The 2010 Wolverine 450 closed out a model line that never gave up its manual clutch or its carburetor, and that mechanical honesty pays off when it comes time for fuel work. The hose between the tank and the carburetor is a low-cost wear item, and swapping it requires nothing more exotic than a screwdriver, a pair of clamps, and a place to put the fuel.
Following the Fuel Path
Gasoline leaves the tank through a manual petcock offering ON, RESERVE, and OFF. From there it drops through a short rubber hose, held by a clamp at each end, into the inlet on the Mikuni carburetor. Gravity supplies the entire motive force; nothing pumps and nothing pressurizes. At the base of the carburetor a float bowl drain screw lets you empty the bowl deliberately into a container instead of onto the concrete.
If your recent fuel experience is with injected machines, note what is absent. There is no pump fuse to pull, no residual pressure to bleed by cranking, no self-locking quick-connect coupler needing a release tool, and no filter buried inside the tank. Closing the petcock is the entire shutoff procedure on this Wolverine.

Both hose ends live under bodywork, so plan on removing the seat and the plastic panel covering the tank to get proper eyes and hands on the run. Before anything comes apart, note the clips and guides the hose passes through, because reproducing the original path is what keeps the new hose from chafing or drooping toward heat.
The 450 is a selectable four-wheel-drive machine, and the front differential with its driveshaft occupies real space beneath the engine. The fuel hose stays short and high between tank and carburetor, so 4WD does not change the route, but there is less elbow room and an extra frame member or two to reach past than on a two-wheel-drive utility quad. This engine is liquid cooled as well, meaning coolant hoses and a radiator share the neighborhood. Confirm you have the fuel hose in hand before you cut anything.
Why Rubber Fuel Hose Wears Out
New hose is soft because of plasticizing compounds worked into the rubber, and those compounds slowly leach out of the wall over years of service. What remains is hard and brittle, and a hose that cannot flex begins developing hairline cracks under normal engine vibration and chassis movement. Each heat cycle drives them a bit deeper until one penetrates. Machines in dry, arid regions get there faster, since low humidity pulls moisture out of the rubber.
Meanwhile, ethanol-blended pump gas degrades the inner liner. Alcohol attracts water and attacks the liner over time, and fuel left standing through a long off-season leaves varnish and gum deposits inside the hose. That combination is why replacing hose on age rather than appearance is the right call — the exterior can look perfectly acceptable while the interior is already shedding material toward your jets.
Recognizing a Line That Needs Replacing
- Gasoline pooling on the skid plate or the floor after the machine has been parked
- A fuel smell that lingers in a closed garage well past engine heat
- Cracking, crazing, or a chalky appearance on the hose surface
- Hardness under a firm pinch, worst in the sections that sit under clamps
- Dried residue rings at either fitting where fuel has seeped and evaporated
- Bogging under load, hesitation off idle, or lean surging at steady throttle
A dry floor proves nothing on its own. When the liner breaks down, a hose can restrict flow or feed debris into the carburetor inlet, causing textbook starvation while the exterior stays dry. An engine that acts nearly empty on a half tank is a delivery problem first and a jetting question second.
Supplies and Genuine Safety Prep
Have ready: fuel-rated replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter, two new clamps plus a spare, nitrile gloves, eye protection, an approved fuel container, a shallow drain pan, a flat-blade screwdriver, small pliers, sockets for the seat and panels, a sharp utility knife, and clean rags.
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and collects at floor level right where you will be kneeling. Open the door completely or push the machine outdoors instead of trusting a window above head height. Extinguish pilot lights, unplug thermostatically controlled shop heaters, and keep sparks and open flame out of the space. Disconnect the battery negative cable before you break a fitting so no circuit can arc, let the engine and exhaust cool fully, and keep a fire extinguisher within reach.
Removal and Installation
With the petcock at OFF and the bodywork off, slide the pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, drain the bowl into your container, and retighten the screw. Move each clamp back along the hose and clear of its barb. Rotate the hose a quarter turn at each fitting to break the varnish bond, then pull it straight off — never lever sideways with a screwdriver, since the petcock spigot cracks far more easily than a hardened hose lets go. If an end has bonded solid, slit the last inch lengthwise and peel the rubber away. Keep drips clear of the front drive components as you extract the old piece.
Cut the new hose to match the original exactly, then push each end fully onto its barb past the raised bead, working it on completely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no place on a fuel connection; anything slick on the sealing surface creates a leak path and can carry contamination into the carburetor. Thirty seconds in hot water softens a stubborn end enough to slide right on. Set the clamps just behind the bead at each fitting, tighten evenly to firm without crushing, and route the hose through its original guides in a smooth arc clear of the cylinder, exhaust, radiator, and 4WD hardware.
Checking the Work and Wrapping Up
Open the petcock and let gravity fill the line and bowl. Inspect both fittings for a full minute, wipe them dry with a clean rag, and look again, because a dry surface makes a slow weep visible in a way that a wet one never will. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check once more at idle with the panels still off.
Before you finish, replace any inline filter fitted between the petcock and the carburetor. Sediment and varnish build up in that element, and a plugged filter causes the same lean, bogging behavior as a failing hose while a new line does nothing to clear it. With fresh hose, new clamps, and a clean filter, the fuel system on your 450 is squared away for years.
