Every part of the 2010 Rancher 420 2x4 was built to work, and the fuel line is the one component that can shut the whole machine down while costing almost nothing to replace. This is a carbureted quad, which means a manual fuel valve, gravity feed, ordinary hose clamps, and a float bowl you can drain — a considerably simpler starting point than a pressurized injected system.

Setting Up the Job Properly

Before the first clamp moves, get the workspace right. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air; it sinks to the floor and travels, which is why an open window overhead accomplishes nothing. Position the Rancher outside or just inside a fully open door, kill any pilot light or portable heater in the building, keep a fire extinguisher within arm's reach, seal your fuel container as soon as it holds gas, and move soaked rags outdoors rather than stacking them near the bench.

With that handled, collect gloves and eye protection, a drain pan, a gasoline-rated sealed container, replacement hose sized to this Rancher's inside diameter, fresh clamps or spring clips, pliers, a razor blade, a flat-blade screwdriver, and a stack of rags.

What Kills a Fuel Line Over Time

Rubber hose does not fail from mileage so much as from age and exposure. Heat radiating off the cylinder drives the plasticizers out of the compound, and a hose that has lost them turns stiff. Stiff hose no longer absorbs the vibration and frame flex of a working utility quad, so it cracks — almost always at a bend or beneath a clamp where the material is already under stress.

Location matters more than people expect. In dry, low-humidity regions the air draws moisture out of the hose wall relentlessly, and lines harden years ahead of the same part in a wet climate. From the inside, ethanol-blended pump gas is the other culprit: sitting still for a season, it absorbs water and slowly attacks the liner, softening the material and creating gum that can restrict flow to the carburetor. Since neither process is visible from outside, hose age deserves as much weight as hose appearance.

Reading the Symptoms

  • A puddle or wet streak on the floor after the Rancher sits with the valve on
  • A pronounced gasoline smell under the seat area
  • Surface cracking, glazing, or a chalky texture along the hose
  • A stiff section that will not compress when pinched
  • Bogging under load, lean-feeling running at higher rpm, or symptoms of running out of fuel with gas in the tank

Because feed is by gravity on this model, even a modest internal restriction shows up as a bog when the engine is working hardest, typically climbing or pulling a load.

Emptying the System and Pulling the Hose

Close the fuel valve and let the engine run until it stalls on its own, which drains most of the float bowl. Set your pan underneath, open the bowl drain screw, and let the rest out before snugging the screw back down. Remove the seat and any panel blocking the tank fitting, then photograph how the hose sits in its clips so reassembly is not guesswork.

Retract each clamp along the hose before touching the joint. Break the varnish bond by twisting the hose gently at the barb rather than pulling on it hard, and keep a rag pressed against the tank connection since the hose still holds fuel even with the valve shut. When an end has essentially cemented itself to a fitting, run a razor blade down its length and peel it off; the hose is scrap anyway and the fitting is not.

Installing the Replacement Without Creating a Leak

Cut the new hose to the length of the old one. Too much slack and it rubs the frame or drifts toward the exhaust; too little and it puts tension on both fittings every time the engine shifts on its mounts. Slide each end all the way onto its barb until it bottoms out, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone are all wrong here, because a lubricated fitting cannot seal properly and gives fuel a path past the clamp. Hot water is the only aid a tight hose end needs.

Position the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to grip without cutting a groove in the rubber. Route the finished hose back through every clip you photographed, keeping it away from the exhaust and clear of the shift linkage on this foot-shift model.

Verification Before You Ride

Open the fuel valve and let the system sit while you watch. A gravity-feed leak often takes thirty seconds to show itself, so give both joints a solid minute of attention under a bright light with a dry rag in hand. If nothing appears, start the engine and let it idle for several minutes, checking again as vibration and heat come into the picture. Blip the throttle a few times and look one more time.

Reinstall the seat and take a short shakedown ride near the shop rather than heading straight out for the day. And if fuel delivery still feels weak after a clean install, the strainer screen inside the fuel valve is the next thing to inspect, since it can restrict flow whether the hose is new or not.
