Knowing them turns a potential roadside problem into a planned afternoon of work.
Catching the Problem Before the Trail Does
Leave the machine parked overnight on clean ground and look for a damp patch or small puddle in the morning. Then use your nose, because a pressurized pinhole often atomizes fuel that evaporates before it can drip. A gasoline smell that lingers near the tank, sharpest in the first minutes after you shut the engine off, is real evidence even when nothing looks wet.
Get a gloved hand on the hose next. A serviceable line compresses and rebounds, while a worn one feels rigid, looks glazed or chalky, and shows hairline cracks on the outside of a bend. Check both fittings for a ring of grit stuck to dried fuel, which marks a joint that has been weeping. Running behavior fills in the rest: bogging as you roll into the throttle, a lean surge at higher rpm, or hesitation that feels like an empty tank with plenty on the gauge all point at fuel delivery.
How the 550 EPS Feeds the Engine

The fuel filter on this platform is part of the in-tank pump assembly instead of sitting inline where you can reach it with the hose off, so replacing the line does nothing about a restricted filter. Depending on the fitting style you find, the supply hose may terminate in a locking quick-connect coupler rather than a barb and clamp, which changes how it separates.
What Wears a Hose Out
Rubber fuel line relies on plasticizers to stay pliable, and those compounds slowly leave the wall with age and heat cycling. The material left behind is hard and glassy, unable to flex without cracking. Because the Touring 550 is a heavy two-up machine, vibration over rough ground focuses that brittleness at the bends, which is where failures start.
Dry climates hasten the hardening, since arid air continuously pulls moisture out of the rubber. Ethanol-blended fuel works the other side of the wall, drawing water into the tank and degrading the inner liner over time, especially during stretches when the machine sits with a partial tank. A hose can look presentable and still be shedding gum and softened material toward the injector, which is why elapsed years count as much as appearance on a machine of this vintage.

Quick-connect couplers release only when both tabs are pressed evenly and the coupler is drawn straight off; prying sideways splits an aged plastic collar. Twist a varnish-bonded hose gently rather than yanking, and slit a truly stuck end lengthwise with a knife. Note the routing as it comes out, since this 4X4 carries front differential and driveshaft hardware ahead of the engine and the hose passes it through defined clips.
Installing and Confirming the Repair
Cut the replacement to the original length so it neither pulls tight nor sags into the frame. Push each end onto its barb dry until it bottoms out, and keep grease, oil, and silicone entirely off the fittings, because lubricant on a sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a route past the clamp. Hot water is the only assist a tight hose end needs. Set clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten evenly, and push a self-locking quick-connect until it clicks, then pull firmly to verify the latch. Reseat the hose in every factory clip so it clears exhaust heat and the front driveline.
