Ten minutes with a flashlight tells you most of what you need to know about the fuel plumbing on a 2008 Rincon 680. This is a machine that gets used for real work, and the hose feeding its 675cc single spends its life near heat and vibration. A deliberate inspection now saves a tow later, and if the hose fails that inspection, the replacement is well within reach at home.

Giving the Line a Proper Once Over

Pull the seat and the plastic panel over the tank so you can see the full run of hose from the pump module to the throttle body. Work along it slowly with a light. Squeeze the hose in several places along its length: a healthy piece feels soft and rebounds when you release it, while a failing one feels rigid, chalky, or slick and hard like plastic tubing. Flex a bend gently and watch for fine surface cracks opening up.

Next, focus on the fittings, which is where most trouble starts. A ring of caked dust or dirt at a barb usually marks fuel that has been seeping and evaporating for a while. Look for staining on the frame below each joint, and check the skid plate for damp patches. Finally, note whether the clips are still holding the hose in position, because a line that has escaped its retainer and rubbed a frame tube can wear through from the outside in without any chemical degradation at all.

Injection Means No Petcock

Your 2008 Rincon 680 is fuel injected, and that shapes every step. An electric pump inside the tank delivers fuel under pressure to the throttle body, so there is no manual fuel valve to shut and no carburetor float bowl to drain. Pressure persists after shutdown and must be released deliberately before a fitting comes apart. The fuel filter sits inside the tank as part of the pump assembly rather than inline where you can swap it, and some connections use a self locking quick connect coupler instead of a clamp.

The chassis matters too. This is a 4x4 with independent rear suspension, so the front of the frame carries a differential and driveshaft that a two wheel drive quad does not. The hose is clipped along a path that keeps it clear of that hardware and of the exhaust, and reproducing that path is part of doing the job correctly.

The Real Causes of Fuel Line Failure

Time, not mileage, is what finishes a fuel hose. The plasticizers that keep the rubber flexible slowly migrate out of the compound until the hose cannot bend without fracturing. Repeated heating and cooling from the engine drives that along, as do sunlight and ozone. Machines kept in dry climates suffer first, because arid air draws moisture out of the hose wall and leaves a hardened, glazed surface years ahead of a quad living in humidity.

Ethanol blended gasoline handles the inside. The alcohol content absorbs atmospheric moisture, and fuel left standing through an off season attacks the inner liner while depositing gum and varnish at each barb. That is how a hose can pass a casual glance and still be shedding fine material toward an injector with a very small orifice. Symptoms of a line in that state include bogging when the throttle opens, hesitation under load, a stall that feels like an empty tank, a gasoline smell that peaks right after shutdown, and fuel puddling below the frame. Because the system is pressurized, escaping fuel can atomize and evaporate before it drips, so a persistent smell over a clean floor is still a real finding.

Assembling Parts and Working Safely

  • Fuel injection rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
  • New clamps sized for the fittings, and a quick connect release tool if a locking coupler is present
  • Line clamping pliers, since there is no petcock on this model to stop flow
  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, eye protection, and a stack of rags
  • A drain pan plus a sealable metal or fuel rated container
  • Small sockets, a flat blade screwdriver, and a sharp utility blade

Handle the gasoline with respect. Its vapor is heavier than air and sinks to floor level, where it is hardest to smell and easiest for a spark to reach. Open the door completely and put a fan on the ground moving air out of the space rather than relying on an overhead window. Shut off any appliance with a pilot light nearby, keep an extinguisher within reach, and cap your recovery container between pours.

Relieving Pressure and Taking the Hose Off

Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the starter for a few seconds until the engine stalls or will not fire. Switch the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Slide the drain pan under the work area and drape a rag over the first joint you intend to open, because a depressurized hose still holds fuel that will run out.

Slide each clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the fitting. On a quick connect, press the locking tabs squarely and pull straight off; levering sideways cracks plastic collars that have gone brittle with age. Twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond at the barb, then draw it off with steady pressure. If it has fused on, slit it lengthwise with your blade and peel it away rather than prying on the pump module or throttle body fitting. Photograph the routing and every clearance point past the front driveline before the old hose leaves the frame.

Fitting the Replacement and Proving It Dry

Cut the new hose to the same length as the original. A long piece chafes or kinks; a short one puts constant tension on both barbs. Push each end on dry until it bottoms against the shoulder, using hot water to soften stubborn rubber. Keep grease, oil, and silicone entirely away from the fittings — lubricant on a sealing face gives pressurized fuel a path out and lets the hose creep off under vibration. Place new clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten them evenly, snug without cutting the wall. Where a self locking coupler is used, push until it clicks and pull firmly to confirm the latch; that joint needs no clamp.

Return the hose to its original clips, refit the pump fuse, and Reconnect the battery. Cycle the key on and off several times without starting so the pump pressurizes the circuit while you inspect clean, dry fittings. Wipe both joints and look again, then start the engine and check a third time at idle with the machine vibrating. Take a short slow loop, shut down, and give both connections a final inspection before the panels go back on. If fuel delivery still feels weak after a leak free install, the in tank filter is the next suspect, since a new hose cannot cure a restriction inside the tank.
