Nothing about the repair requires special equipment, but everything about it rewards preparation.
Assembling the Right Kit
- Fuel hose matched to the original inside diameter, cut from fresh stock rather than salvaged from a parts bin
- New hose clamps — screw-type or spring-style, sized for the hose you bought
- Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline strips the natural oils out of skin fast
- A sealed metal or fuel-rated plastic container for whatever drains out
- A small flat-blade screwdriver for the clamps and the carburetor float bowl drain screw
- A basic socket set for the seat and the bodywork over the tank
- Rags, and a razor blade for hose that has bonded itself to a fitting
An inline filter is worth adding to the shopping list too. Once you know an old hose has been shedding material internally, putting a filter between it and the carburetor costs almost nothing.
Handling Gasoline Without Drama
This is the part of the job that deserves genuine respect. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it drifts down and pools at floor level rather than dissipating upward. Keep the work area free of pilot lights, portable heaters, hot work lamps, and running chargers, and let the engine and exhaust cool fully before you start. Disconnect the battery negative terminal, keep an extinguisher within reach, and give the drained fuel a sealed container rather than an open pan left sitting on the bench.
How This Bayou Delivers Fuel
The 2009 Bayou 250 has no fuel pump and no pressurized circuit. Gasoline flows downhill from the tank through the petcock, along the hose, and into the carburetor's float bowl, where the float regulates the level. Because the valve is manual, closing it genuinely stops fuel flow — a fuel-injected quad has no such valve and forces you to pinch the line with special pliers instead. This is also a two-wheel-drive chassis, so the hose run is short and open, without the front differential and driveshaft hardware that adds clearance points to the routing on 4x4 utility quads.
Why the Original Hose Is Living on Borrowed Time
Rubber fuel line degrades from age, heat, and fuel chemistry rather than from mileage. The plasticizers that keep it supple slowly leach out, and the hose stiffens until engine vibration starts working cracks into the surface. An air-cooled single radiates its heat straight into the surrounding space, so the hose lives in a warmer environment than it would on a liquid-cooled machine. Dry desert air compounds the problem by pulling moisture out of the rubber and leaving it glassy.
Ethanol-blended gas is the other half of the story. Alcohol carries water into the fuel and slowly degrades the hose from the inside out, which is why a line can look serviceable and still be crumbling internally. Fuel left standing during a long off-season leaves varnish that both restricts flow and glues the hose to its barbs.
Watch For These Symptoms
Catch a failing hose before it leaves you pushing the quad home. The clearest signs are a small gasoline puddle under the machine after it sits, a fuel smell that never quite goes away, and visible cracking or a chalky texture on the hose itself. Performance symptoms follow the same pattern: bogging under load, hesitation off idle, a lean stumble at higher rpm, or an engine that behaves as if the tank is running dry when it is half full. A gritty ring of dust stuck at one of the fittings usually means fuel has been seeping and evaporating there for a while.
Taking the Old Line Off and the New One On
Turn the petcock to OFF and confirm it has actually sealed. Pull the seat and the bodywork over the tank, slide a pan beneath the carburetor, and open the float bowl drain screw to empty the fuel already sitting downstream. Slide both clamps well back along the hose, then twist each end on its barb to break the varnish bond before pulling. When a hose refuses to budge, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away rather than prying against a fitting you cannot easily replace. Take note of every clip and guide the old hose passed through.
Cut the replacement to the same length as the original, slip the clamps on first, and push each end fully onto its barb until it seats past the raised bead. Work it on dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all belong nowhere near these fittings, because a lubricated sealing surface gives fuel a path out and robs the rubber of the grip it needs. Hot water softens a stubborn hose end far more safely. Set each clamp just behind the bead and snug it until the rubber compresses slightly, no further, then return the line to its original clips so it stays clear of the head and exhaust.
Verifying the Work
Retighten the float bowl drain, open the petcock, and watch both joints for a full minute while gravity loads them with fuel. Wipe each fitting dry and look again for fresh dampness. Start the 2009 Bayou 250, let it idle, and inspect a third time with vibration in the picture. Finish with a slow loop around the property and a last check of both fittings and the ground beneath. If the machine still stumbles after a leak-free install, look at the petcock screen and the carburetor jets next, since old hose debris tends to collect exactly there.
