Owners of the 2009 Brute Force 750 4x4i tend to think of the big 749cc V–twin and the four wheel drive system as the machine's defining features, but the humble hose feeding fuel to the throttle bodies is the part that will actually strand you. It is also the cheapest thing on the quad to renew, provided you approach an injected fuel system the right way.

Depressurize First, Wrench Second

This model runs electronic fuel injection with a pump inside the tank, which means there is no petcock and the line holds pressure after the engine stops. Cracking a fitting on a live circuit is a genuine hazard, so the very first task has nothing to do with the hose.

Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the engine for a few seconds until it stumbles and dies. That burns off the pressure remaining in the line. Turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Because you have no shutoff valve, keep line–clamping pliers within reach to pinch a soft section closed and stop the tank from siphoning while a fitting is open. Carbureted quads let you skip all of this with a twist of a valve; this one does not.

Symptoms That Do Not Always Leave a Puddle

On a pressurized system a leak often evaporates before it drips, so smell carries more diagnostic weight than sight. A gasoline odor that lingers around the tank after shutdown deserves investigation even with a spotless floor underneath. Look for a wet sheen at a fitting or a ring of dust glued in place by dried fuel, which is the residue of a slow weep collecting grit over weeks.

Physical condition is easy to assess by hand. Squeeze the hose along its run: healthy rubber compresses and rebounds, while an aged line feels hard and holds its shape. Bend it and watch for hairline cracks opening at the flex point. Then think about behavior — a compromised or restricted line starves the injectors, and the machine responds with bogging under load, a stumble when you snap the throttle, or a lean feel that shows up at higher rpm.

The Aging Process Inside and Out

Rubber fuel line stays flexible thanks to plasticizers blended into it, and those slowly migrate out of the material over the years. The remaining wall grows stiff and shrinks slightly, losing its ability to seal tightly around a barb. Heat cycling from the V–twin drives the loss along, and a dry climate compounds it, since low humidity pulls moisture out of the hose wall and leaves it hardened well before its time.

The liner faces the opposite problem. Ethanol–blended pump gas attracts moisture and degrades the inner surface, doing the most harm when fuel sits motionless in the line for months instead of flowing through it. Brittle on the outside, soft and varnished on the inside, and quietly shedding particles toward the injectors is the ordinary condition of a hose this age.

Supplies and Airflow

  • Hose rated for fuel injection pressure in the matching inside diameter, not low pressure carburetor line
  • New clamps to suit the fittings on the machine, plus a quick–disconnect tool if a locking coupler is used
  • Line–clamping pliers in place of a petcock
  • Gloves and eye protection
  • A shallow drain pan and a sealed, gasoline–rated container
  • Screwdriver, pliers, sockets for seat and bodywork, clean rags, a sharp blade

Ventilation deserves real attention here. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and collects at floor level, which is where you will be working, so airflow needs to reach the ground rather than a window six feet up. Open the overhead door fully or move the machine outside, keep battery chargers and hot lamps out of the space, and shut off any appliance with a pilot flame nearby.

Freeing the Hose From Its Fittings

With pressure gone and the battery disconnected, take off the seat and the plastics covering the tank and the hose run toward the throttle bodies. Slide the pan under the area and keep a rag over each fitting as it separates, because residual fuel always remains in the hose even after a proper bleed down.

Move any clamp well back along the hose before touching the fitting, then twist the hose to break the varnish bond rather than yanking it. Quick–connect couplers get their locking tabs squeezed evenly and the fitting pulled straight off — never pry sideways, because plastic collars turn brittle with age and crack. A hose end that has fused should be slit lengthwise and peeled away. Note the routing before the old line is out; on this 4x4 chassis the hose passes front differential hardware and additional frame bracing, and the factory clips hold it clear of the driveline and hot exhaust.

Routing and Locking the New Line

Cut the new hose to the same length as the old one. Extra length is not a cushion; it lets the hose lean on something hot or rub a frame tube through. Clean both fittings, then push each hose end fully home until it bottoms against the shoulder, working entirely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone are all forbidden on a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a channel to creep out along. Hot water on a stiff end is the only aid required.

Place new clamps just behind the bead on each barb and tighten evenly to firm. If a fitting is a self–locking quick–connect, push until the collar clicks audibly and then tug firmly to confirm the latch has engaged; that style needs no clamp and should not receive one. Thread the hose back through every original clip before you consider it installed.

Cycling the Pump to Test

Reinstall the fuse or relay, Reconnect the battery, and turn the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit, letting you study both joints with the engine off and everything still dry. Check visually and then by fingertip. Start the engine and inspect a third time with a clean rag as it idles and reaches temperature, since heat and vibration expose a marginal clamp that seemed fine cold.

Reinstall the bodywork once nothing shows on the rag, take an easy lap near home, and look one final time. If fuel delivery still feels off after a clean, dry installation, the next suspect is the filter inside the tank, which on this 2009 Brute Force 750 is integrated into the pump assembly instead of sitting inline on the hose you just replaced.
