You back the 2010 Rancher out of the shed and there is a dark spot on the floor where it was sitting, plus a gasoline smell that will not clear. That combination almost always traces back to a hose or a fitting rather than anything expensive, and on a carbureted Rancher 420 it is a repair you can complete at home with hand tools and an hour of patience.
Confirming It Really Is the Hose
Get the machine in good light with gloves on and follow the fuel path with your eyes and fingers. Run a clean dry rag along the hose and around each fitting, then look at the rag; a damp streak tells you far more than staring at a dusty engine bay. Fuel seepage that has been going on a while leaves a collar of grit stuck to the fitting where dried gas has collected dirt.
Inspect the hose surface for hairline cracking and a chalky gray cast, and flex a section gently. Healthy hose bends smoothly and springs back. A failing one feels hard, crackles audibly, and holds the bend. Also check the drivability side of the ledger, because a hose that is restricting or collapsing internally will make the engine bog under load, hesitate when you open the throttle, or act like the tank is nearly dry when it is not.
The Chemistry Behind a Tired Line
Two processes run at once. Engine heat cycling gradually drives the plasticizers out of the rubber, and once the compound stiffens it can no longer squeeze itself onto the barb it is clamped to. That is why a joint can start weeping without any visible split. Riders in dry country see this arrive early, since low humidity continuously draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens the outer jacket.
At the same time, ethanol blended fuel absorbs water and works on the inner liner, softening it and depositing gum and varnish, especially during any stretch when the quad sits with fuel in the system. The upshot is a hose that has failed structuRally while still looking usable. On a machine from 2010 running its original line, calendar age is a perfectly good reason to replace it.
What Kind of Fuel System You Are Opening
The 2010 Rancher 420 is carbureted and gravity fed. There is a manual petcock below the tank that actually stops flow, the hose is unpressurized, and the carburetor has a float bowl drain screw for emptying the bowl into a container. Both ends are barbed fittings with spring or wire clamps.
That is worth stating clearly because injected Ranchers from later in this platform's run behave differently at every step. No petcock exists on those, so the line must be pinched with clamping pliers or the pump circuit shut down and the pressure bled off first, their filter is inside the tank as part of the pump module instead of inline, and the tank connection is often a self locking quick connect that takes no clamp. Gathering Supplies and Handling Fuel Sensibly
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection for working underneath
- Replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter, cut slightly long
- New clamps, because the factory spring clamps relax with age
- An approved sealed container for drained gasoline plus a funnel
- Needle nose pliers, hose pick, sharp razor blade, flat blade screwdriver
- Sockets for the seat latch and the plastic panels over the tank, and plenty of rags
Take the vapor seriously. Gasoline fumes are heavier than air and pool at floor level, so open the garage door completely or work outside instead of relying on a window well above the ground. Pull the battery negative terminal before you begin, keep grinders, heaters, and any flame far from the area, and keep the container capped when you are not actively draining into it.
Working the Old Line Free
Shut the petcock. Remove the seat and the plastics covering the tank so you can see the valve, the entire hose run, and the carburetor inlet at once. Set your container under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty through its tube. Even with the valve closed the hose is still full, so put a rag under whichever fitting you open first.
Slide each clamp back along the hose before disturbing the joint, then twist the hose on the barb to break the varnish bond instead of pulling straight against it. A hardened end that will not release should be slit lengthwise with the razor and peeled off. Because this is a 4x4 with electric shift, the line routes around the front driveline and extra frame structure with the shift motor harness nearby, so note the clips and guides carefully as the hose comes out.
Fitting the New Hose and Signing Off
Cut the replacement to match the original length so it neither rubs the frame nor pulls at the barbs. Seat each end fully and dry, pushing until it bottoms against the shoulder of the fitting. Nothing slippery belongs on a fuel connection, so skip grease, oil, and silicone spray entirely; a lubricated barb gives fuel a path to creep out weeks later. Dip a stiff end in hot water if it fights you.
Place the new clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and snug them evenly. Route the hose through its original guides, clear of the exhaust and the front driveshaft, with no kinks anywhere. Close the bowl drain, open the petcock, and give it two full minutes with the engine off while gravity looks for a gap. Wipe both joints with a dry rag and read the rag. Start the engine, let it idle until warm, and inspect again while it is vibrating, since a marginal clamp often seeps only then. Reinstall the plastics and seat after the repair has proven dry.
