Fuel Line Renewal on the 2008 Grizzly 350 4x4

Turning one lever is the first and most important move in this whole repair. On a 2008 Grizzly 350 4x4 the fuel valve under the tank stops flow completely, and that single mechanical feature is why replacing the hose on a carbureted quad is so much less involved than doing the same job on a fuel-injected machine. Get the valve closed, and the rest of the afternoon is just clamps and careful routing.

Start by Shutting Off the Fuel

The 2008 Grizzly 350 is carbureted. A manual valve threads into the tank with ON, OFF, and reserve settings, one rubber hose carries fuel downhill to the carburetor inlet, and the float bowl underneath has a drain screw. With the valve closed and the bowl drained, the line holds almost nothing. Compare that to an injected utility quad, where you would begin by pulling the fuel pump fuse, cranking until the engine dies to relieve rail pressure, and possibly releasing a self-locking quick-connect collar. None of those steps exist here, and no line-clamping pliers are needed to hold back fuel.

Because this is the four-wheel-drive version, the hose shares space under the frame with the front differential and drive shaft. The path runs a little longer than on a 2x4 and passes an extra clearance point or two, so it pays to note every clip and bend before the old hose comes out.

Heat, Dry Air, and Alcohol

Three forces retire a fuel line. Heat cycling from the engine slowly bakes the plasticizers out of the rubber, leaving a hose that behaves like rigid tubing and cracks at its bends instead of flexing. Dry ambient air compounds it by wicking moisture from the hose wall, which is why machines in arid country harden their lines faster than their hour meters would predict.

Then there is the fuel itself. Ethanol-blended gasoline pulls water into the system and degrades the inner liner, softening it and releasing fine material downstream toward the carburetor jets. When the Grizzly sits with fuel in the line for months at a stretch, the light components evaporate and leave gum and varnish behind, narrowing the bore and cementing the rubber onto the barbs. On a hose this old, all three mechanisms have already had their turn.

Warning Flags on an Aging Line

Check the fuel path for the following:

  • Fuel pooling beneath the quad or running down a frame tube after shutdown
  • A gasoline smell that lingers around the tank even with the valve off
  • Hairline cracks, splits, or a dry chalky finish on the hose surface
  • Rubber that feels hard when pinched, or soft and swollen at the fittings
  • Bogging in throttle, hesitation under load, or lean surging like the tank is nearly empty
  • Dust packed into a ring at a barb from repeated seeping and drying

Do not chase jetting or ignition until you have ruled out the hose. A restricted line idles fine and then leaves the engine short on fuel exactly when a 4x4 is working hardest, which is the moment you least want a stumble.

Tool Roll and Safety Setup

Assemble this before you start:

  • Fuel-rated hose in the stock inside diameter, with a little extra for trimming
  • Fresh clamps or clips, since reused spring clips no longer grip properly
  • Nitrile gloves and eye protection
  • A sealed approved fuel can and a shallow drip pan
  • Screwdrivers, pliers, sockets for the seat and panels, plus a razor knife
  • Rags and a good work light for the area under the frame

The safety note here is real, not boilerplate. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and travels along the floor, collecting near pilot lights, battery chargers, and low outlets. Work outdoors when you can, and if you are stuck inside, open the door fully and shut down anything that sparks or cycles on its own. Cap the drained fuel right away and keep a dry chemical extinguisher where you can reach it in a step.

Working the Old Hose Free

With the valve closed, remove the seat and any panel that blocks the tank underside. Set the pan below the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, let the bowl empty through its overflow tube, and close the screw again. Now the hose is nearly dry.

Slide the clamp at the carburetor end well up the hose, twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish grip, and ease it off the barb. Rubber that has hardened onto the fitting should be slit lengthwise and peeled away with the knife — that is far kinder to the aluminum inlet than prying. Handle the valve end the same way. On this 4x4, pull the hose free of each clip in turn and past the front driveline clearance points rather than dragging it through, and take a look at the valve screen for sediment while it is exposed. That screen is your serviceable filter on a carbureted Grizzly, unlike an injected model where the filter sits inside the tank with the pump and never gets touched during a hose swap.

Length, Fit, and Clamp Placement

Measure the new hose against the old and cut square at the matched length. Slack works against you on a 4x4, where a long line can wander toward the front drive shaft or a hot exhaust surface, and where a high loop may trap an air pocket in a gravity system. Push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, and assemble everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone sprays have no place on a fuel fitting because they ruin the seal and let vibration walk the hose off. If the new rubber is stiff, dip the end in hot water for a few seconds.

Set each clamp just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly, firm without cutting into the hose. Route the line through the original clips with a steady downhill slope, verify clearance from the front differential hardware and the exhaust, then tug both ends to confirm they are locked.

Proving the Repair Holds

Open the fuel valve and wait a full minute with a clean dry rag beneath each connection, watching for any hint of moisture. Start the engine and let it idle while the float bowl refills, then inspect both joints and the ground under the machine. Give the throttle several quick twists and check again with your light, including the stretch that runs near the front driveline. Once everything reads dry, reinstall the bodywork, wipe up spilled fuel, and dispose of the old hose and drained gasoline responsibly before your 2008 Grizzly 350 4x4 heads back out.
