Can-Am's 90cc sport model relies on gravity for fuel delivery, which means the hose is the entire system between tank and engine. Replacing it costs almost nothing and takes an afternoon with basic hand tools.
Removing the Old Hose
Start by turning the petcock to OFF and letting the fuel in the line settle. On a carbureted quad like this one, that valve is the complete shutoff — there is no pump to disable and no residual pressure to bleed, which is what makes a gravity-fed machine friendlier to work on than a fuel-injected one. Slide your drain container under the carburetor anyway, since a petcock with years on it can weep past the seat. Open the float bowl drain screw and let the bowl empty into the container.
Move to the carburetor inlet and push the clamp back along the hose so it is out of the way. Rather than pulling the hose straight off, twist it a quarter turn first to break the bond that has formed between rubber and barb. Old hose tears when yanked, and the leftover ring welded to the fitting then has to come off with a fingernail or plastic pick — a screwdriver scores the barb and guarantees a future leak. Free the petcock end the same way. Study the routing before the hose is out of the machine so the new one follows the same path. With two-wheel drive and chain final drive, the DS90X has no front differential crowding the run, but the hose still needs to clear the steering stem through its whole sweep.
Why Fuel Line Fails in the First Place
Rubber breaks down from the fuel side outward. Gasoline in constant contact with the inner wall extracts the plasticizers that keep the material flexible, and the hose gradually hardens until it no longer conforms to the barb it is clamped over. Heat compounds the problem, and the end nearest the cylinder on an air-cooled 90 sits in the warmest air on the quad. In dry regions the outside of the jacket dries and crazes at the same time, so the hose is being attacked from both directions.
Stale fuel does the rest. Machines in this class are ridden hard for a weekend and then parked, sometimes for a full season, and ethanol-blended gas left standing in a warm line oxidizes and separates. It leaves varnish behind that gums the inner wall and can swell softer rubber compounds. Two winters of sitting with fuel in the line ages a hose more than a summer of riding does.

- Damp patches or drips beneath the petcock or carburetor
- Cracks that appear when the hose is gently flexed
- Hose that feels stiff and glassy instead of soft
- Varnish, discoloration, or stickiness at either clamp
- An engine that starts strong and then bogs or runs lean once it has been working
The running symptom is the one most often misdiagnosed. A line that has swollen closed internally, or a clamp letting air in, cannot keep up with the float bowl and produces a stumble identical to a jetting issue. Check the hose before opening the carburetor on a DS90X.
What to Have on Hand
- Gasoline-rated hose sized correctly for this machine, cut slightly long
- Two new clamps — small worm-gear or a matched pinch-clamp kit
- Nitrile gloves and safety glasses
- A metal or fuel-safe drain container
- Flat screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, hose cutter or sharp knife
- Rags and soapy water in a spray bottle
Treat the gasoline seriously even though the quantities are small. Vapor is heavier than air and collects at floor level, right where a water heater pilot or shop heater sits, so work outdoors or with the door fully open and keep flames away entirely. Let the engine cool before opening the fuel path, and leave gloves on throughout — gasoline absorbs through skin quickly.
Installing the Replacement
Thread both clamps onto the new hose before either end goes anywhere near a fitting. Dropping the ends in hot water for thirty seconds makes them supple enough to push onto the barbs without a fight. Seat each end completely against the shoulder of its barb, then position the clamps behind the barb ridge where they clamp against something solid instead of bare hose. Tighten them firmly but stop before the clamp bites into the rubber. Never apply grease or lubricant to a fuel fitting; it contaminates fuel and allows the hose to migrate off the barb once heat softens it. Trim the line so it lies in a natural curve with no kinks and no strain pulling at either connection.
Leak Check and Final Details
Open the petcock and watch both joints closely for two full minutes. Wipe them dry and check a second time for anything fresh. Mist soapy water on the connections, start the engine, and look for bubbles forming at a barb. Shut down while the engine is warm and inspect once more, because a marginal seal often only shows itself at temperature. Turn the bars lock to lock to confirm the hose neither stretches nor pinches. With both joints dry, the 2011 DS90X is ready for the next ride.
