The rubber hose running from tank to carburetor is one of the cheapest parts on a 2008 Grizzly 350 and one of the few that can shut the machine down completely. It gets almost no attention until it leaks or starves the engine, and by then it has usually been failing quietly for a couple of seasons. Replacing it is a short job with a real payoff in reliability.

Old Rubber, Modern Gasoline

Two separate processes wear out a fuel line, and they work from opposite sides of the hose wall. Outside, repeated heating and cooling drives the plasticizers out of the rubber. The hose gets hard and loses its ability to flex, so vibration and frame movement start opening cracks at the tightest bends. Dry climates make this worse: arid air steadily pulls moisture from the hose, stiffening it well ahead of schedule.

Inside, the ethanol in today's pump gas goes after the liner. Alcohol pulls water into the fuel and degrades the inner surface, which softens and begins releasing fine material toward the carburetor. Add a stretch of months where the 350 sat with fuel in it, and evaporation leaves gum and varnish behind that both narrows the passage and glues the hose onto its barbs. A line can be brittle on the outside and gummy on the inside at the same time, which is why age matters more than appearance on a machine this old.

Reading the Machine for Symptoms

Look and listen for the following:

  • Fuel pooling under the quad or streaking down the frame after it has been parked
  • A gasoline smell around the tank that does not fade
  • Cracks, splits, or a gray chalky surface on the hose, especially near the fuel valve
  • Hose that feels rigid when pinched, or conversely soft and swollen at the fittings
  • The engine bogging under throttle, hesitating on hills, or running lean as though the tank were low

Those running complaints tend to send owners chasing jets and spark plugs first. If the hose is a decade old, start there instead. A partially collapsed or varnish-restricted line will idle happily and then starve the carburetor the second real airflow demands more fuel.

Fuel Valve, Carburetor, and What Sits Between Them

The 2008 Grizzly 350 is carbureted with a manual fuel valve under the tank. Fuel falls by gravity through one hose to the carburetor inlet, and the float bowl below carries a drain screw that makes emptying the system trivial. Because there is no pump and no pressure, you skip everything a fuel-injected quad would demand of you: no relay to pull, no cranking to bleed pressure, no brittle quick-connect collar to release. Simple clamps and a shutoff lever are the whole story.

This is the two-wheel-drive version, so the space under the tank is open and the run is short. Four-wheel-drive Grizzly models of the same generation carry front driveline hardware that pushes the line slightly wider and adds a routing point or two, so do not be surprised if a friend's 4x4 looks a little different underneath.

Parts and Precautions

Lay out the following:

  • Fuel-rated hose matched to the stock inside diameter, cut a bit long for trimming
  • Fresh clamps or clips, since reused spring clips lose grip
  • Gloves and eye protection — gasoline strips oil from skin fast
  • An approved sealed fuel container and a drip pan
  • Hand tools for the seat and side panel, a clamp driver, and a razor knife

Take ventilation seriously rather than treating it as boilerplate. Gasoline vapor sinks and travels along the floor, which puts it at the same height as water heater pilots, chargers, and outlets. Do the job outdoors when possible; otherwise open the door completely and shut off anything with an ignition source. Seal drained fuel immediately and keep an extinguisher within reach.

Removal Step by Step

Begin by turning the fuel valve to OFF, then pull the seat and loosen whatever panel blocks your view of the tank underside. Slide the pan beneath the carburetor and open the float bowl drain screw, letting the bowl empty through the overflow tube before you close it again. The line is now nearly dry.

Retract the clamp at the carburetor end and push it up the hose out of the way. Rotate the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond at the barb, then work it off with steady pressure. Hose that has hardened onto the fitting should be slit lengthwise with a blade and peeled away — that is far safer for the aluminum inlet than prying with a screwdriver. Do the same at the fuel valve, then look at the valve screen for accumulated sediment while you can see it. That screen is your serviceable filter on this carbureted 350; an injected model keeps its filter in the tank with the pump, out of reach during a hose swap.

New Hose, Correct Length

Lay the old hose next to the new one and cut to match. Resist the urge to leave extra length; a long line loops, rubs on the frame, or can rise high enough to trap air in a gravity system. Seat each end fully onto its barb until it stops against the shoulder, installing everything dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone on the fittings — lubricant ruins the seal and lets the hose migrate off the barb under vibration. If the new rubber is stubborn, dip the end in hot water for a few seconds to soften it.

Set the clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug without cutting into the hose. Feed the line back through its original frame passage with a steady downhill slope and tug both ends to confirm they are captured.

Leak Test and Cleanup

Turn the fuel valve back to ON and watch closely. Hold a clean dry rag under each joint for a minute and look for the faintest darkening. Start the Grizzly, let it idle while the float bowl fills, then check both connections and the ground under the machine again. Give the throttle a few quick twists and inspect one last time. Only once you have a confirmed dry install should the seat and panel go back on. Wipe down any spilled fuel, dispose of the drained gas and old hose responsibly, and your 2008 Grizzly 350 is ready for a full day of work without a fuel worry.
