Tools, Parts, and a Real Word About Gasoline

Work in open air or with the garage door fully raised. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it pools low and travels along the floor toward pilot lights, chargers, and power tools. Shut off anything that sparks or burns, keep an extinguisher at your side rather than on a far wall, and cap your drain container the moment you are done pouring into it.
How Fuel Hose Deteriorates Over Time
The rubber in a fuel line loses its softening agents year by year. As those compounds escape, the hose stiffens until it can no longer absorb the bending it sees at the valve and the carburetor inlet, and cracks start at those flex points. Engine heat cycling accelerates the process, and dry climates make it worse still by drawing moisture out of the hose wall and hardening it from the outside in.
The fuel inside does its own damage. Ethanol blends attract water and slowly degrade the inner liner, so material sheds toward the carburetor while the outer surface continues to harden. Fuel that sits unused for months compounds this with gum and varnish deposits that restrict flow. On a Grizzly 400 that has been in service since 2007, the original hose has simply been on the machine long enough to warrant replacement on age alone.
Reading the Machine for Early Warning
A hose rarely fails without hinting first. Look for:
- Fuel staining or a small puddle under the frame after the quad sits with the valve open
- A gasoline smell that will not clear from an enclosed space
- Cracks along the hose, especially near the bends, or a chalky hardened texture
- Bogging under load, a lean surge, or the engine acting like the tank is empty when it is not
- Dirt caked into a damp ring at either fitting
Gravity feed means these symptoms show up most clearly with a full tank. Top it off, park level, and check again an hour later rather than trusting a dry inspection on a low tank.
Working the Old Line Off the 400
Close the fuel valve, then loosen the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty through its overflow tube into your pan. Remove the seat and the bodywork that hides the tank outlet and carburetor inlet, and photograph the hose path with every clip in place before you disturb anything.
Push each clamp well back along the hose so it is out of your way. Twist the hose on the barb to break the varnish bond that years of service create, then pull it straight off. When a hose has fused itself to a fitting, slice it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away instead of levering — the valve spigot and carburetor inlet are thin and unforgiving. Since this is a 4x4, the line threads past front differential hardware and additional frame structure that a 2WD chassis lacks, so map the clearance points carefully as you go.
Fitting and Securing the New Hose
Cut the replacement to the original length and nothing more. Excess hose sags into the frame, rubs a crossmember, or wanders toward exhaust heat. Seat each end fully onto its barb dry — grease and oil on a sealing surface let fuel creep out past the clamp no matter how tight you crank it. A few seconds in hot water will soften a stubborn end enough to slide on without a fight.
Place the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each spigot and tighten them evenly, snug enough to seal without cutting into the rubber. Route the hose back through its original clips, keeping it clear of the steering linkage and the front drive, and change the inline filter now if it looks dark or clogged, with its flow arrow aimed toward the carburetor.
Verifying the Repair Before You Load Up
Open the valve and let the system stand for several minutes with a full tank so head pressure loads both joints. Wipe each connection with a clean pale rag and hunt for staining, not just drips — a slow weep shows as color on cloth long before it forms a drop. Fire the engine only after the static check comes up dry, then look again at idle while heat and vibration do their work.
Take a short shakedown ride, shut down, and inspect one last time before the plastics go back on. If a lean stumble survives a fresh hose and a clean filter, the next suspects are the float level and jetting inside the carburetor rather than anything you just replaced.
