There is no valve to turn off, so the preparation matters more than the wrenching.

Buy the Right Parts Before You Start

Hose selection is where this repair succeeds or fails. You need line rated for the pressure an injected system generates, and it has to match the inside diameter of the piece coming off the machine. A hose that measures even slightly large will not grip the barb correctly no matter how much you tighten the clamp, and a hose rated only for gravity feed can swell or seep under pressure. Ventilation and Gasoline Handling

That puts it at the same height as furnace pilots, water heater burners, battery chargers, and any dropped light with a hot filament. Roll the machine outdoors if the weather cooperates. Working in a shop means the door goes all the way up and everything capable of throwing a spark leaves the room. Keep the drain container capped when you are not pouring into it, and change gloves rather than working with fuel-soaked ones.

What Actually Destroys a Fuel Hose

Age is the primary culprit, and it works from both directions. Heat cycling drives the flexibilizing compounds out of the rubber over the years, leaving a wall that has gone stiff and occasionally chalky. A hose in that condition can no longer absorb the flexing that chassis movement demands of it, so fine cracks form on the surface and gradually deepen. Owners in dry regions see the process run faster, because low ambient humidity strips moisture out of the outer wall.

The inner surface faces a different problem. Ethanol-blended gasoline carries water in suspension and slowly attacks the liner, and fuel left standing in the hose between jobs leaves gum and varnish deposits behind. Fitting the Replacement and Verifying It Holds

Grease, oil, and silicone spray on a fuel fitting leave a film that lets pressurized gasoline creep out from under a clamp, which is the classic reason a repair weeps a week after it looked perfect. A stiff hose end softens fine with a few seconds in hot water. Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly to snug, and where a self-locking quick-connect is used, push until it clicks and confirm the latch with a solid pull rather than adding a clamp. Return the hose to every original guide and sweep the bars lock to lock to verify nothing touches.

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking. The pump pressurizes the line each cycle, letting you inspect both joints while they are still dry enough to show a fresh wet mark. Wipe, look, and look again, then start the engine and repeat the check at idle and after a throttle blip. Give it several minutes of running before the plastics go back on.
