What to Gather and How to Stay Safe

Ventilation is not optional. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles across the floor exactly where you will be kneeling with an open fitting in hand. Dip a stiff end in hot water for thirty seconds instead of muscling it.

Position the new clamps just behind the bead at each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm without crushing. Feed the hose through its original guides in a smooth arc with no kinks, and confirm clearance from the cylinder, exhaust, radiator, and front drive components before the bodywork goes back on.

Open the petcock and let gravity fill the line and bowl. Watch both connections for a solid minute, wipe them dry with a clean rag, and inspect again, since a dry surface reveals a slow weep that a wet one hides. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check once more at idle. Replace any inline filter between the petcock and carburetor while access is easy, because a plugged element produces the same lean, bogging symptoms you just resolved and fresh hose will not clear it.
