Fuel Line Work on a 2008 Grizzly 700 4x4 EPS

An hour of shopping saves two hours of frustration on this job. The 2008 Grizzly 700 EPS is fuel injected, which narrows what hose will work and adds a couple of tools most riders do not keep in a drawer. Get the shopping list right, then the actual replacement on this power steering equipped 4x4 goes quickly.

The Shopping List, Explained

Two specifications matter for hose. The inside diameter has to match the original so the hose grips its barbs properly, and the pressure rating has to suit fuel injection rather than low pressure carburetor feed. Soft carburetor hose may seep or balloon at the fittings under injection pressure, so it is the wrong part even though it sits on the same rack. Buy new clamps too, correctly sized to the finished outside diameter of your hose, since clamps that have spent well over a decade under the plastics have lost their tension.

Beyond that, you will want line clamping pliers, which are the substitute for the fuel shutoff valve this machine does not have. If the connection at the pump plate is a plastic locking coupler rather than a plain barb, a quick connect release tool lets you separate it without stressing a collar that has been aging for years. Add nitrile gloves, eye protection, a sealed fuel container, a shallow drain pan, a stack of rags, basic sockets, a flat blade screwdriver, and a sharp utility knife.

The Gasoline Safety Part

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It does not drift out an open window overhead; it sinks and spreads along the floor, gathering in low spots. That single property is why a closed garage containing a water heater, furnace, or shop heater is a bad place to open a pressurized fuel line. Do this work outdoors when the weather cooperates, or with the overhead door fully raised and a fan pushing air across the floor to move vapor out at ground level. Shut off every pilot light and heating element in the space, keep a fire extinguisher within reach, and carry fuel soaked rags outside rather than dropping them into a shop bin.

Injection, an In-Tank Pump, and No Petcock

The 2008 Grizzly 700 EPS delivers fuel electronically. An electric pump inside the tank pressurizes the hose and feeds the throttle body, where the injector meters fuel into the 686cc single. Nothing here is gravity fed, so reaching under the tank for a valve to close is a habit from carbureted quads with no equivalent on this machine. The circuit also holds pressure after shutdown, which means it has to be bled deliberately before any fitting comes loose.

The filter follows the same design logic. On this platform it is integrated with the in-tank pump assembly rather than hanging inline on the hose you can see. Draw the diagnostic boundary clearly: new hose fixes cracked, weeping, or collapsing hose, while a restricted in-tank filter stays a separate repair if delivery symptoms outlast the fresh plumbing.

Age, Climate, and Ethanol

Hose failure is a slow chemical story. Plasticizers in the rubber compound keep it flexible, and heat cycling drives them out of the wall over the years until the material is stiff and glassy. Once it can no longer flex with a chassis that twists constantly on rough ground, cracks open at the bends and at the shoulders where clamps grip. Riders in dry, arid regions reach that stage sooner, because low humidity draws remaining moisture out of the hose from the outside.

Ethanol blended pump gas works the bore instead, pulling in atmospheric moisture and gradually degrading the inner liner into gum and softened material. The damage is worst during long stretches when the machine sits and fuel stands motionless in the line. On the machine, that history shows up as a puddle on the skid plate, a strong fuel smell in the minutes after shutdown, visible cracking or a chalky bloom, a hard feel under a pinch, an engine that bogs or surges lean, and grime caked into a ring at a fitting. Remember that an injected machine can leak on the pressure side without dripping at all, since the fuel atomizes and evaporates.

Getting the Old Hose Off

Bleed the circuit before anything else. Pull the fuel pump fuse from the box under the seat, run the engine until it starves and stalls, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the side plastics so the tank, pump plate, and the entire hose run back to the throttle body are visible.

Slide the drain pan into position and lay a rag over the joint before you release it, since a bled line still carries fuel. Move the clamps well clear of the barbs first. A plastic quick connect wants its release tabs squeezed squarely and the coupler drawn straight off the nipple; levering it sideways will crack a brittle collar. Hose that has varnished onto a barb should be twisted gently to break the bond, and if it holds fast, slit it lengthwise and peel it away instead of prying on the fitting.

Note the routing before the original is gone. Four wheel drive brings front differential hardware into the picture, and the power steering unit adds more equipment around the front of the frame than a bare bones 2WD chassis carries, so the hose threads past additional clearance points and clips. Photograph them while the old hose is still in place.

Installing It and Testing for Leaks

Cut the replacement to the exact length of the old hose. Extra length is not harmless; it sags onto a frame tube where it chafes, or drifts toward the exhaust where heat shortens its life. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone stay off the fittings entirely, because lubricant on a sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a channel to creep along. Hot water for a few seconds is the right way to soften a stubborn hose end.

Seat new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug rather than crushed. A self locking quick connect gets no clamp: press it on until the collar clicks, then tug firmly to confirm the latch engaged. Feed the hose back through every original clip so it stays clear of the front driveline and hot surfaces.

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the hose, letting you inspect both joints while everything is still dry, which is when a slow weep is easiest to see. Wipe the fittings with a clean rag, look and feel for any fuel forming, then start the engine and check again at idle for several minutes before the plastics go back on.
