How to Change the Fuel Hose on a 2010 Grizzly 550 4x4 Power Steering

Ask a 2010 Grizzly 550 4x4 Power Steering owner where the petcock is and the honest answer is that there is not one. This generation of Grizzly 550 came with electronic fuel injection, an in-tank electric pump, and a supply hose that stays pressurized after the key comes out. Everything about how you approach a hose replacement follows from that.

What Your Quad Tells You First

The earliest complaint is usually your nose. Raw gasoline hanging in the air around the machine, particularly in the minutes right after shutdown, means fuel is escaping somewhere it should not. Look next for a stain on the skid plate, a damp patch that has collected dust into a dark ring at a fitting, or an outright puddle after the Grizzly has sat overnight on clean ground.

Then there is how it runs. Hesitation when you snap the throttle, a soft spot in the midrange, or the sensation that you are low on fuel with a half-full tank all point toward delivery problems, and a cracked or loose hose can absolutely produce them. Pinch the hose in several places by hand. Any section that feels rigid, chalky, or that crackles when squeezed has lost the flexibility it needs to seal against a barb.

When Rubber Stops Being Rubber

Two things kill fuel hose. Heat from the engine, cycle after cycle, drives out the plasticizers that keep the wall soft, and the hose gradually shrinks and stiffens. Arid conditions compound it, because dry air pulls moisture from the material and speeds the transition from flexible to glassy. A hose kept in dry country often shows fine checking years earlier than one in a humid climate.

The fuel attacks from the inside. Ethanol blends draw water into the system and slowly degrade the inner liner, softening it as the outside hardens. Fuel that sits in the line for months evaporates and leaves varnish behind, which bonds hose to fitting and can hide a slow seep under a layer of dried gum. Neither process is visible from a quick glance, which is why age alone justifies replacement on a machine this old.

Prep Work and Gasoline Sense

  • Nitrile gloves, eye protection, and a shop apron or old clothes you do not mind soaking
  • A wide drain pan and an approved, sealable container for the fuel you catch
  • Hose rated for fuel injection pressure, in the original inside diameter
  • Fresh clamps matched to what is on the machine, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank end has a locking coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers, which do the job the missing fuel valve would have done
  • Hand tools for the seat, side panels, and tank fasteners, and a stack of clean rags

Genuine safety note: gasoline vapor is heavier than air and sinks, so it collects around your ankles and under the machine where you cannot see or smell it well. Roll the quad outside or open the bay fully and set a fan on the floor to sweep vapor out. No open flame, no grinding, no hot incandescent work light, and keep an extinguisher within reach the entire time.

Getting the Old Hose Off the Barbs

Relieve pressure before anything else. Pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine until it dies on its own, turn the key off, then disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and enough plastic to see the full hose run rather than reaching in blind.

Slide the pan underneath, lay a rag over the joint, and expect fuel even from a depressurized line. Walk each clamp back down the hose before you disturb the fitting. Quick-connect couplers want both tabs squeezed evenly and a straight pull — prying sideways cracks collars that have grown brittle. When the hose has varnished onto a barb, slice it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away rather than twisting hard enough to bend or break the fitting.

Note every clip and clearance point as you go. This is a 4x4 with power steering hardware and a front differential filling the space ahead of the engine, so the factory hose path deliberately dodges obstacles a two-wheel-drive machine would not have. Snapshots now save guesswork later.

Making the New Connection Hold

Cut the replacement to the same length as the original. Extra hose sags into the header or wears against a frame edge, and a short piece pulls at its fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, and do it completely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray on a fuel fitting are the classic cause of a slow weep that no amount of clamp torque will fix. Dip the hose end in hot water if it fights you.

Position the new clamps just behind the raised bead at each fitting and tighten evenly — firm, not crushing. A self-locking quick-connect gets pressed until it clicks and then pulled firmly to confirm it latched, with no clamp added. Return the hose to every original guide so it stays clear of exhaust heat and moving driveline components.

The Final Walkaround

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without starting. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the hose, giving you a static leak test on clean, dry rubber where even a trace of dampness stands out. Inspect both joints between cycles.

Once the static check is clean, start the Grizzly and let it idle for several minutes. Look at both connections with a fresh rag, and pay attention to the air around the tank as well as what you see. Reassemble the plastics only after the machine has run leak-free. Worth remembering afterward: this model filters fuel inside the tank as part of the pump assembly, so a still-hesitant engine after a good hose install points at that in-tank unit rather than the line you just replaced.
