Putting a New Fuel Line on a 2010 Grizzly 350 4x4

For the price of a couple of gallons of fuel, a new hose between the tank and the carburetor buys back the confidence to load a 2010 Grizzly 350 4x4 in the truck and not think about it again. This is genuinely one of the highest-value maintenance items on an aging utility quad, and it asks for nothing more exotic than a screwdriver, a drain pan, and an hour of attention.

Gravity Feed and a Mechanical Shutoff

Know your fuel system before anything else. This Grizzly is carbureted: a manual valve mounts at the tank with ON, OFF, and reserve positions, one rubber line carries fuel down to the carburetor inlet under gravity, and the float bowl underneath has a drain screw threaded into it. Nothing in that path is pressurized. A fuel-injected utility quad would have you pulling a pump fuse, cranking to bleed off residual pressure, and perhaps releasing a self-locking quick-connect collar before any hose came loose. Here you close a lever, drain the bowl, and the line is safe to open.

Four-wheel drive changes the geography a little. The front differential and drive shaft occupy real estate beneath the frame, so the hose path runs slightly longer than on a 2x4 and passes an extra clip or clearance point. It is the same procedure, just with a bit more routing to keep track of.

How Fuel Hose Wears Out

The compound in a fuel line depends on plasticizers to stay pliable, and engine heat drives them off a little more with every ride. Eventually the hose acts like rigid tubing, and instead of flexing with the chassis it cracks — usually at the tight radius right below the fuel valve. Riders in dry regions see it sooner, because arid air steadily wicks moisture out of the hose wall and stiffens it ahead of schedule.

Ethanol content in modern gasoline handles the inner surface. Alcohol attracts water and degrades the liner, softening it and shedding fine material downstream toward the jets. If the machine has sat for a season with fuel standing in the line, evaporation leaves gum and varnish behind that narrows the bore and cements the rubber onto the barbs. Brittle outside, gummy inside, restricted in the middle: that is the normal end state, not a defect.

Field Signs of a Failing Line

Any of these is reason enough to replace the hose:

  • A puddle or wet spot beneath the machine hours after shutdown
  • A gasoline odor around the tank that stays put even with the valve closed
  • Surface crazing, real cracks, or a dry chalky look on the hose
  • A stiff, glassy feel when you squeeze the line, or soft swelling at the fittings
  • Bogging under throttle, hesitation on hills, or lean surging that mimics low fuel

Trust your nose even without a visible drip. A pinhole on the upper surface of the hose can release enough vapor to smell while the fuel evaporates before it ever reaches the floor, and that crack only grows with each ride.

Gear Up and Ventilate

What to have ready:

  • Fuel-rated replacement hose in the stock inside diameter
  • Fresh clamps or clips sized to the barbs
  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • An approved sealed container for drained fuel and a low drip pan
  • Hand tools for the seat and bodywork, a clamp driver, a razor knife, and rags
  • A flashlight or headlamp for tracing the hose under the frame

Take the gasoline seriously. Vapor is heavier than air, sinks toward the floor, and gathers around water heater pilots, battery chargers, and low outlets. Roll the quad outdoors if you can, and if not, open the overhead door completely and shut down anything that sparks or cycles on its own. Pour drained fuel straight into a sealed can, never down a drain, and keep an extinguisher close.

Peeling Off the Original Line

Close the fuel valve. Remove the seat and any panel in the way, slide the pan beneath the carburetor, and open the float bowl drain screw so the bowl empties through its overflow tube. Close the screw. What remains in the hose is minimal.

Retract the clamp at the carburetor inlet up the hose and out of the way. Rotate the hose gently to break the varnish grip on the barb, then ease it off with even pressure. Hardened rubber comes off best when you slit it lengthwise with the knife and peel it away, which avoids prying against the inlet fitting. Do the same at the valve end, working the hose free of each clip and past the front driveline clearance points rather than dragging it out. Take a look at the valve screen for accumulated sediment while it is visible — that screen is the serviceable filter on a carbureted Grizzly, in contrast to an injected model where the filter sits inside the tank with the pump.

Fresh Hose, Correct Routing

Match the new hose to the old length and cut square. Do not add slack for good measure; on a 4x4 chassis a long line can drift toward the front drive shaft or the exhaust, and a raised loop can trap an air pocket in a gravity system. Slide each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and assemble everything dry. Keep grease, oil, and silicone entirely off the fittings, since anything slick compromises the seal and lets vibration push the hose off the barb. A quick dip of the hose end in hot water solves stubborn new rubber.

Seat the clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten evenly. Return the hose to the original clips with a continuous downhill run, verify it clears the front differential hardware and hot surfaces, and tug both ends to be certain they are captured.

Last Look Before It Goes Back Together

Open the valve and give it a full minute with a clean, dry rag under each connection, watching for the faintest color change. Start the Grizzly, let it idle while the bowl refills and the engine warms, then inspect both joints and the ground beneath the machine. Blip the throttle a handful of times and check once more with your light, especially where the line passes the front driveline. Only after a confirmed dry install should the bodywork go back on. Clean up, dispose of the old hose and fuel responsibly, and your 350 4x4 is squared away.
