Rubber has a shelf life, and on a 2008 Grizzly 700 that shelf life ran out a long time ago. The original hose feeding this machine's 686cc single has spent well over a decade absorbing engine heat, road grime, and whatever fuel the local pump was selling. Replacing it is one of the cheapest insurance policies you can buy against being stranded miles from the truck, and it is a job an intermediate wrench can knock out in an afternoon with basic tools.
The Slow Chemistry of a Dying Hose
Fuel hose is a compound, not a solid, and the plasticizers that keep it flexible migrate out over years of heat cycling. What you end up with is a hose that has gone stiff and glassy instead of pliable. Every time the engine warms up and cools down, that hardened material expands and contracts against the barbed fittings, and eventually the surface develops hairline splits you can feel with a fingernail before you can see them.
Riders in arid country watch this happen faster. Low humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall, which accelerates the hardening from the outside in, and a Grizzly that lives in a hot shed rather than a cool garage ages its plumbing quicker still. Coming at the same hose from the inside is ethanol. Blended pump gas left in the system through a long off-season pulls water out of the air and slowly attacks the inner liner, so the hose can be softening internally while it hardens on the surface. That combination is why the calendar matters as much as the appearance on a machine of this vintage.
Confirming What You Are Working With
The 2008 Grizzly 700 is electronically fuel injected, and that single detail reshapes the whole job. There is no petcock beneath the tank to twist closed, because the fuel is moved by an electric pump living inside the tank rather than falling under gravity to a carburetor. The hose you are replacing is part of a pressurized circuit, and it holds that pressure for a while after shutdown. Cracking a fitting without bleeding the system first will spray fuel, not dribble it.
The other consequence of injection is the filter. Rather than sitting inline on the visible hose where you can spot it and swap it, the strainer and filter element are part of the in-tank pump assembly. That means a fresh hose fixes hose problems only, and if your Grizzly still stumbles afterward, the pump module is where to look next.
Reading the Symptoms Before You Are Walking
A tired line rarely fails all at once. Watch for these:
- Fuel pooling on the skid plate or dripping onto the floor beneath the machine after it has been parked overnight
- A sharp gasoline smell around the center of the quad, usually strongest in the first few minutes after you shut the key off
- Visible surface cracking, a chalky white bloom, or a section that feels hard and brittle when you pinch it
- Bogging under throttle, hesitation climbing a hill, or the engine acting starved as though the tank were nearly empty
- A dust caked ring at either fitting, which is the fingerprint of fuel that has been weeping and evaporating for weeks
Injected machines hide small leaks better than carbureted ones do. A pinhole on the pressure side often atomizes and evaporates rather than dripping, so trust your nose even when the floor is dry.
Tools, Parts, and a Word About Gasoline
Lay everything out before you touch a fitting:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline strips skin oils immediately
- A sealed metal or fuel rated container for whatever you drain
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter — ordinary low pressure carburetor hose will not survive here
- Fresh clamps in the correct size, plus a quick disconnect release tool if your Grizzly uses a locking coupler at the pump plate
- Line clamping pliers, which stand in for the petcock this machine does not have
- Sockets and a screwdriver for the seat and side plastics, plus rags and a razor knife
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so an open window six feet up does nothing. Work outside or with the door fully open, keep a fan moving air across the floor if you can, and get every ignition source out of the space, including pilot lights and shop heaters.
Extracting the Original Hose
Bleed the pressure first. Pull the fuel pump fuse from the box under the seat, crank the engine until it sputters and dies, then switch the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the plastics covering the tank so you can follow the hose from the pump plate back to the throttle body on the engine.
Slide a drain pan underneath and drape a rag over the first fitting you open, because a bled line still carries residual fuel. Back the clamps well down the hose before disturbing anything. If you find a plastic quick connect, squeeze the tabs evenly and pull it straight off the nipple rather than levering it sideways, since those collars grow brittle with age. Old hose usually bonds to the barb with varnish, so twist it gently to break that seal, and if it refuses to let go, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of putting a prying tool near the fitting.
Note the routing as it comes free. This is a 4x4 chassis, so the hose threads past front differential hardware and additional frame crossmembers that a two wheel drive quad does not carry. Photograph each clip and clearance point while you still have the original in place.
Installation and the Leak Check That Matters
Cut the new hose to the length of the old one and no longer. Excess hose sags into the frame, chafes on a crossmember, or drifts toward the exhaust. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone on a fitting all give pressurized fuel a path to creep along, so skip them entirely. If a hose end is stubborn, dip it briefly in hot water to soften it.
Seat the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly rather than crushing them. A self locking quick connect gets no clamp at all; push it on until the collar clicks, then tug firmly to confirm it has latched. Return the hose to every original clip so it stays clear of the front driveline and hot surfaces.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit while everything is still dry, which makes a weeping joint obvious. Wipe both fittings with a clean rag, look and feel for seepage, then start the engine and check once more at idle. Give it several minutes of leak free running before the plastics go back on and you head for the trail.
