Replacing the Fuel Line on a 2007 Yamaha Grizzly 350 4x4

The 2007 Grizzly 350 4x4 has earned its keep on trails, fence lines, and food plots, and after this many seasons the original fuel hose is almost certainly the oldest rubber on the machine. Swapping it is a modest job with an outsized effect on reliability, and the four-wheel-drive chassis adds only a little extra navigation compared with its two-wheel-drive sibling.
Fuel Delivery on a Carbureted 4x4
Establish the fuel system before you pick up a tool, because everything else follows from it. This 350 is carbureted, with a manual fuel valve at the tank and a single rubber line carrying fuel by gravity to the carburetor inlet. The float bowl at the bottom of the carburetor has a drain screw, which becomes your best friend during this repair. There is no fuel pump running when the key turns, no pressure held in the line, and no in-tank filter module of the kind found on fuel-injected utility quads. If you have worked on an injected machine and remember pulling a pump fuse and bleeding pressure before touching a fitting, you can skip all of that here.
The 4x4 configuration matters for access rather than procedure. With a front differential, drive shaft, and the associated selectable drive hardware occupying space under the frame, the hose route tends to run slightly longer and pass a clearance point or two that a 2x4 does not have. Photograph the routing and note every clip before the old hose is fully free so the new one goes back exactly where it belongs.
Why the Hose Ages Out
Fuel line degrades from both surfaces at once. Externally, heat cycling from the air-cooled single drives the plasticizers out of the rubber. As those leave, the hose hardens and stops flexing with the frame, so vibration converts light surface crazing into genuine cracks, typically at the sharp bend near the valve. Dry climates speed this along, since arid air pulls moisture out of the hose wall and stiffens it from the outside inward.
Internally, ethanol-blended pump gas attacks the liner. Alcohol draws water into the fuel and softens the inner surface, which then sheds fine debris toward the carburetor jets. Fuel that sits for months while the quad rests leaves gum and varnish as it evaporates, restricting the bore and gluing the hose to its fittings. Hard outside, tacky inside, and narrowed in the middle is exactly what you should expect from a hose of this vintage.
Symptoms Owners Report First
Any of these justifies a new line:
- A fuel puddle or damp streak under the machine after it has been parked
- A strong gasoline smell near the tank that does not fade
- Visible cracking, splits, or a chalky gray surface on the hose
- Bogging under throttle, stumbling on climbs, or lean running that feels like an empty tank
- A ring of caked dirt at a barb where fuel has been weeping and drying
Take the running complaints as seriously as the leaks. A hose that has collapsed internally still supplies enough fuel for a smooth idle and then starves the carburetor the moment you ask the engine for real work, which on a 4x4 usually happens right when you need traction and torque together.
What You Need in the Garage
Have all of this ready:
- Fuel-rated hose in the correct inside diameter, cut long and trimmed to match
- New clamps or spring clips — original clips have relaxed with age
- Gloves and eye protection, since gasoline strips the oils from skin fast
- An approved sealed fuel container and a shallow catch pan
- Screwdrivers, pliers, sockets for the seat and plastics, and a sharp blade
- Clean rags and a light for looking up under the frame
Ventilation is not a formality. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it flows downhill and gathers at floor level where water heater pilots, chargers, and outlets sit. Work outside if the weather cooperates; otherwise open the door completely and shut off anything that cycles or sparks. Seal the drained fuel immediately and keep an extinguisher within reach.
Removal Around Front Drive Hardware
Turn the fuel valve to OFF. Pull the seat and enough bodywork to see the tank underside and follow the hose to the carburetor. Slide the pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty through the overflow tube, then close it back up.
Push the clamp at the carburetor end well back along the hose. Give the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond and work it off the barb with steady pressure. If it has hardened onto the fitting, slit it lengthwise with the blade and peel it away instead of levering on the aluminum inlet. Repeat at the valve. On this 4x4 take the extra minute to trace the hose out of every clip and past the front driveline clearance points rather than yanking it through, and check the valve screen for sediment while you have access. That screen is your serviceable filter here; injected quads keep theirs inside the tank with the pump.
Installing and Routing the Replacement
Lay the removed hose against the new stock and cut square at the same length. Extra hose is not a benefit — on a 4x4 in particular, slack can drift toward the front drive shaft or the exhaust, and it may loop high enough to trap air in a gravity feed. Seat each end fully onto its barb until it stops against the shoulder, installing dry. No grease, oil, or silicone on the fittings; lubricant defeats the seal and lets vibration migrate the hose off the barb. Warm stiff new rubber in hot water if it resists.
Position the clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten evenly. Route the line through the original clips with a continuous downhill slope, confirm it clears the front driveline hardware and any hot surfaces, and tug both ends to be sure they are captive.
The Final Leak Walkthrough
Open the fuel valve and stand there for a minute with a clean dry rag beneath each joint, looking for any darkening. Start the engine, let it idle while the bowl fills, and inspect both connections and the ground under the machine again. Blip the throttle a few times to work the system and take one last look with a light, paying attention to the section that runs near the front drive components. Once you have a confirmed dry install, reinstall the plastics and seat, clean up, and dispose of the old hose and drained fuel properly.
