A gasoline smell in the shed, a stumble under load, or a stain that keeps reappearing on the skid plate all point toward the delivery hose on a 2009 KingQuad 750AXi. Since this 722cc single runs fuel injection, the hose in question is a pressurized part, and that changes both how it fails and how you approach it.
Symptoms Worth Investigating
- Raw fuel odor concentrated near the tank and under the seat, sharpest in the minutes right after shutdown
- A wet ring, dark patch, or slow drip appearing beneath the machine once it has parked
- Surface crazing, a chalky texture, or a stretch of hose that feels glassy and stiff when pinched
- Dirt packed into a band at a clamp, the residue of fuel that seeped and evaporated
- Bogging on throttle, a lean surge at steady cruise, or starvation symptoms that grow worse as the tank empties
The important nuance on an AXi model is that escaping pressurized fuel frequently atomizes and evaporates before a drop can form. A dry floor does not clear the hose. If the smell persists, keep looking.
What Sits Between the Tank and the Throttle Body
Fuel injection on this platform means an electric pump module dropped into the top of the tank, carrying the strainer and filter element with it. The hose you can reach is a plain delivery line from that module to the throttle body, with nothing serviceable partway along it. There is no petcock anywhere on the machine, so the line stays pressurized after shutdown until you release it deliberately. As a 4x4, this KingQuad also threads that hose past front driveline hardware and additional frame structure, giving you tighter clearance than a two-wheel-drive layout would.
The Reasons Rubber Fails
Two processes work on the hose simultaneously from opposite sides. Externally, engine heat drives out the plasticizers that keep the wall pliable, and a stiffened hose cannot absorb vibration, so the surface crazes and cracks push toward the bore. That hardening accelerates sharply in dry climates, where ambient air keeps stripping moisture from the jacket even while the quad sits. Internally, ethanol-blended fuel absorbs water and gradually degrades the liner, with the worst damage on a machine that spends months parked with gas in the system. Together they produce a hose that is brittle outside, soft inside, and quietly feeding particles toward the injector.
Getting Set Up
- Rubber or nitrile gloves plus eye protection
- A drain pan and a sealed container rated for gasoline
- Injection-rated replacement hose in the original inside diameter, not economy carburetor line
- Fresh clamps in the style already fitted, and a release tool if the pump outlet carries a plastic quick-connect
- Line-clamping pliers, the practical substitute for a petcock this machine never had
- Sockets for the seat and plastics, a razor knife, a small flat blade, and plenty of rags
On the safety side, be specific rather than casual. Gasoline vapor is denser than air, so it pools across the floor instead of drifting out an open window — and floor level is where a furnace pilot or shop heater draws air. Do this outside if you can. Indoors, open the overhead door all the way so air moves low in the space, kill every flame and heating element in the building, and keep an extinguisher close. Pull the battery negative once pressure has been relieved.
Relieving Pressure and Extracting the Hose
Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay first, then crank the starter until the engine stalls and will not restart. That is your pressure relief. Key off, battery disconnected, then take off the seat and the side panels covering the tank so both fittings are in the open. Position the drain pan and lay a rag across the first joint you plan to open, since a depressurized line still holds fuel.
Slide clamps well back along the hose before attempting anything. Squeeze spring clamps to release; loosen worm-gear clamps and move them aside. A plastic quick-connect at the pump flange comes apart when you depress its tabs squarely and pull straight off, and it must stay square because aged collars split under sideways force. Where the old hose has varnished onto a barb, twist a quarter turn to break the bond or slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it off — far kinder to the throttle body spigot than a hard pull. Note each clip and clearance point, especially near the front differential, and take photos before the hose is completely out.
Fitting the New Line and Closing the Job Out
Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly. A hose left long droops into the front driveline or rubs a frame edge until it wears through. Push both ends fully onto their barbs until they bottom out, and install them dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone anywhere near the sealing surface, because any lubricant hands pressurized fuel a route out. Dip a stubborn end in hot water for a few seconds instead of forcing it.
Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly, firm without crushing the wall. If the tank side uses a self-locking coupler, push until it clicks and then pull back hard to confirm engagement; adding a clamp there accomplishes nothing. Return the hose to all its factory clips so it stays clear of exhaust heat and moving parts.
Refit the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting. Each cycle spins the pump and pressurizes the line, giving you a dry-engine look at both joints. Wipe them and watch closely for a bead forming. Then start the engine, let it idle, blip the throttle, and inspect once more with a clean rag. Several minutes of leak-free running earns the bodywork going back on. If the quad still acts starved after a dry install, the filter and strainer inside the tank module is the only other restriction in the path, and reaching it means pulling the pump assembly.
