The 2010 Rancher 420 4x4 AT runs programmed fuel injection, so the hose between the tank and the throttle body is held under pressure by a pump inside the tank, and there is no hand valve anywhere to shut it down. The order of operations is what makes this job clean.
Killing the Pressure Before Anything Else
The correct opening move is electrical. Pull the fuel pump fuse, start the engine, and let it run until it dies on its own. That stall is your confirmation that the line has bled down to atmospheric pressure. Turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable so nothing can energize the pump while your hands are in the fuel path, then keep line-clamping pliers within reach to pinch off whatever fuel is still sitting in the hose. Carbureted utility quads never required this dance, since a petcock under the tank stopped gravity feed instantly and a float bowl drain emptied the rest. Hardened Rubber and Ethanol Damage
The reason the hose needs replacing at all comes down to chemistry running on two fronts. Heat cycling drives the flexibility-preserving additives out of the rubber over the years, and the wall goes from soft and springy to hard, sometimes with a chalky bloom. A stiffened hose cannot absorb the flexing a working chassis puts through it, so cracks open at the bends and travel inward. Dry, low-humidity climates speed this up because there is little moisture in the air to keep the surface pliable.
From the other side, ethanol-blended gasoline holds water in suspension and slowly breaks down the inner liner, leaving gum and varnish behind whenever fuel sits in the line for months at a stretch. Set the space up properly. Gasoline vapor is denser than air, so it flows downward and collects along the floor instead of drifting out an open window. Pilot lights, chargers, and dropped incandescent lamps all live at that level. Outdoors is the ideal answer. If the shop is your only option, open the door completely, clear out every ignition source, and carry the fuel-soaked rags out of the building when you are done.
Peeling the Old Hose Off Its Fittings
With the system dead and depressurized, remove the seat and whatever panel blocks the tank outlet. Slide the drain pan into place and drape a rag over the joint before you open it. Move clamps well back along the hose rather than fighting them at the fitting, and release a quick-connect by depressing both tabs evenly and pulling straight off, since angled prying cracks collars that have spent years in engine heat. Where varnish has bonded the hose to its barb, a gentle twist usually breaks the bond, and if it does not, slit the hose down its length and peel it away rather than risking the fitting. Because this is a 4x4 with an automatic transmission, the hose runs closer to the front differential and driveshaft than it would on a two-wheel-drive Rancher and picks up an extra clearance point or two, so log the routing and every retaining clip before the old piece leaves the chassis.
Dry Fittings and Fresh Clamps
Cut the new hose to the original length and push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder. Assemble dry, without exception. Grease, oil, and silicone spray on a fuel fitting leave a slick film that pressurized gasoline can follow out from under a clamp, and that is the single most common cause of a repair that weeps a week later. If a hose end will not slide, hold it in hot water for a few seconds. Set each clamp just behind the raised bead on its fitting and tighten evenly to snug. Testing Under Pressure
