Spotting Trouble Before It Leaves You Stranded

Fitting the New Line and Confirming It Is Dry

Install the hose dry: grease, oil, and silicone spray all interfere with the seal and give fuel a route to weep past a clamp. If an end resists, dip it in hot water for a few seconds to soften it. Place new clamps behind the raised bead at each fitting and tighten them so they hold firmly without slicing into the rubber, then return the hose to its original path, clear of exhaust heat and shift linkage.

Open the fuel valve and simply watch. Give both joints a full minute of attention with good light and a dry rag before you reach for the starter. When they stay clean, start the engine, let it idle several minutes, and inspect once more as heat and vibration come up. Reinstall the seat and take a short loop close to home.
