Fifteen years is a long service life for a piece of rubber that holds gasoline. If your 2010 Rancher 420 4x4 still wears the hose it left the crate with, it is living on borrowed time. The good news is that this generation is carbureted, so a petcock on the tank shuts fuel off completely, the feed is gravity driven with no pressure to relieve, and both ends are held on by simple clamps you can reach with one hand.

Signs the Hose Is On Its Way Out

Watch for a cluster of clues rather than one dramatic failure:

  • A small fuel puddle beneath the machine, usually appearing overnight in the same spot
  • Gasoline odor that hangs in an enclosed shed even days after the last ride
  • Visible cracking, especially where the line bends near the petcock or carburetor inlet
  • A hose that feels hard and does not spring back when squeezed
  • Engine bogging under load, lean surging on a climb, or fuel starvation symptoms with plenty of gas in the tank

Fuel residue collects dust, so a slow weep often shows up as a caked ring at a fitting rather than a wet spot. Clean the barbs with a rag, ride, and inspect again.

Prepping the Machine and Yourself

Set out these before you begin:

  • Replacement line sized to the original inside diameter, plus new clamps
  • Rubber gloves, clean rags, and a hose cutter or fresh razor blade
  • Catch pan and an approved sealed container for drained gasoline
  • Flat-blade screwdriver, pliers, and sockets for the seat and tank shroud

Take the ventilation seriously. Fuel vapor is heavier than air and puddles at the floor, which is precisely where your face ends up while you reach under the tank. Roll the quad into the open or throw the garage door wide, and clear the space of heaters, pilot lights, and anything that arcs. Give a hot engine time to cool before you spill anything near the header.

Draining and Disconnecting

Turn the petcock to OFF first, and confirm it actually stops flow rather than assuming it does — a petcock that has been sitting for years sometimes seeps past its internals. Lift the seat, remove the plastic over the tank, and get a clear view of the valve outlet and the hose descending to the carburetor. Slide the pan under, direct the float bowl drain hose into your container, and open the bowl drain screw to empty the carburetor before anything is disconnected.

Move the clamps back along the hose, then break the varnish bond at each barb with a gentle twist. If the hose will not give, split it lengthwise with a blade and strip it off, which is far kinder to the petcock spigot than levering on it. Watch where the line runs as it frees up: this is a 4x4, and the hose has to clear front differential and driveshaft hardware, which means less room to wander along the frame than a two-wheel-drive chassis has. Snap a photo of every clip before it all comes apart.

Why Fuel Lines Harden and Crack

Rubber loses the plasticizers that give it flexibility, and once those are gone the hose behaves like plastic. Repeated heat from the single-cylinder engine and constant vibration through the frame push that stiffness into surface fissures, and riders in dry, low-humidity regions see the whole process compress into fewer seasons because arid air draws remaining moisture out of the wall.

The inside of the hose has a different enemy. Ethanol-blended fuel absorbs water and slowly attacks the inner liner, worst when a Rancher sits for a season with fuel standing in the line. The result is a hose gone soft internally, shedding fine debris toward the carburetor, while the outer surface continues to harden and crack. Nothing about that pattern is unique to this machine — it is simply what fuel hose does over a decade and a half.

Installing the New Line

Cut the new hose to match the length of the piece you removed. Extra length is not insurance; it invites chafing on the frame and kinks where the line doubles back. Press each end fully over its barb until the rubber sits past the bead. Do this dry. A brief soak of the hose end in hot water makes it pliable enough to slide on, and that is the only assist you should need. Grease, oil, and silicone all belong nowhere near a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing face lets fuel creep out and lets the hose migrate off the barb over time.

Place the fresh clamps just behind the bead on each end and tighten evenly, firm enough to seal without biting into the rubber. Route the hose back through its original guides so it stays away from the exhaust and clear of the front driveline, then close the float bowl drain screw.

Leak Check and Final Details

Turn the petcock to ON and let the line fill under gravity while you watch both joints. Wipe them dry with a clean rag, wait several minutes, then inspect again for any bead of fuel. Start the engine and let it idle so vibration works on the connections, and check a third time before you go anywhere. Follow that with a short lap and one last look.

While the system is drained, handle the inline fuel filter and the vent hose off the tank cap. A pinched vent will starve a gravity feed exactly the way a collapsed line does, and an old filter packed with sediment reproduces every symptom you just chased down. That filter being out in the open is a real advantage of the carbureted 420; on later injected Ranchers the filter lives inside the tank with the pump. Once your joints stay dry, bolt the plastics back on and put the 2010 Rancher back to work.
