Changing the Fuel Line on a 2009 Prairie 360 2x4

Ask a shop what the most commonly neglected part on an older utility quad is and rubber fuel hose comes up fast. It never appears on a maintenance reminder, it costs almost nothing, and it will happily leak gasoline onto a hot engine if you let it go long enough. On a 2009 Prairie 360 2x4 you can change it in an afternoon with hand tools, because this machine is carbureted, gravity fed, and fitted with a plain fuel valve rather than any kind of pressurized delivery system.
Removal, Start to Finish
Turn the fuel valve to OFF. The tank is now isolated, and only the hose between the valve and the carburetor still holds gasoline. Pull the seat and whatever fender plastic blocks your view of the carburetor inlet and the underside of the tank, because being able to see both ends of the hose at once turns this into a simple job.
Set the drain container beneath the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl and the hose drain completely. Only then start on the fittings. Slide each clamp back along the hose first; do not plan on reusing either one, since a worm screw of this age usually corrodes and strips while a spring clamp has lost most of its tension. Twist each hose end on its barb to break the varnish bond, then work it off with steady pull. An end that refuses to move should be slit lengthwise with a razor and peeled away rather than levered, which protects the fuel valve spigot and the carburetor inlet.
Note the path as the hose comes free. This is the two–wheel–drive Prairie, so no front differential or front driveshaft occupies the space beneath the frame and the run stays short with only a clip or two to reproduce. The 4x4 version threads past extra hardware and can take a slightly longer route.
The Reason a Hose Goes Bad
Flexibility in fuel hose comes from plasticizers blended into the rubber, and engine heat drives them out over the years regardless of how much the machine gets ridden. Each warm–up and cooldown cycle stiffens the wall a little, and eventually the rubber is hard enough that flexing cracks it. Bends closest to the valve and carburetor absorb the most movement and split first.
Two environmental factors pile on. Dry air pulls moisture out of the rubber and embrittles it from the outside inward, so quads kept in arid regions need hoses sooner. Ethanol–blended fuel comes at the inner liner instead, holding moisture against it and breaking it down, while long spells sitting unused with gas in the line leave gum and varnish that eventually restrict the carburetor inlet. Neither reflects any problem with the Prairie itself; it is simply how fuel hose ages everywhere.
Signs You Should Not Ignore
- A puddle or damp shadow on the floor beneath the engine after the quad has sat
- Gasoline odor around the machine that persists long after shutdown
- Fine cracks, a crazed texture, or a chalky gray tone on the hose surface
- A rigid section that keeps its flattened shape after being pinched
- Grit stuck in a dried ring at a fitting, marking a slow seep
- Bogging under throttle, a lean surge at higher rpm, or the engine dying as though empty with fuel still aboard
Anything wet stops the ride until it is repaired. The performance complaints deserve a hose inspection before a carburetor teardown, since a collapsing or crumbling line starves the carburetor in precisely the way a mixture fault does.
Parts, Tools, and Working Around Gasoline

- Rubber or nitrile gloves
- A sealable metal or fuel–rated plastic container for drained fuel
- Screwdriver, pliers, small sockets, sharp shears, and plenty of rags
The gasoline itself is the hazard worth respecting. Its vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and travels along the floor rather than rising and dispersing, gathering exactly where low ignition sources sit — a water heater pilot, a plug–in shop heater, a worn cord. Do the work outdoors whenever weather permits. Indoors, raise the overhead door completely, put a fan at floor level pushing air out, keep flames and sparks far from the machine, and lid the drained fuel immediately. Wear gloves, because gasoline strips skin oils and absorbs through bare skin readily.
Fitting the New Hose
Cut the replacement to match the length of the piece you pulled off. Slack does not buy safety; a long hose sags into frame tubing, rubs through over a season, or drifts toward hot engine surfaces. Slide each end fully onto its barb, seating it past the raised bead, and fit it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray must stay entirely off fuel fittings, because lubricant undermines the seal the rubber forms on the barb and can be pulled downstream into the carburetor. If an end resists, dip it in hot water for fifteen seconds and it will slide on easily.
Position the new clamps just behind the bead at each fitting and tighten them evenly. Firm is the target — an overtightened worm clamp cuts into the hose wall and seeds the next leak. Feed the line back through its factory guide, confirm a smooth kink–free sweep, and swing the handlebars through full travel to be certain nothing pinches or rubs.
Proving It Before You Ride
Close the float bowl drain screw, open the fuel valve, and let the system fill for several minutes with a clean dry rag positioned under each joint. Gravity feed makes this static wait a legitimate leak test, since a marginal connection weeps with the engine off. Look at the rag, then start the engine, let it idle up to operating temperature, and go back over both connections while everything is warm and vibrating.
One final task while you still have access. Rinse the small screen in the fuel valve and inspect the carburetor inlet for the rubber crumbs and varnish the old hose deposited. Both are reachable and serviceable on this Prairie 360, which is a genuine advantage over fuel–injected quads where the filter sits inside the tank as part of the pump assembly. Clear them, reinstall the plastics, and you have a fuel circuit you can trust for years of work.
