How to Put a Fresh Fuel Line on a 2009 Grizzly 350 2x4

Nobody plans a fuel line replacement. It gets added to the list after a wet spot shows up on the concrete or after the engine starts falling flat halfway up a familiar hill. Either way, the 2009 Grizzly 350 2x4 makes this a manageable Saturday morning task, and doing it before the hose fails outright is a lot more pleasant than doing it on a trail with a multi-tool.

A Gravity Circuit With Only One Hose

Fuel delivery on this 350 could not be more direct. A manual valve threads into the bottom of the tank, and a single length of rubber carries fuel downhill to the carburetor inlet. The carburetor's float bowl sits at the low point with a drain screw threaded into it. That is the entire circuit. No pump runs when you turn the key, nothing holds residual pressure, and there are no plastic quick-connect couplers waiting to crack in your fingers — all of which are realities on later fuel-injected utility quads but simply do not apply to a carbureted machine like this one.

The two-wheel-drive layout also keeps things tidy. Without a front differential and drive shaft crowding the area under the tank, the hose has a clean, short path and both ends stay reachable once the seat and side panel come off.

Hose Chemistry and the Ethanol Factor

The rubber in a fuel line relies on plasticizers to stay flexible, and engine heat cooks those out a little more with every ride. What remains behaves like stiff tubing rather than hose, and the tight radius near the fuel valve becomes the spot where cracks first open up. Riders in dry country see this arrive early, because low humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the surface inward.

Ethanol works the opposite face of the same rubber. Alcohol in pump gas pulls water into the fuel and eats at the inner liner, leaving a tacky layer that sheds particles toward the carburetor jets. If the Grizzly has spent stretches parked with fuel in the system, evaporation concentrates gum and varnish inside the line, narrowing the bore and bonding the hose to its barbs. The result on a machine this age is a line that is brittle outside, soft inside, and restricted in the middle.

Clues You Should Not Ride Past

Watch the fuel path for any of these:

  • A puddle beneath the quad or a wet streak running down the frame after parking
  • A gasoline smell that hangs around the tank area, even with the valve closed
  • Surface crazing, splits, or a chalky gray tone on the hose
  • Bogging under load, hesitation on climbs, or lean surging that mimics a near-empty tank
  • A grime ring at either barb where seeping fuel has collected dust

Do not wait for a drip to appear before acting. A fine crack on the upper side of the hose can weep enough fuel to smell without ever leaving a visible mark on the floor, and every ride works that crack a little wider.

Prep Work, Protective Gear, and Airflow

Set this out before you loosen anything:

  • Fuel-rated hose in the correct inside diameter, cut a little long so you can trim to match
  • New clamps or spring clips, since aged clips have lost their tension
  • Nitrile or rubber gloves plus eye protection
  • A sealed, approved fuel can and a shallow drain pan
  • Screwdriver, pliers, sockets for the bodywork, and a sharp blade
  • A generous stack of clean rags

Now the genuinely important part: gasoline vapor is heavier than air and sinks to floor level, where water heater pilots, battery chargers, and outlets live. Roll the machine outside if you can, and if you must stay in the garage, open the door completely and shut off anything that cycles or sparks. Cap drained fuel right away and keep an extinguisher where you can grab it without walking around the quad.

Taking the Line Off Without Damaging Fittings

Turn the fuel valve to OFF. Position the drain pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty through its overflow tube before closing the screw again. With the valve shut and the bowl empty, the hose holds almost nothing, and that is the whole reason a carbureted machine is friendlier to work on than an injected one.

Slide the clamp at the carburetor inlet well back along the hose. Twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond, then ease it off the barb. If the rubber has hardened onto the fitting and refuses to move, slit it lengthwise with your knife and peel it away. That protects the aluminum inlet, which is easy to damage by prying. Repeat at the valve end, then check the valve screen for sediment while the access is open — carbureted models give you that inspection point, while injected quads keep their filter inside the tank with the pump.

Dry Fit, Clamp, and Route

Lay the removed hose alongside the new stock and cut square at the same length. Extra hose is a liability, not a spare: it sags into the frame, rubs, or forms a high loop that can trap air in a gravity feed. Press each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, and install everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone belong nowhere near a fuel fitting, because a lubricated barb will not seal and lets vibration walk the hose off over time. A few seconds in hot water softens stiff new rubber enough to slide on with thumb pressure.

Locate each clamp just behind the raised bead on its fitting and snug it evenly — firm grip, no biting into the hose. Feed the line back through the same frame opening it came out of, maintaining a continuous downhill slope, then pull on both ends to confirm they are locked.

Confirming No Weeps Before Loading Up

Open the fuel valve and give it a minute before you touch anything. Slip a clean, dry rag beneath each connection and study it for the slightest discoloration. Start the engine, let it idle until the float bowl fills and the machine settles into a steady rhythm, then inspect both joints and the concrete under the quad. Blip the throttle several times to work the system and take one final look. When it all comes back dry, reinstall the seat and panel, wipe up any spillage, dispose of the drained fuel and old hose properly, and put your Grizzly 350 back in service with confidence.
