When Suzuki introduced the 750AXi in 2008, the AXi suffix carried real meaning: this 722cc single was fed by electronic fuel injection rather than the carburetor the earlier big-bore KingQuad used. If you have worked on a carbureted quad before, put that experience aside for a moment. There is no valve on the tank to flip, an electric pump lives inside the tank, and the hose you are about to open holds pressure after the engine stops.
Sorting Out How This Machine Feeds Fuel
The pump on the 750AXi sits inside the fuel tank as part of a module that also carries the strainer and filter element. Because everything is bundled in that unit, the hose running from the tank up to the throttle body has nothing serviceable along its length — no inline filter to unbolt, no shutoff to close. That absence of a petcock is the single most important difference in this job, and it is why line-clamping pliers belong in your kit. As a 4x4, this KingQuad also runs the hose past front driveline hardware and extra frame structure that a two-wheel-drive machine would not have, so plan on tighter access. Trace the full run with a flashlight and count the retaining clips before you disturb anything.
What Wears a Fuel Hose Out
Age does the damage, not use. Heat off the cylinder gradually drives the plasticizers out of the hose wall, and once the rubber stiffens it can no longer flex with the chassis. Vibration crazes the surface, the crazing deepens, and eventually a fissure reaches the bore. Dry, low-humidity climates run that clock faster because ambient air continually pulls moisture from the outer jacket, which is why a hose in arid country can look decades old ahead of schedule.
The inside of the hose deals with ethanol-blended pump gas, which absorbs water and slowly degrades the inner liner. That effect is at its worst on a machine that sits through a long off-season with fuel still in the system. The finished failure is a hose that is hard and cracked outside while breaking down inside and releasing fine debris toward an injector orifice with almost no tolerance for it.
Warning Signs to Take Seriously
- Gasoline odor around the tank and seat that lingers after shutdown, while the system still holds pressure
- A damp patch, dried stain, or slow drip on the skid plate or garage floor
- Fine cracking, a chalky gray surface, or a section that feels rigid where it should still flex
- A ring of caked grime at a clamp, marking a joint that has been seeping and evaporating
- Bogging under load, hesitation off idle, or a lean surge that worsens as the tank drops
On an injected machine, a pressure-side pinhole often atomizes fuel so completely that nothing ever hits the floor. A strong persistent smell with no puddle is still a legitimate finding on this KingQuad.
Parts, Tools, and Handling Gasoline
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection, since a fitting can spit as it breaks loose
- A drain pan plus a sealed container rated for gasoline
- Hose rated for fuel injection pressure in the factory inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor line
- New clamps matching the style fitted, and a quick-connect release tool if the pump flange uses a locking coupler
- Line-clamping pliers, which take the place of the petcock this model does not have
- Sockets for the seat and side panels, a razor knife, a small flat blade screwdriver, and rags
Be literal about ventilation. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles across the floor, exactly where a water heater pilot or shop heater draws its combustion air. Work outdoors if the weather allows. Indoors, open the overhead door completely so air moves at ground level, shut down every flame and heating element in the building, and keep a fire extinguisher within reach. Disconnect the battery negative once you have relieved system pressure.
Bleeding Down and Removing the Line
Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the starter in short bursts until the engine stalls and refuses to catch. That consumes the pressure the pump was holding. Turn the key off, disconnect the battery, and remove the seat and the plastics covering the tank so both hose ends are accessible. Slide the pan into position and drape a rag over the first joint you open, because a bled line still holds residual fuel.
Move each clamp well back along the hose before pulling. Spring clamps release with a squeeze of the tabs; worm-gear clamps just loosen and slide. If the tank end uses a plastic quick-connect, press the release tabs evenly and pull straight back with no sideways leverage — collars that have aged for years crack when levered. Hose that has varnished onto a barb should be twisted a quarter turn to break the bond, or slit lengthwise with a razor and peeled away, which spares the throttle body spigot from a hard pull. Photograph the routing and every clearance point near the front differential before the hose is entirely free.
Installing the Replacement
Cut the new hose to the original length. Extra slack is not a benefit; it lets the line sag into the front driveline or rub a frame edge until it chafes through. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and install it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all give pressurized fuel a channel to creep along, so keep every lubricant off the sealing surfaces. A few seconds in hot water is the correct way to soften a stubborn end.
Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each spigot and tighten evenly, snug enough to seal without cutting into the wall. A self-locking coupler on the tank side takes no clamp at all; push it until it clicks and then tug firmly to confirm it has latched. Reseat the hose in every factory clip so it clears exhaust heat and the rotating front driveline.
Verifying the Job Before You Ride
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit, letting you inspect both joints before the engine ever fires. Wipe them clean and watch for the smallest bead of fuel forming. Then start the engine, let it idle, blip the throttle, and check a final time with a fresh rag. Give it several minutes of dry running before the plastics and seat go back on.
If the machine still feels short on fuel after a leak-free install, the filter and strainer inside the tank module is the remaining restriction. A new hose cannot help a clogged filter, and on the 750AXi that element is only reachable by pulling the pump assembly out of the tank.
