Half of a successful fuel line job happens before a wrench touches the machine. Have the right hose, the right clamps, and a genuinely safe place to work, and replacing the line on a 2009 Prairie 360 4x4 is a straightforward afternoon task. Start improvising partway through with a tank full of gas draining onto the floor and it stops being fun in a hurry.

Assembling the Right Parts First

The Prairie 360 uses a carburetor fed by gravity through a manual fuel valve, so the parts list is short and inexpensive:

  • Fuel-rated hose in the correct inside diameter for this model, bought slightly long
  • New clamps to match what the factory installed, whether pinch style or small worm-gear
  • A fresh inline fuel filter if your machine carries one between the valve and the carburetor
  • An approved sealed container for drained fuel, plus a wide shallow drip pan
  • Nitrile gloves, safety glasses, a flat-blade screwdriver, pliers, a socket set, and a stack of rags

Do not substitute a generic vacuum or windshield washer hose. It softens, swells, and eventually delaminates in gasoline. Fuel-rated line is the only thing that belongs on this machine, and matching the original diameter matters more than matching the color.

Ventilation and Handling the Gasoline Itself

Gasoline vapor, not liquid fuel, is what actually ignites, and it is heavier than air. It rolls downhill across a garage floor and collects in low corners where you would never think to look. Work outdoors when you can, and if you must be inside, open the main door completely and put a fan at floor level moving air out. Kill any pilot light, portable heater, or shop light with an exposed hot element before you begin.

Wear gloves the whole time. Repeated skin contact with gasoline defats your hands and it absorbs readily. Cap your drain container as soon as you finish pouring into it rather than letting it sit open on the bench, and keep an extinguisher rated for flammable liquids in arm's reach.

Why the Line Went Bad in the First Place

Age is the dominant factor. The softeners compounded into fuel hose gradually leave the rubber, and a wall that started out pliable becomes hard and prone to splitting. The Prairie's engine heat cycles that hose constantly, and dry climates accelerate the process by pulling residual moisture out of the material. On a machine of this age, hardening is essentially guaranteed even with low hours.

Ethanol-blended fuel adds a second mechanism. Sitting in the line for months, E10 draws in atmospheric moisture and slowly degrades the hose lining, leaving gum and loose particles behind. Because the 360 feeds by gravity, anything that comes loose ends up at the carburetor inlet, where it plugs a filter screen or holds a float needle off its seat.

Signs That Confirm the Diagnosis

Before you tear into it, verify what you are chasing. A failing line typically shows a fuel puddle under the front of the quad after it has been parked, a persistent gasoline smell around the bodywork, and visible surface cracking or a chalky texture on the hose. On the running side, the symptoms mimic fuel starvation: bogging under load, a lean hesitation as you open the throttle, or the engine dying on a climb and firing back up once it levels out. Squeeze the hose along its length, and if any section feels stiff instead of springy, replace the whole run rather than patching it.

Pulling the Old Line and Fitting the New One

Shut the fuel valve first. The petcock on this carbureted Prairie makes the job far cleaner than the same work on a fuel-injected quad, which has no shutoff and requires relieving pump pressure and pinching the line closed before anything comes apart. Remove the seat and the center plastic panels so the full run from the tank down to the carburetor is exposed.

Loosen the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty into your container through its drain hose. That also drops the standing fuel in the line. Slide both clamps back, then twist the hose gently to break its grip on each barb. A hose that has gone hard should be slit lengthwise and peeled off rather than levered, especially at the carburetor, where the inlet fitting does not tolerate side load. Photograph the routing before it is fully free. This is a 4x4, so the line threads past front differential and driveshaft hardware that a two-wheel-drive machine does not carry, and getting it back into the correct guides prevents chafing later.

Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly, using a sharp blade for a square end. Fit the clamps on the hose first, then push each end fully onto its barb, past the bead, working entirely dry. Nothing lubricated goes on a fuel fitting — grease or oil on the sealing surface all but guarantees a slow seep once fuel is standing in the line. Warm water is the only softener a stiff hose end needs. Position the clamps behind the bead and tighten them evenly.

Verifying There Are No Leaks

Close the bowl drain screw, open the fuel valve, and give it a few minutes. Wipe both connections with a dry rag and study them under good light for any bead or dark ring forming. Then start the Prairie and let it idle so vibration can expose a joint that looked fine at rest, blipping the throttle a few times while you watch. Shut it down and check one final time before the bodywork goes back on.

Since the filter on this carbureted setup is an inline part you can actually see, replace it while the system is open. Injected quads bury that filter inside the tank with the pump assembly, which makes routine fuel path maintenance a much bigger job. Take advantage of the simpler layout while you have everything apart.
