Fuel hose is a wear item, and on a 2007 Grizzly 80 2x4 it is one of the least expensive parts on the machine to renew. It is also one of the most likely to be overdue. Small youth quads often accumulate calendar years far faster than engine hours, and rubber does not care whether the wheels are turning. This Grizzly is carbureted, gravity fed from a tank with a manual petcock, so the job requires no pressure relief and no special fittings.
Gathering Parts and Setting Up Safely
Everything you need fits on a small bench:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves plus eye protection
- A drain pan and a sealed container approved for gasoline
- Low pressure carburetor fuel hose in the correct inside diameter
- New clamps, or a clamp kit if you want a selection of sizes on hand
- A razor blade, clean rags, and a flat blade screwdriver for the float bowl drain
- Basic hand tools for the seat and front panels
Then think about the space you are working in. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it drifts down and pools at floor level exactly where your face ends up while reaching under the machine. A closed shed builds up fumes faster than most people expect, so open the door fully or roll the Grizzly outside and put a fan low to keep air moving away from you. Extinguish any pilot light in the same building, avoid work lights with hot bulbs, and keep the drain container capped when you are not pouring.
The Fuel Path on This Machine
The 80cc single here uses a small carburetor supplied entirely by gravity. Fuel exits the tank through a manual petcock, runs down a short rubber hose secured by a clamp at each end, and fills the float bowl. Three details make this easier than an injected quad: the petcock lets you stop the flow before you touch anything, the float bowl drain screw gives you a clean way to empty the carburetor, and the hose is standard low pressure line rather than a pressure rated assembly with a locking coupler.
The two wheel drive layout helps as well. There is no front differential or extra frame bracing to work around, so once the front bodywork is off you can geneRally see the petcock outlet and the carburetor inlet at the same time and reach both comfortably.
Why the Line Fails in the First Place
Rubber hose loses the plasticizers that keep it flexible as it ages, and heat from the engine plus years of temperature swings accelerate that loss. What starts as soft, easily bent material becomes hard and glassy, and then cracks at every bend. Riders in dry regions see this earlier, since air with very little humidity in it pulls moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the outside in.
Ethanol blended pump gas causes the other half of the problem. It carries dissolved water and slowly degrades the liner, and gasoline that sits unused for months leaves gum and varnish as its light fractions evaporate. On a youth machine that spends long stretches parked between riders, that stale fuel does more damage than actual use ever would, both restricting flow and shedding debris into the carburetor.
Symptoms to Look For
The clearest sign is a fuel puddle or damp spot under the quad after it has been parked with the petcock on, followed closely by a persistent gasoline smell in the shed. Get a light on the hose and check for hairline cracking, a chalky surface, and hardened sections that no longer compress between your fingers. A soft or swollen area right at a clamp usually means the inner liner has broken down even if the outside looks presentable.
Running problems belong on the list too. A Grizzly 80 that bogs when the throttle is opened, runs lean, or behaves as though it is nearly out of fuel with a full tank may be drawing air through a cracked hose or starving because varnish has narrowed the passage. Any of these findings justifies replacing the line rather than trying to nurse it along.
Removal, Installation, and the Leak Check
Turn the petcock off before anything else. Remove the seat and the front bodywork needed to reach both ends of the hose, photographing the routing and any clip that holds it. Slide the pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw to empty the bowl, then close it again. Move each clamp well back along the hose before attempting to pull the line off a fitting. Old rubber bonds to the barb with varnish, and rather than twisting a petcock spigot that has been on the machine since new, slit the hose lengthwise with a razor and peel it away.
Cut the replacement to the original length so it neither sags toward the exhaust nor pulls tight against the fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it stops against the shoulder, and work dry throughout. Grease, oil, and silicone all compromise the seal between rubber and metal and can migrate into the carburetor, so leave the fittings clean. Warming a stiff hose end in hot water for a few seconds makes it seat by hand without prying.
Install fresh clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug enough to seal without cutting into the rubber. Guide the hose along its original path with a gentle curve, clear of the exhaust and any linkage, and reinstall any retaining clip. Then open the petcock and watch both joints for a full minute before starting anything, since gravity alone will reveal a bad connection. Wipe each fitting with a dry rag, check again, then start the engine and inspect once more at idle. If your machine carries a small inline filter on the visible hose run, replace it while everything is apart, because a fresh line cannot compensate for a plugged element.
