By the final year of Wolverine 350 production, the fuel system on this machine had been proven for well over a decade with no complexity added. That is welcome news for an owner facing a hardened, cracked hose: the repair is short, the parts are inexpensive, and the whole thing happens with hand tools you already own.
Inspecting the Hose Properly
A visual glance from a standing position tells you almost nothing. Turn the petcock to OFF, remove the seat and the panel over the tank, and get a light on the full length of the hose. Run your fingers along it and feel for hardness, especially in the two sections that have been living under clamps. Bend it into an easy curve and watch the outer surface, since fine cracks routinely stay hidden until the wall flexes. Squeeze the middle and note whether it feels springy or glassy.
Check the fittings just as carefully. A ring of dust caked to a fitting is dried fuel residue and proves the joint has been seeping, even if it is dry at the moment you look. Any swollen, spongy, or ballooned section means the inner liner has already broken down and the hose is on borrowed time.
Behavior That Points at the Fuel Line
Beyond what you can see, watch how the 2009 Wolverine runs. Bogging under load on a climb, hesitation when you snap the throttle open, and a lean surge at steady cruise all suggest that fuel is not arriving as fast as the engine wants it. A gasoline puddle under the machine after it has been parked and a smell that lingers in the garage hours after shutdown are the more obvious cues.
The important point is that a failing hose does not need to leak to cause trouble. A liner that has deteriorated can collapse slightly under gravity feed or send flakes of material into the carburetor inlet, producing real fuel starvation while the outside of the hose stays perfectly dry. Owners frequently rejet or clean a carburetor two or three times before looking at the hose that caused it.
Why Fuel Hose Has a Shelf Life
Rubber fuel hose is soft when new because of plasticizing compounds blended into it. Those compounds migrate out over years, leaving a wall that is hard and brittle instead of pliable. At that point ordinary engine vibration and chassis flex begin etching hairline cracks, and every heat cycle from the air-cooled cylinder drives them deeper. Machines in dry, arid regions get there sooner, because low ambient humidity pulls moisture from the rubber and accelerates the hardening.
Ethanol-blended gasoline attacks from the other side. Alcohol in the fuel draws water in and gradually degrades the inner liner, and fuel left standing through a long layup leaves gum and varnish behind. Between the two mechanisms, a hose that is more than a decade old has earned replacement whether or not it has visibly failed.
Fuel System Configuration and Access
The 2009 Wolverine 350 is carbureted. A manual petcock with ON, RESERVE, and OFF handles shutoff, a short rubber hose feeds the Mikuni carburetor inlet by gravity, ordinary clamps hold both ends, and a float bowl drain screw at the bottom of the carburetor lets you empty it deliberately. There is no pump and no pressure in the line at any point.
On an injected quad the sequence would start very differently, with a pump fuse pulled and residual pressure relieved before a single fitting came loose, and the fuel filter would be sealed inside the tank rather than accessible. This final-year 350 is the two-wheel-drive version of the platform. Without a front differential and front driveshaft filling the area under the engine, you get more room to reach the carburetor end of the hose than a 4x4 chassis allows.
Supplies and Working Safely with Gasoline
- Fuel-rated replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter
- Two new clamps plus a spare, spring clip or small worm-gear type
- Nitrile gloves, eye protection, and a good supply of clean rags
- An approved fuel container and a shallow drain pan
- Flat-blade screwdriver, small pliers, sockets for the seat and panels, sharp utility knife
Set the space up before you open anything. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, which means it sinks and pools at floor level precisely where you will be kneeling. Roll the quad outdoors or open the door completely; a window overhead does not move vapor that is sitting on the concrete. Extinguish pilot lights, unplug shop heaters, keep flame and sparks well clear, disconnect the battery negative cable so nothing can arc, and let the engine cool fully before you start.
Removing and Replacing the Line
With the petcock closed and the bodywork off, slide the pan under the carburetor and open the float bowl drain screw. Let the bowl empty into your container, then snug the screw back down. Move each clamp back along the hose and clear of its barb. Twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond before pulling, then pull straight off rather than levering sideways, because the petcock spigot cracks long before an old hose surrenders. If an end has bonded to the fitting, slit the last inch lengthwise and peel the rubber away. Note the clips and routing as it comes out.
Cut the new hose to match the original exactly, then push each end fully onto its barb, past the raised bead, working it on dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no place on a fuel connection — anything slick on the sealing surface creates a leak path and can wash contamination into the carburetor. Hot water for half a minute makes a stiff end slide on easily. Position the clamps just behind the bead on each fitting, tighten evenly to firm without crushing, and route the hose through its original guides with a smooth curve clear of the cylinder head and exhaust.
Proving It Out and Finishing the Job
Turn the petcock to ON and let gravity fill the line and the float bowl. Watch both connections for a full minute, wipe them dry with a clean rag, and check again, because a dry surface reveals a slow weep that a wet one masks. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and inspect a final time at idle before the panels go back on.
While everything is open, replace any inline filter fitted between the petcock and the carburetor. A filter packed with rust and varnish produces exactly the lean, bogging symptoms you just eliminated, and a new hose will not flush it. From here on, close the petcock whenever the machine will sit for more than a few days — keeping fuel out of the hose and bowl is the cheapest maintenance you can perform.
