This quad uses a carburetor fed by gravity through a manual petcock, which means replacing that hose is a straightforward afternoon task rather than a job that demands specialty tools or a pressure-relief procedure.

Reading the Warning Signs

Fuel lines announce their retirement in several ways, and none of them should be ignored:

  • Gasoline pooling on the floor beneath the engine after the Bayou has sat overnight
  • A persistent fuel odor that hangs around the machine even hours after the last ride
  • Fine cracks, a chalky surface, or a hardened section you can feel by squeezing the hose
  • An engine that bogs climbing a grade, hesitates when you crack the throttle, or behaves as though it is running lean
  • A carburetor that floods or drips, which can point to debris shed by a degrading hose interior
  • Grime stuck in a damp ring at the petcock or carburetor inlet

Any single one of these is reason enough to replace the hose. Rubber fuel line is among the cheapest parts on the whole machine, and a slow weep near a hot air-cooled cylinder is not something to schedule for later.

What Age Does to Fuel Hose

Rubber fuel line ages on a clock, not an odometer. Over years, the compounds that keep it flexible work their way out, and the hose hardens until it can no longer absorb the vibration coming off a single-cylinder engine. Dry climates speed this up considerably; low humidity pulls moisture from the hose wall and leaves it brittle enough to crack the first time you flex it during other maintenance.

Modern ethanol-blended fuel attacks from the other side. Alcohol pulls water into the fuel and slowly breaks down the hose liner, so the inside deteriorates while the outside still looks acceptable. Fuel that sits for months at a time makes it worse, leaving gum and varnish that both restrict flow and cement the hose ends onto their barbs. On a 2008 machine, the original hose has likely seen well over a decade of this.

Gather Your Supplies and Set Up the Space

The parts list is short: replacement hose in the correct inside diameter, new clamps, and optionally a fresh inline filter. Add rubber or nitrile gloves, an approved container for drained fuel, a small screwdriver for clamp screws and the float bowl drain, a socket set for bodywork, and plenty of rags.

Take the ventilation seriously. Gasoline vapor sinks and collects near the floor, where it can find a pilot light or an extension cord spark long before you smell trouble. Work outdoors or with the door wide open, keep a fire extinguisher close, and let the engine and exhaust cool completely first. Disconnecting the battery negative removes one more potential spark source while your hands are wet with fuel.

Getting the Old Line Out

Start by rotating the petcock to OFF. This is the advantage a carbureted Bayou has over an injected quad, which has no valve at all and requires pinch-off pliers to stop flow. Verify the valve has truly sealed, since a petcock that has spent fifteen years in the ON position may pass a trickle. Remove the seat and the bodywork covering the tank and carburetor.

Set a pan below the carburetor and open the float bowl drain screw to empty the fuel already in the bowl and lower hose. With that gone, slide both clamps back and free the hose from the petcock spigot first, plugging the spigot with a rag if any residual fuel drains. Rotate the hose on the carburetor barb to break it loose rather than levering it off. Aged hose that has bonded to a fitting comes off cleanly with a lengthwise razor cut, which protects the fittings from damage. Because the 2008 Bayou 250 is a 2x4, the run is short and unobstructed, without the front differential and driveshaft hardware that lengthens the routing on four-wheel-drive utility models.

Fitting the New Hose

Lay the old hose alongside the new stock and match the length exactly. Extra length invites the line to sag against the exhaust or rub a frame tube; too little puts a permanent strain on both barbs. Slide the clamps onto the hose before you attach either end, then press each end fully home until it is seated past the raised ridge on the fitting.

Keep every lubricant away from this job. Grease, oil, and silicone spray all reduce the friction that helps rubber grip a barb, and a film on the sealing surface gives fuel a route to seep past the clamp. If the fresh hose is too tight to push on, soften the end in hot water instead. Set each clamp just behind the barb bead and tighten only until the rubber begins to bulge slightly, then route the line back through the original guides so it hangs clear of the cylinder head and header pipe.

Leak Check and Final Details

Snug the float bowl drain screw, then open the petcock and stand there watching. Gravity puts a head of fuel on the new joints immediately, so leaks reveal themselves within seconds. Dry both fittings with a clean rag and inspect them again a minute later for any fresh wetness. Reconnect the battery, fire the engine, and let it idle while you check a third time, since running vibration finds joints that look fine when the machine is still.

Ride slowly for a few minutes, then park and take a final look at both ends of the hose and the ground beneath. If your 2008 Bayou 250 still stumbles after a clean, leak-free installation, the debris the old line shed has almost certainly settled in the petcock screen or carburetor jets, and both deserve a look before you go chasing anything more complicated.
