since an overtightened clamp cuts into the hose wall and creates the leak you were trying to prevent. Return the hose to its factory clips before moving on.

Leak Test Before You Load Up

Turn the fuel valve on and let gravity fill the line and float bowl while you watch both connections. Give it a full minute, then wipe each fitting with a clean rag and study the cloth for a damp streak. Start the engine, let it idle for several minutes, and check both joints once more as the hose warms and settles into its final shape.

Finish by verifying that the fuel valve shuts off completely and glancing at the screen behind it, because new hose does nothing about a restriction upstream. With both fittings dry, the hose fully seated, and the clamps set correctly, this Rancher is ready for another season of hauling.
