Fuel Line Replacement on a 2007 Grizzly 350 4x4 IRS

The independent rear suspension version of the 2007 Grizzly 350 rides better than its solid-axle counterpart, but underneath the bodywork it drinks fuel through exactly the same simple plumbing. One rubber hose, one mechanical valve, one carburetor. After this many years, that hose has done its time, and swapping it is a straightforward job worth doing before it fails on you.

Independent Rear Suspension and a Simple Fuel Path

The IRS designation changes the ride and the rear end, not the fuel system. This 350 is carbureted, with a manual fuel valve mounted under the tank offering ON, OFF, and reserve positions. From there a single rubber line drops by gravity to the carburetor inlet, and the float bowl at the bottom of the carburetor has a drain screw. Nothing is pressurized, so you can forget the pressure-relief sequence a fuel-injected utility quad demands, along with the plastic quick-connect couplers and in-tank filter modules those machines use.

What does matter here is the four-wheel-drive layout. The front differential and drive shaft take up room beneath the frame, giving the hose a marginally longer path and an extra clip or clearance point compared with a two-wheel-drive model. Trace the routing before anything comes loose so the new hose returns to the same guides.

Why Hoses Give Out With Age

A fuel line wears out on a calendar, not an hour meter. The rubber relies on plasticizers to stay pliable, and heat cycling from the engine drives them out over the years until the hose behaves like stiff tubing. Once it stops flexing, ordinary vibration opens cracks at the tightest bend, typically right below the valve. Arid air makes it worse by pulling moisture out of the hose wall and hardening it from the outside inward.

The fuel does damage from within. Ethanol in modern pump gas attracts water and attacks the inner liner, softening it and releasing fine debris that heads for the carburetor jets. Any period where the machine sat with fuel standing in the line leaves gum and varnish behind as the light components evaporate, restricting the bore and gluing the rubber onto its fittings. Brittle outside, tacky inside, and narrowed in the middle is the standard condition of an original hose on a machine this old.

How the Machine Tells You

These are the warnings to act on:

  • Fuel pooling under the quad or streaking down a frame tube after shutdown
  • A gasoline smell around the tank that does not clear out
  • Surface crazing, splits, or a dry chalky finish on the hose
  • Rubber that feels hard as a pencil when squeezed, or swollen soft at the barbs
  • The engine bogging under load, stumbling on climbs, or running lean like the tank is nearly empty
  • Dust caked into a ring at a fitting from slow, repeated seepage

Owners frequently pull the carburetor apart before checking the hose. If the line is original, start with it — a restricted hose idles beautifully and starves the engine the second it needs volume.

Getting Set Up Before the Valve Closes

Stage all of this in advance:

  • Fuel-rated hose in the stock inside diameter, cut a bit long for fitting
  • Fresh clamps or spring clips, because reused clips no longer hold reliably
  • Gloves and eye protection
  • A sealed approved container for drained fuel and a shallow drip pan
  • Screwdrivers, pliers, sockets, a razor knife, and clean rags
  • A work light for following the hose past the front driveline

Respect the gasoline. Its vapor is heavier than air and drifts down to floor level where water heater pilots, chargers, and outlets sit waiting. Do the work outdoors if you can, and if not, open the overhead door completely and shut off anything that cycles or sparks. Seal the drained fuel immediately and keep an extinguisher where you can reach it without stepping around the quad.

Coming Apart at the Barbs

Close the fuel valve first. Remove the seat and any panel in your way, put the pan beneath the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw and let the bowl empty through its overflow tube, then close the screw. With the valve shut and the bowl empty, the hose contains almost nothing.

Push the clamp at the carburetor end well up the hose. Twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond, then ease it off the barb with steady pressure instead of a hard pull. When hardened rubber will not move, slit it lengthwise with the knife and peel it away, which protects the soft aluminum inlet from prying damage. Repeat at the valve, releasing the hose from each clip in turn and guiding it past the front drive components. Check the valve screen for sediment while you have the access — that screen is your serviceable filter on this carbureted machine, unlike an injected quad where the filter lives inside the tank with the pump.

Fitting the Replacement Without Lubricant

Lay the removed hose next to the new stock, mark it, and cut square at the same length. Slack is not insurance: on a 4x4 chassis it can wander toward the front drive shaft or the exhaust, and a high loop can trap an air pocket in a gravity system. Slide each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, and assemble the whole thing dry. Keep grease, oil, and silicone spray away from the fittings entirely, since anything slick prevents a proper seal and lets vibration walk the hose off the barb over time. If the new rubber is stiff, soften the end in hot water for a few seconds.

Set each clamp just behind the raised bead on its fitting and tighten evenly, firm enough to hold without cutting into the hose. Route the line through the original clips with an unbroken downhill slope, verify clearance from the differential hardware and hot surfaces, then tug both ends to confirm they are locked.

Final Leak Verification

Open the valve and hold still for a full minute with a clean dry rag under each connection, watching for any trace of fuel. Start the engine, let it idle while the float bowl refills and the machine warms up, then examine both joints and the ground beneath the quad again. Give the throttle several quick twists and take one last look with the light, including the stretch near the front driveline. Once everything reads dry, reinstall the bodywork and seat, mop up spilled fuel, and dispose of the drained gasoline and old hose responsibly.
