Working Through a Fuel Line Change on a 2008 Yamaha Wolverine 350

Late-production Wolverine 350s kept the simple mechanical layout that made the model popular in the first place, and that simplicity is a gift when it comes to fuel work. On a 2008 machine you are dealing with a carburetor fed by gravity through a short rubber hose, which means no special tools, no diagnostics, and no pressurized circuit to respect.
What the Fuel Delivery Path Looks Like
Fuel exits the tank through a manual petcock with ON, RESERVE, and OFF positions. From there it drops through a short rubber hose, held by a clamp at each end, into the inlet on the Mikuni carburetor. Gravity does all the work; there is no pump anywhere in the path. The carburetor's float bowl carries a drain screw at the bottom, and using it is the difference between draining fuel into a container and mopping it off the floor.
An injected quad would demand a different approach entirely: pull the pump fuse, relieve residual pressure, possibly release a self-locking quick-connect coupler, and accept that the fuel filter lives inside the tank out of reach. None of that applies here. The 2008 Wolverine 350 is the two-wheel-drive version of this platform, and with no front differential or front driveshaft crowding the area beneath the engine, access to the carburetor end of the hose is genuinely easier than on a 4x4 utility quad.
Deciding It Is Time
Inspect with the petcock closed and a flashlight in hand. You are looking for gasoline wetting the skid plate or the floor after the machine has sat, a fuel odor that lingers well beyond engine heat, cracking or a chalky cast along the hose, and dried residue rings at the fittings where fuel has repeatedly seeped and evaporated. Bend the hose into a gentle curve while you look, because cracks often stay invisible until the wall flexes.
Give equal weight to how the engine runs. Bogging on a climb, hesitation when you open the throttle quickly, and lean surging at steady cruise all suggest restricted delivery. When the inner liner starts breaking down it can collapse slightly or shed debris into the carburetor inlet, producing genuine starvation with a completely dry exterior. A machine that feels empty on a half tank is telling you something.
The Mechanics of Hose Failure
New fuel hose is soft because of plasticizing compounds mixed into the rubber, and those compounds gradually migrate out over years of service. The wall hardens, loses its ability to flex, and starts developing hairline cracks under ordinary engine vibration and chassis movement. Every heat cycle from the air-cooled cylinder pushes those cracks a little deeper. In dry, high-desert climates the rubber loses moisture faster and reaches that brittle state sooner.
Ethanol-blended pump gas works on the liner from the inside. Alcohol attracts water and slowly degrades the inner surface, and fuel left standing through a long off-season leaves gum and varnish deposits. The combined effect is a hose that hardens outward while deteriorating inward, which is exactly why replacing on age beats waiting for a visible split.
Assembling What You Need
- Gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, purchased slightly long
- Two new clamps plus a spare, spring clip or small worm-gear style
- Nitrile gloves, eye protection, and a stack of clean rags
- An approved fuel container and a shallow drain pan
- Flat-blade screwdriver, small pliers, sockets for the seat and body panels
- A sharp utility knife for hose ends that refuse to release
Ventilation is not a formality here. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles across the floor, right where you will be kneeling with an open fitting in your hand. Push the machine outdoors or open the door completely rather than trusting a window six feet up. Shut off pilot lights, unplug shop heaters, and keep all flame and sparks out of the area. Disconnect the battery negative cable before you break a connection, and let the engine cool fully first.
Removal, Installation, and the Leak Check
Set the petcock to OFF and pull the seat and the plastic panel over the tank. Put the pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, let the bowl empty into your container, and retighten the screw. Slide each clamp back along the hose and clear of its barb, then twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond before pulling it straight off. Prying sideways is how petcock spigots crack, so avoid the screwdriver. If an end has bonded solid, slit the last inch lengthwise and peel the rubber away from the fitting. Note the clips and guides on the way out.
Cut the new hose to match the old one exactly and push each end fully onto its barb, past the raised bead, working it on dry. Grease, oil, and silicone stay off fuel fittings without exception; anything slick on the sealing face creates a leak path and can carry contamination into the carburetor. A stiff end softens in hot water in about thirty seconds. Set the clamps just behind the bead on each fitting, tighten evenly to firm rather than crushing, and route the hose through its original guides in a smooth arc that clears the cylinder head and exhaust.
Open the petcock and let gravity fill the line and float bowl. Study both connections for a full minute, wipe them dry with a clean rag, and inspect again, since a dry surface makes a slow weep obvious that a wet one hides completely. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check once more at idle before reinstalling the panels.
One Last Item Worth Handling
If your Wolverine has an inline filter between the petcock and the carburetor, replace it while access is open. Sediment, rust, and varnish accumulate in that element over the years, and a restricted filter produces exactly the same lean, bogging symptoms you just cured by replacing the hose. Doing both at once means you are not pulling the bodywork off again in a month. Going forward, shut the petcock off whenever the machine will sit for more than a few days; keeping fuel out of the hose and float bowl adds real years to both parts.
