The first hint of fuel line trouble on a 2010 KingQuad 750AXi Power Steering is almost never a puddle. It is a smell in the shed, or a hesitation on a climb that was not there last season. Learning to interpret those early signals gives you the chance to replace the hose on your schedule instead of on the trail.
Early Warning Signs Worth Trusting
- Gasoline odor near the seat and tank, most noticeable in the first few minutes after you shut the engine down
- A wet spot or shallow pool beneath the frame after the machine has sat overnight
- Fine surface crazing, a chalky gray bloom, or a section of hose that stays hard when you squeeze it firmly
- Bogging under load, a stumble when the throttle snaps open, or the engine acting starved with plenty of fuel showing
- Dirt stuck in a damp band at a fitting, which marks fuel that has been seeping and evaporating for a while
Since this 750 runs a pressurized injection circuit rather than a gravity feed, a pinhole tends to spray a fine mist that evaporates before reaching the ground. That means the floor can be perfectly dry while the hose is actively leaking. Treat a persistent odor as evidence, not a nuisance.
How Fuel Reaches the Engine on This Machine
The AXi badge marks this KingQuad as electronically fuel-injected. There is no petcock under the tank, no gravity feed, and no float bowl to drain. An electric pump submerged inside the tank pushes gasoline to the throttle body through a hose that a regulator in the pump module holds at steady pressure whenever the key is on, and appreciable pressure remains after shutdown.
Because no valve exists to shut off flow, line-clamping pliers fill that role during the repair. And note where the filter lives: it is integrated into the in-tank pump assembly rather than sitting in an inline canister on the hose you can see. Fresh line cures a cracked or weeping hose but does nothing for a restricted filter element, so keep those two diagnoses distinct.
The Reasons Rubber Fuel Line Gives Out
Two processes chip away at the hose at the same time. From outside, heat cycling drives the plasticizer compounds out of the rubber until the wall goes stiff and faintly glassy. A stiff hose can no longer flex with a frame that twists over rocks and ruts, so hairline splits open at each bend and grow with use. Dry, arid storage conditions speed this up by pulling residual moisture out of the material.
From inside, ethanol does its share. E10 pump gasoline absorbs atmospheric water, and a quad left standing through a long off-season with that mixture in the line slowly loses inner liner material to it. The combination leaves a hose that has hardened on the outside, softened on the inside, and can look entirely acceptable while shedding particulate toward the injector. On a machine this old, age by itself justifies replacement.
Preparation and a Real Word on Safety
- Gloves and eye protection
- A shallow drain pan and a sealed, fuel-rated container
- Injection-rated replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter
- Correct-style clamps, plus a quick-connect release tool if a locking coupler is fitted at the tank
- Line-clamping pliers, required on any model without a fuel valve
- Metric sockets, a small flat driver, a razor knife, rags, and a bright light
Ventilation deserves genuine attention on this job. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it drops to the floor and spreads along it until it reaches a pilot light or a motor that sparks on startup. Work outdoors or immediately inside a fully open door rather than in the back of a closed building. Shut down water heaters and space heaters, unplug trickle chargers, keep a dry chemical extinguisher close, and seal drained fuel instead of leaving an open pan out.
Depressurizing and Removing the Line
Pull the fuel pump fuse or unplug its relay, then crank the starter until the engine stumbles and dies on the fuel left in the rail. Switch the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. The supply hose is now at atmospheric pressure and the pump cannot restart.
Raise the seat and remove the front fender sections and side panels blocking the tank outlet and the hose run. Slide your pan into position and drape a rag over the first fitting you open, because a relieved line still holds fuel that will run out when it separates.
Move any clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. On a quick-connect, depress both tabs evenly and pull straight off in line with the fitting; prying at an angle splits collars that have grown brittle over more than a decade. Twist a stuck hose end on its barb to break the varnish bond rather than hauling on it, and if it holds fast, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away to protect the barb.
Note the path before the old hose is completely out. This is a 4x4 chassis with a front differential and its supporting frame structure, and the power steering components sit in the same forward area, so the line takes a slightly longer route with more clearance points than a two-wheel-drive layout requires. Photograph every clip and guide.
Fitting the New Hose and Proving It Dry
Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly. Extra hose is not a buffer; it finds a frame tube to rub or drifts toward hot exhaust. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and assemble everything dry. Nothing lubricated touches a fuel fitting, because grease, oil, or silicone on the sealing face gives pressurized gasoline a path out from under the clamp. Warm a tight hose end in hot water for half a minute and it will slide on unaided.
Set fresh clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly, snug enough to seal without cutting into the rubber. A self-locking quick-connect at the tank needs no clamp; push until it clicks and then tug firmly to confirm engagement. Route the hose back through all its original clips so it stays clear of the driveline and hot metal.
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off five or six times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the line while the surrounding area is still clean, which makes even a slight weep easy to spot. Wipe both joints and recheck by fingertip. Start the 2010 KingQuad, inspect at idle, blip the throttle, and look a third time before the plastics go back on. Finish with a slow lap of the property and one final check of both connections.
