A 2009 KingQuad 750AXi with power steering is now well past the age where its original fuel hose can be assumed sound. Rubber does not care how few hours are on the meter, and a line manufactured a decade and a half ago has been quietly losing flexibility the entire time. This is a straightforward repair worth doing before the hose forces the issue.
Confirming the Fuel Delivery Setup
The AXi in the model name means electronic fuel injection, and Suzuki had the big KingQuad running injection well before 2009. You will not find a petcock under the tank on this machine. An electric pump sits submerged inside the tank and holds the supply hose to the throttle body at regulated pressure whenever the key is on, with residual pressure lingering after shutdown. Everything about the removal sequence follows from that.
Two related details are worth knowing. First, there is no fuel valve to close, so line-clamping pliers do that job instead. Second, the filter element lives inside the tank as part of the pump module rather than in an inline canister on the visible hose. New line resolves cracking, hardening, and weeping. A restricted filter is a separate repair entirely.
Why the Original Hose Is Probably Due
Fuel line goes hard from the outside in. The plasticizer compounds that keep rubber pliable migrate out of the material as heat cycles work on it, and after fifteen or more years of warming up and cooling down, the wall has turned stiff and faintly glassy. A stiff hose cannot flex with a chassis that twists across uneven ground, so hairline splits form where the hose bends and deepen with each ride.
Ethanol handles the inside. E10 pump gas draws atmospheric moisture into itself, and a KingQuad that has sat through multiple off-seasons with that blend in the line loses inner liner material steadily to the alcohol and water combination. Dry storage climates make the outer hardening worse still, since low humidity pulls residual moisture out of the rubber wall. On a machine this age, calendar time alone is reason enough to replace the hose preventively.
What a Failing Line Tells You
- Gasoline odor around the seat and tank that persists after the engine is shut down
- A damp stain or shallow puddle on the skid plate or floor after the quad has been parked overnight
- Visible crazing, a chalky white film, or a length of hose that will not compress under a firm pinch
- Bogging when the engine is loaded, a stumble on hard acceleration, or symptoms that imitate a nearly empty tank
- Grit caked in a wet ring at a fitting, the signature of a slow weep that keeps evaporating
Because this is a pressurized system, a small breach frequently atomizes into a mist that evaporates before it forms a drop. A strong fuel smell with a dry floor beneath it is still a real leak and deserves the same response.
Tools, Parts, and Handling Gasoline
- Rubber or nitrile gloves and eye protection
- A drain pan and a sealed container rated for fuel
- Hose rated for injection pressure, matched to the factory inside diameter
- New clamps in the correct style, plus a quick-connect release tool if a locking coupler is fitted
- Line-clamping pliers, since no petcock exists on this model
- Metric hand tools, a razor knife, clean rags, and a work light
Gasoline vapor is denser than air and settles along the floor, then travels until it encounters a water heater pilot or a sparking motor. Work outdoors or immediately inside a fully open door, extinguish pilot lights and space heaters, unplug battery chargers, and keep a dry chemical extinguisher within arm's reach. Seal any drained fuel rather than leaving it exposed in a pan.
Taking the Old Line Out
Relieve pressure before anything else. Pull the fuel pump fuse or unplug the relay, crank the engine until it sputters out on what remains in the rail, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. With the pump unable to run, the circuit is safe to open.
Lift the seat and remove the front fender pieces and side panels covering the tank outlet and the hose route toward the throttle body. Slide the pan underneath and lay a rag over the first connection you break, because a depressurized line still holds a couple of ounces that will spill.
Retract clamps well back along the hose before disturbing a joint. With a quick-connect coupler, compress both locking tabs squarely and pull straight off without side load, since fifteen-year-old plastic collars crack readily when levered. Twist a stubborn hose end gently on the barb to break the varnish bond instead of pulling harder. If it stays locked on, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away, which spares the fitting.
Map the routing before the hose is fully free. Four-wheel-drive on this KingQuad puts a front differential and additional frame structure in the area, and the power steering hardware occupies some of the same forward real estate, so the line runs a slightly longer path with more clearance points than a simple two-wheel-drive layout would need. Photograph each clip and guide.
Installation and Verifying a Dry Result
Cut the replacement to the original length, using the old hose as your template. Extra length is not protection; it becomes a chafe point on a frame tube or sags toward exhaust heat. Push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, assembling dry throughout. Grease, oil, and silicone have no place on a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives pressurized gasoline a route out from beneath the clamp. Dip a tight hose end in hot water for thirty seconds instead.
Place new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug without biting into the rubber. Where the tank end uses a self-locking quick-connect, push until it clicks and then pull hard to confirm the latch caught; that fitting takes no clamp. Reinstall the hose into every original retainer so it holds its intended shape away from the front driveline and hot surfaces.
Test it before you ride. Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off five or six times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line while the area is still clean and dry. Inspect both joints, wipe them, and check again by fingertip. Start the 2009 KingQuad 750AXi Power Steering, watch the connections at idle, blip the throttle, and look a third time. After several dry minutes, reinstall the plastics, take a slow lap of the yard, and inspect both fittings one last time.
