Because this model is carbureted rather than fuel injected, that hose is unpressurized and gravity fed, and a hand-operated fuel valve on the tank gives you a clean way to stop flow before you touch either end. Understanding that layout up front is what turns this from an intimidating fuel-system job into a straightforward afternoon task.

How Age Undoes a Fuel Hose

Fuel line hardens rather than wears. The compounds that keep the rubber supple leave the material year after year, and once enough of them are gone the wall stops flexing and starts fracturing at the bends near the valve spigot and the carburetor inlet. Engine heat cycles push that process forward, and dry, low-humidity air accelerates it by pulling moisture out of the rubber from the outside surface inward.

Meanwhile the fuel itself is working on the liner. Ethanol blends break down the inside of the hose and attract water into the system, and fuel that sits unused for a season leaves gum and varnish that can partially choke the passage. That is the trap on a machine of this age: the hose can hard-crack on the outside and shed material on the inside at the same time, which is why replacement is worth doing on time in service rather than on looks.

Signs Worth a Second Look

  • Wet staining or a small puddle under the frame after parking with the valve open
  • A gasoline smell that will not clear from an enclosed garage
  • Cracks along the hose surface or a hardened, inflexible section under your fingers
  • Bogging on hills, lean surging, or the engine behaving as though the tank is empty
  • A grit-caked damp ring at either fitting

With gravity feed, head pressure from a full tank exposes weeping joints that stay dry on a low tank. Test the machine full, on level ground, with the valve open.

Gathering Gear and Working Safely

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • A sealed fuel-rated container and a shallow pan for drips
  • Gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
  • Replacement spring clips or small worm-gear clamps
  • Line-clamping pliers to pinch off flow while a fitting is open
  • Flat screwdriver, sockets, sharp razor, and clean rags

Take the vapor seriously. Gasoline fumes are heavier than air, pool along the floor, and reach exactly the height where water heater pilots and battery chargers sit. Work in open air or with the overhead door raised, kill every ignition source in the space, keep an extinguisher at your side, and lid the drain container the moment you are done pouring.

Detaching the Original Line

Close the fuel valve first, then open the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty through the overflow tube into your pan. Take the seat off along with whatever bodywork blocks the tank outlet and carburetor inlet, and photograph the hose path including every clip before anything is disturbed.

Slide the clamps back along the hose so they are out of the way. Break the varnish bond at each barb with a gentle twist, then pull the hose straight off. When one refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of levering, because both the valve spigot and the carburetor inlet bend more easily than they look. Being a 4x4, this Grizzly routes its line past front differential hardware and additional frame crossmembers, so record those clearance points as the old hose comes free.

New Hose In, System Verified

Cut the replacement to the original length exactly. A long line sags against the frame, rubs a crossmember, or wanders toward exhaust heat. Seat each end fully onto its barb and do it dry — grease, oil, and silicone on a sealing surface hand fuel a path around the clamp that tightening will never close. A quick dip in hot water softens a tight end enough to slide on.

Set clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting, tighten evenly without biting into the rubber, and return the hose to its factory clips clear of the steering and front drive. If the inline filter is dark or holding sediment, change it now with the flow arrow toward the carburetor.

Open the valve and let it stand several minutes with a full tank, then wipe both joints with a clean pale rag and look for amber staining rather than a drip. Once the static check reads dry, fire the engine and inspect at idle while heat and vibration do their work. Take a short shakedown ride, shut down, and check one last time before reinstalling the plastics. If a lean stumble outlives the new hose and a clean filter, the float level and jetting inside the carburetor are your next stop.
