Rubber ages whether a machine gets ridden or not, and the fuel hose on a 2010 Brute Force 750 4x4i has been aging for well over a decade regardless of what the hour meter says. Fitting a new one is an afternoon of easy work, but it starts with respecting the injection system that feeds this 749cc V–twin.

Where the Fuel Line Lives on This Machine

Lift the seat and remove the plastics and you will find the tank with an electric pump mounted inside it and a hose running back to the throttle bodies. There is no petcock anywhere on this quad, because a fuel injected system does not use one. That single absence reshapes the whole procedure: instead of turning a valve, you have to disable the pump and bleed the pressure out of the line before anything comes apart.

The 4x4 chassis with independent rear suspension also means the hose shares its space with front differential hardware and the extra frame structure four wheel drive requires. It travels in clips positioned to keep it away from both the driveline and the hot exhaust, and those positions are worth documenting before you disturb them.

Hardened Rubber and Ethanol Damage

The plasticizers that make fuel hose flexible slowly migrate out of the rubber, and the wall that remains is stiff, slightly shrunken, and unable to seal on a barb the way it did new. Heat cycling from the big twin every time you shut the machine down accelerates the loss, and so does simple calendar time.

Climate is a factor most riders underestimate. In dry regions, low ambient humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the outside in years earlier than the same hose would fail somewhere humid. Meanwhile ethanol–blended pump fuel attacks the inner liner, pulling in water and breaking down the inner surface, with the worst damage occurring when fuel sits still in the hose for long stretches instead of moving through it.

Clues You Should Not Ignore

  • A gasoline smell that hangs around the tank after shutdown, when the system is still holding pressure
  • A wet film, a drip on the skid plate, or a dust crust ringing a fitting where fuel has dried
  • Hairline cracks that open when the hose is flexed, or a chalky gray outer surface
  • A hard section that will not squeeze flat between your fingers
  • Bogging under load, a stumble on hard throttle, or a lean feel at higher rpm

Do not require a puddle before acting. On a pressurized circuit, escaping fuel frequently atomizes and evaporates before it reaches the ground, which is why smell outranks sight as a leak indicator on this machine.

Gear Check and Gasoline Sense

Assemble hose rated for injection pressure in the correct inside diameter, new clamps matched to the fittings present, a quick–disconnect release tool if a locking coupler is fitted, line–clamping pliers to substitute for the missing petcock, gloves, eye protection, a shallow drain pan, a sealed gasoline container, a screwdriver, pliers, sockets for the seat and panels, clean rags, and a sharp blade.

Then think about the air you will be breathing. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools at floor level, exactly where your face goes when you reach under a fender, so ventilation matters most near the ground. Roll the machine outside or open the overhead door all the way, keep chargers and hot drop lights out of the area, and shut off anything in the building running a pilot flame. Wear the gloves throughout, since gasoline goes through skin and strips its oils.

Killing Pressure and Pulling the Hose

Start by removing the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the engine until it stumbles and stalls, which consumes the pressure left in the line. Switch the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Now the circuit is safe to open, and the clamping pliers will keep the tank from siphoning while a fitting is separated.

Slide the drain pan into position and keep a rag over each connection as you open it, because residual fuel remains in the hose after any bleed down. Move clamps well back before disturbing a fitting and twist the hose to shear the varnish bond instead of pulling on it. Handle a quick–connect coupler differently: press the locking tabs squarely and draw the fitting straight off, since prying sideways cracks a collar that has grown brittle. A permanently fused hose end can be slit lengthwise and peeled away.

Dry Assembly and Positive Latching

Cut the new hose to the original length exactly. Slack lets the line sag into the front driveline or wear itself thin against a frame tube, so resist the temptation to leave extra. Wipe varnish and grit off both fittings, then press each hose end on until it stops against the shoulder.

Everything here goes together dry — no grease, no oil, no silicone anywhere on a fuel fitting, because a lubricated sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a channel to escape along. Hot water softens a stiff hose end enough to slide on by hand. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten evenly to firm, not crushed. For a self–locking quick–connect, push until the collar clicks and confirm with a firm tug; no clamp belongs there. Reseat the hose in every original clip before you call it done.

Proving the Repair

Refit the pump fuse or relay, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the line, which lets you examine both connections closely while the engine is still off. Check by eye first, then by fingertip, since a slow seep is often felt before it is seen. Start the engine and inspect a third time with a clean rag while it idles and warms up.

Once nothing shows, reinstall the panels and seat, ride a short loop, and give both fittings a last look after a full heat cycle. Worth remembering on this 2010 Brute Force 750: the fuel filter is part of the in–tank pump assembly rather than an inline element you can swap on the visible hose, so if delivery symptoms outlast a clean installation, that assembly is the next place to look.
