Replacing the fuel line on a 2010 Outlander MAX 400 XT is a short job with one genuine hazard, and that hazard is not the wrenching. It is the fuel. Handle the gasoline properly and set the space up correctly, and everything after that is straightforward hose work that any owner with intermediate skills can finish confidently in an afternoon.
Set the Space Up Before the Tools Come Out
Fumes from gasoline behave in a way that catches people out: they are denser than air, so instead of rising and exiting a window near the ceiling they sink and spread across the floor, which happens to be where water heaters draw combustion air, where shop heaters sit, and where a dropped power cord can arc. Roll the door all the way up or push the machine outside entirely. Keep the container you drain into capped except while you are actually pouring, and clear out grinders, torches, and anything with a standing pilot light before you open a single fitting. Wear nitrile gloves throughout rather than washing up afterward, since gasoline strips the oils from your skin within minutes and its additives absorb readily.

One Valve Instead of a Fuse
The Rotax 400 single in this XT is carbureted, which simplifies everything ahead of you. Fuel leaves the tank through a shutoff valve and reaches the carburetor under gravity with no pump in the circuit, so closing the valve truly stops the flow. The carburetor contributes a float bowl drain screw that lets you empty the bowl deliberately, and both hose ends are ordinary barbs with clamps. Contrast that with injected Outlanders, which have no valve, keep the supply line pressurized by an electric pump inside the tank, may use self-locking quick-connect couplers requiring no clamp, and force you to pull the pump fuse and let the engine stall before touching a fitting. On this machine you turn a knob. The 4x4 driveline does put the hose near front differential hardware and a couple of additional frame clearance points, and the two-up MAX frame lengthens the run slightly versus a single-seat Outlander.
Where the Rubber Starts to Fail
Hose breaks down from both sides simultaneously. On the outside, engine heat cycling plus sunlight and weather drive plasticizers out of the rubber compound, and losing them leaves the wall stiff and unable to flex with a chassis that twists constantly. Fine surface checking then deepens into cracks. Dry, low-humidity regions push this along faster because arid air draws moisture out of the material year round. On the inside, ethanol-blended gasoline holds water against the liner and slowly degrades it, and fuel left to oxidize during a long layup leaves gum that either narrows the bore or breaks loose and plugs the carburetor's small passages. Standing fuel does more harm than fuel that gets burned.
Evidence of a Line Near the End
Look for a damp patch or small puddle beneath the quad after it has been parked, which a low-pressure gravity system produces readily rather than misting away. Take a persistent gasoline odor seriously even with no visible source. Examine the hose at every bend for hairline cracks and a chalky texture, and check both fittings for a dried, dirt-collecting ring that marks a slow weep. Pinch the hose in several spots: healthy rubber yields and rebounds while aged rubber creaks and stays deformed. Watch the engine too, because a restricted or partly collapsed line shows up as bogging under load, lean surging at cruise, or stumbles that feel exactly like a tank running dry.
Disconnecting the Old Hose
Close the fuel valve, loosen the float bowl drain screw, and let the carburetor empty into your container. Remove the seat and any panel blocking the run from tank to carburetor, and slide a catch pan into position underneath. Photograph the routing and each clip before disturbing anything, because rerouting a new hose incorrectly is how it ends up rubbing a frame tube or sitting closer to the exhaust than it should.
Slide the clamps well back along the hose instead of fighting them at the fittings. Where varnish has bonded old rubber onto a barb, slit the hose lengthwise with a razor and peel it off rather than twisting, which protects the carburetor inlet and the valve outlet from damage. Keep a rag beneath each joint as it opens, since low points in the line hold fuel even after a thorough drain.
New Hose, Then a Careful Leak Check
Cut the replacement to match the original piece so the line neither sags into a frame tube nor pulls at its ends when the chassis works. Push each end onto its barb dry and seat it fully past the raised bead, using a few seconds in hot water to soften a stubborn end. Keep grease, oil, and silicone completely away from the fittings, because lubricant stops the rubber from gripping and creates the very channel fuel needs to escape. Set new clamps just behind the bead at both connections and tighten evenly, firm enough to seal without cutting into the hose wall. If an inline filter is going in, follow its flow direction arrow and support its weight so it does not hang from the line, then thread everything back through the original clips clear of exhaust heat.
Tighten the drain screw, open the fuel valve, and let gravity fill the line and float bowl while you watch both fittings. Wipe them dry with a clean rag and inspect a second time, since fresh seepage is obvious on clean rubber and easy to miss on damp rubber. Start the engine, let it idle several minutes, and check again while everything is hot and vibrating before taking a slow lap and giving it a final look. Worth remembering: this carbureted XT keeps its filter inline where you can reach it, unlike injected models that place the filter inside the tank with the pump.
