This model has no fuel pump and no pressurized rail, so once the valve is off, the system is inert and yours to work on.
How Fuel Line Deteriorates Over Time
Two separate processes conspire against the hose. From the outside, the compounds that keep the rubber flexible slowly escape, leaving a wall that has gone stiff and glassy. Heat off the cylinder head accelerates it, chassis vibration turns the stiffness into cracks, and a dry regional climate makes the whole thing move faster by pulling residual moisture out of the rubber. Cracks show up first where the hose bends closest to a fitting.
From the inside, ethanol in modern pump gas does the damage. Alcohol pulls in moisture and steadily degrades the inner liner, and a Rancher that sits for months with fuel in the line comes out the other side with a hose that has softened internally and started shedding material toward the carburetor. Both problems arrive together on a machine this age, which is why replacing an original line is maintenance rather than repair.
Symptoms That Point at the Line
Before condemning a carburetor, rule out the hose feeding it:

- Strong fuel smell in a closed building even with the machine cold
- Surface cracking, a swollen or spongy section, or a hose that stays flat after you pinch it
- Fuel residue drying into a grimy collar at the petcock or carburetor barb
- Bogging under throttle, hesitation on climbs, or a lean stumble that feels like a low tank
A hose that has collapsed internally or filled with gum restricts flow without leaking a drop. If the engine dies when you ask for full throttle and recovers at idle, suspect a supply restriction ahead of anything else.
Tools, Supplies, and a Real Word About Gasoline

Open the door wide or work outdoors, kill anything with a flame or a spark nearby, and let the engine cool before you start. Fuel spilled on a hot header is how a routine job goes badly wrong.
Removing the Original Hose
Start by turning the petcock to OFF. Take the seat off and pull the plastic that shrouds the tank so both ends of the line are visible and reachable. Position the pan, route the float bowl drain hose into your container, and open the drain screw on the carburetor bowl to empty it before you disconnect anything. That single step keeps a cupful of gasoline off the engine cases.
Work the clamps back along the hose first. Original line will be glued to the barbs by years of varnish, so twist it to break loose rather than yanking, and if it refuses, slice it open lengthwise and peel it. Prying at the petcock outlet risks bending soft metal you would rather not replace. On the way out, note every guide and clearance point. Being a 4x4, this Rancher routes its line around front differential and driveshaft hardware, and there is less spare room along the frame rail than a two-wheel-drive machine would offer.
Installing and Verifying the New Line
Trim the replacement to match the original, since surplus length only creates chafe points and kinks. Slide each end fully home over the barb bead, dry. Hot water on the hose end is the trick if it is stubborn; lubricants are not. Grease or oil on a fuel fitting keeps the rubber from gripping and opens a weep path past the clamp, so keep every sealing surface clean and dry.
Position new clamps behind the bead at both ends and snug them evenly. Reseat the hose in its factory clips so it stays clear of the exhaust and the front driveline, then close the float bowl drain screw.
Now let gravity test your work. Turn the petcock to ON and watch both connections fill. Wipe them dry, wait a few minutes, and look for any fresh moisture. Start the engine, let it idle so the fittings get vibrated, and inspect a third time. One more advantage of this carbureted setup is that the fuel filter sits inline where you can see it, rather than living inside the tank with the pump as on later injected Ranchers, so replacing it now while everything is drained costs you nothing but a minute. When the joints stay dry after a short ride, reinstall the plastics and the 2009 Rancher is ready for a full day of work.
