How to Renew the Fuel Line on a 2008 Grizzly 350 4x4 IRS

Follow the fuel on a 2008 Grizzly 350 4x4 IRS and the whole repair reveals itself. Tank, valve, hose, carburetor. That is the entire delivery chain, and once you can see all four pieces, replacing the rubber in the middle becomes an ordinary maintenance task instead of something to put off another season.
Reading the Fuel Path on This IRS Model
The independent rear suspension on this version affects handling, not fuel delivery. Underneath, the 350 is carbureted: a mechanical fuel valve threads into the tank, one rubber line runs downhill to the carburetor inlet on gravity alone, and the carburetor's float bowl carries a drain screw for exactly this kind of service. No pump runs, no pressure builds, and there is no filter inside the tank. On a fuel-injected utility quad you would relieve system pressure before touching anything and might wrestle with a self-locking quick-connect collar; this machine asks only that you turn a lever.
The 4x4 driveline is what shapes the route. With a front differential and drive shaft beneath the frame, the hose runs slightly longer than on a two-wheel-drive model and threads past an extra clearance point. Photograph or note the path and every clip while the original hose is still in place.
Hardening, Dry Air, and Ethanol Attack
Two separate mechanisms end a fuel hose's life. The rubber compound depends on plasticizers for flexibility, and heat cycling from the air-cooled engine drives them off gradually. A hardened hose no longer flexes with the chassis, so it cracks at the tightest bend, usually just below the valve. Dry, low-humidity air accelerates the whole thing by wicking moisture out of the hose wall.
The second mechanism comes from the fuel. Ethanol-blended gasoline draws water into the system and degrades the inner liner, which softens and starts shedding fine material toward the carburetor jets. Stretches of inactivity make it worse, because evaporating fuel leaves gum and varnish behind that both constricts the bore and bonds the hose to its barbs. That is why an original hose on a machine this age frequently has to be cut off rather than pulled off.
Symptoms That Precede a Failure
Any of these means it is time:
- A puddle or damp patch under the machine hours after you parked it
- A gasoline odor near the tank that persists whether the valve is open or closed
- Fine cracks, splits, or a bleached chalky surface on the hose
- A hose that feels rigid and glassy when pinched, or soft and swollen at the fittings
- Bogging in the throttle, hesitation on grades, or lean surging as if the tank were low
- A grime ring at a barb, the dried residue of long-term seepage
A faint smell without a visible drip still counts as evidence. A pinhole on the upper side of the hose can weep enough to smell while the fuel evaporates before it reaches the concrete, and that crack widens with every ride.
Supplies, Containment, and Ventilation
Get all of this together first:
- Fuel-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, cut long and trimmed to fit
- New clamps or clips, since aged spring clips have relaxed
- Nitrile gloves and eye protection
- A sealed approved fuel can and a low catch pan
- Screwdrivers, pliers, sockets for the seat and plastics, and a sharp blade
- Rags and a work light
Handle the fuel with real care. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and travels along the floor toward pilot lights, battery chargers, and outlets near ground level. Work outdoors when the weather cooperates; otherwise open the door fully and shut down anything that sparks or cycles on its own. Pour drained fuel straight into a sealed container instead of leaving an open pan out, and keep a dry chemical extinguisher within arm's reach.
Emptying the System and Pulling the Line
Turn the fuel valve to OFF. Take the seat and any obstructing panel off, slide the pan under the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw so the bowl empties through its overflow tube, and close it again. The line is now essentially dry, which is exactly why a carbureted machine is friendlier to work on.
Retract the clamp at the carburetor end up the hose and out of the way. Rotate the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish grip, then work it off the barb with steady pressure. Hardened rubber should be slit lengthwise with the blade and peeled away rather than levered off, which spares the aluminum inlet. Handle the valve end the same way, freeing the hose from each clip in order and guiding it past the front drive components. While you have the access, inspect the valve screen for sediment. That screen is the serviceable filter on this carbureted 350, whereas an injected model keeps its filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly.
Measuring and Mounting the New Hose
Set the old hose against the new stock and cut square at the matching length. Extra hose creates trouble on a 4x4: slack can migrate toward the front drive shaft or a hot exhaust, and a raised loop can trap air in a gravity feed. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and do the entire assembly dry. Grease, oil, and silicone stay off the fittings, because a lubricated barb will not seal and vibration gradually walks the hose off it. Soften stiff new rubber in hot water for a few seconds if it fights you.
Place the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug without biting into the rubber. Route the line back through the original clips with a continuous downhill slope, confirm it clears the front differential hardware and exhaust, then tug firmly on both ends.
Checking Your Work Before Reassembly
Open the fuel valve and wait a full minute with a clean dry rag beneath each joint, looking for even a hint of moisture. Start the engine and let it idle while the float bowl fills, then inspect both connections and the ground under the machine. Blip the throttle several times to work the system and take a final look with your light, including the section near the front driveline. Once you have a confirmed dry install, reinstall the panel and seat, clean up any spilled fuel, and dispose of the drained gas and old hose properly. The 350 IRS should now start promptly and pull without hesitation.
