Nothing on a quad ages more quietly than the hose carrying fuel to the engine. It has no moving parts, it never asks for attention, and it fails so gradually that most riders only think about it after finding a puddle. On a 2007 King Quad 450, that hose has been flexing and heat cycling for a long time, and understanding how it deteriorates is the key to replacing it before it strands you.

How the Rubber Breaks Down Over the Years

Deterioration comes from two directions. On the exterior, repeated heat cycles from the 450 single and years of exposure to air and ultraviolet light steadily leach the plasticizers out of the rubber compound. The hose loses elasticity, takes on a dull chalky appearance, and eventually develops hairline cracks at every bend. Machines living in dry, arid regions age faster in this respect, because low ambient humidity keeps wicking moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the surface inward. Once the material has gone rigid, everyday chassis flex over rocks and washboard is enough to grow those cracks into leaks.

The interior is a chemical story. Ethanol-blended pump fuel absorbs water and slowly attacks the inner liner of ordinary rubber hose. When a King Quad sits for months with that fuel standing in the line, the liner softens and swells while gum and varnish deposits collect at the barbs and downstream in the carburetor. This is the failure mode that fools people: the hose looks entirely presentable from outside while being soft internally, flow-restricted, and feeding fine debris toward the jets.

Confirming the Setup on This King Quad

The 2007 King Quad 450 uses a carburetor, which means a gravity-fed system with a petcock valve threaded into the base of the fuel tank. Move the lever to OFF and the supply genuinely stops, with no fuel pump to disable and no pressurized circuit to relieve. Fuel travels through a short rubber hose to the carburetor float bowl, and the bowl has a drain screw at its lowest point for emptying residual fuel. Because this is a 4X4 chassis, the hose has to work around the front differential housing, the front driveshaft, and the extra frame crossmembers four-wheel drive requires, so the run is tighter and the factory clips that keep it away from hot and rotating parts are worth respecting.

What a Failing Line Looks and Sounds Like

  • Gasoline pooling on the skid plate or shop floor after the quad has been parked with a full tank
  • A persistent fuel smell around the tank and front rack that outlasts the heat of the engine
  • Visible crazing, a chalky surface, a hardened stretch, or a spongy swollen section
  • A dirt-caked ring of dried fuel at either fitting, which marks a seep too slow to drip
  • Bogging when you open the throttle, hesitation at cruise, a lean stumble under load, or behavior that feels like an empty tank

Give the running symptoms equal weight. Gravity supplies all the pressure in this system, so a restriction that would be invisible on a pressurized setup will starve the float bowl on a long climb. Better pull on reserve than on the main setting points straight at the supply path.

Assembling What You Need and Handling Fuel Sensibly

Gather gloves, eye protection, a sealed fuel-rated container, a drain pan, replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter, a set of new pinch or worm-gear clamps, pliers, a flat-blade screwdriver, a razor blade, sockets for the seat and plastics, and clean rags.

Treat the gasoline as the hazard it is. Its vapor is heavier than air and settles along the floor rather than drifting away, so meaningful ventilation means an open garage door or working outdoors, not a cracked window overhead. Disconnect the battery, shut down any furnace or water heater pilot in the space, put away anything that sparks, and clean up spills immediately instead of letting them evaporate underfoot for the rest of the day.

Removal, Installation, and Verification

Turn the petcock to OFF, remove the seat and the plastic over the tank, and slide the pan under the carburetor before opening the float bowl drain screw. With the bowl empty, walk both clamps back along the hose using pliers until they are clear of the barbs.

Twist each hose end a quarter turn to break the varnish bond, then rock it off rather than pulling in a straight line. A hose that refuses to release should be split lengthwise with the razor and peeled away in halves — the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet are the parts you cannot afford to break. Follow the routing through its clips and around the front driveline as the old piece comes out, and take a photo for reference.

Cut the new hose to match the original exactly, no extra length to chafe against the frame or drape onto hot cylinder fins. Push each end fully onto its barb, past the raised bead, and do it dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone spray on the fittings, because lubricant on a sealing surface both invites a weep and lets the hose creep off the barb over time. Warm a stiff hose end in hot water if it needs help.

Set the clamps just behind each bead and snug them evenly, then route the hose through its original clips clear of the exhaust, front driveshaft, and steering. Open the petcock to ON and let full-tank gravity pressure sit on both joints for several minutes with a dry rag beneath each. Start the engine, recheck at idle, and take a slow lap before one last inspection while everything is warm. Two dry connections and no lingering fuel odor mean you are finished.
