How to Change the Fuel Line on a 2007 Grizzly 450 4x4

Rubber is the weak link in an otherwise durable fuel system, and on the 2007 Grizzly 450 4x4 it is also the easiest thing to fix. This machine came from the factory with a carburetor, not fuel injection, so the delivery side consists of a tank, a hand-turned fuel valve, one short hose, and the carburetor inlet. Nothing holds pressure, nothing requires releasing a coupler, and the entire job comes down to careful handling of gasoline and a couple of clamps done right.
Catching a Bad Hose Before It Strands You
The 450 will usually warn you. Pay attention to:
- A small puddle or damp trail under the frame after the quad has sat with the valve open
- A gasoline smell that hangs around the machine and refuses to clear
- Cracking on the hose surface, particularly at the bends, or a stiff glassy feel when pinched
- Bogging under throttle, a lean surge, or the engine acting starved with fuel still in the tank
- Dust packed into a wet ring at either barb where fuel has been seeping and drying
Because feed is by gravity, a marginal hose often stays dry on a low tank and weeps once it is full. Fill up, park level with the valve open, and inspect an hour later before you rule the line out.
Assembling What You Need
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- A lidded fuel-rated container plus a shallow drain pan
- Gasoline-rated replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter
- New spring clips or small worm-gear clamps
- Line-clamping pliers to hold fuel back while a fitting is open
- Flat screwdriver, sockets, a sharp razor blade, and clean rags
Handle the gasoline part of this seriously. Vapor is heavier than air and drifts along the floor, which is exactly where water heater pilots, battery chargers, and extension cords live. Do the work outside or with the door raised fully, shut off every ignition source in the space, and keep an extinguisher beside you rather than mounted somewhere across the shop.
Why the Original Line Wore Out
The rubber in fuel hose depends on plasticizers to stay flexible, and those compounds leave the material steadily over the years whether the machine runs or sits. Once they are gone the wall is rigid, and the flexing it still has to absorb near the valve and carburetor turns into cracking. Heat cycling from the engine speeds that hardening, and riders in dry, arid regions see it happen faster because low humidity draws moisture out of the hose from the outside in.
Ethanol blends work on the hose from within, degrading the inner liner and pulling water into the fuel. When a Grizzly sits for months with fuel standing in the line, gum and varnish accumulate and narrow the passage on top of the chemical wear. That combination means a hose approaching two decades of service is due for replacement whether or not it has visibly failed yet.
Removing the Original Hose
Close the fuel valve, then open the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty through the overflow tube into your pan. Take off the seat and enough front bodywork to reach the tank outlet and the carburetor inlet cleanly. Before disturbing anything, photograph the hose routing along with every clip that holds it.
Work the clamps back along the hose so they are clear of the fittings. A gentle twist breaks the varnish bond at each barb, after which the hose pulls straight off. When one is fused solid, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of prying, since both the valve spigot and the carburetor inlet bend far more easily than they appear. On this 4x4 chassis the line passes front differential hardware and additional frame crossmembers that a 2WD quad does not carry, so record those clearance points as the hose comes free.
Installing the Replacement Correctly
Cut the new hose to the length of the old one. Anything longer sags against the frame, chafes on a crossmember, or drifts toward exhaust heat, and all three shorten the life of a part you just bought. Push each end fully onto its barb and install it completely dry. Skip grease, oil, and silicone spray entirely — lubricant on a sealing surface hands fuel a path around the clamp that tightening cannot fix. Dip a stubborn end in hot water for a few seconds instead.
Set the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting so they cannot walk, and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without biting into the wall. Reseat the hose in the original clips, keeping it away from steering components and the front driveline, and swap the inline filter now if it looks dark or gritty, orienting the flow arrow toward the carburetor.
Proving the Job Before You Ride
Open the valve and let the machine sit for several minutes with a full tank so both joints carry real head pressure. Blot each connection with a clean pale rag and look for amber staining rather than waiting for a drip, since a slow weep colors cloth long before it forms a drop. Once the static check is clean, start the engine and check again at idle while heat and vibration expose anything a still test hides.
Run a short loop, shut down, and inspect one final time before reinstalling the plastics. If the 450 still stumbles with a fresh hose and a clean filter, the problem sits inside the carburetor at the float and jets rather than in the line you just replaced.
