How the Fuel Line Comes Off a 2007 Polaris Hawkeye 300 2X4

A few dollars of rubber hose is the difference between a reliable trail machine and a long walk back to the truck. The 2007 Hawkeye 300 2X4 is a carbureted, entry level utility quad, and its fuel plumbing reflects that: a tank mounted petcock, one length of rubber hose, and a clamp at each end. Because the circuit is unpressurized, replacing that hose is genuinely straightforward, and doing it before the old one splits is one of the smartest hours you can spend on this machine.

Where the Old Hose Loses the Fight

Two failure mechanisms run at the same time. From the outside, the plasticizers that keep the rubber soft leach out over years of heat cycling until the hose turns rigid. A rigid hose no longer conforms to the barb it sits on, so it starts to seep at the fittings and eventually develops cracks along the bends. Arid climates make this worse, since dry air pulls moisture out of the hose wall and hastens the hardening.

From the inside, ethanol blended fuel does the damage. Gasoline sitting in the line through a long layup draws in moisture and begins degrading the liner, and as the volatile fractions evaporate they leave gum and varnish behind. A Hawkeye hose can therefore look intact while shedding material toward the carburetor, which is why age alone justifies replacement on a machine from this era.

Symptoms That Send You Looking

Some warnings are obvious and some are not. Watch for a puddle of fuel or a dark wet patch under the frame after the quad has sat overnight, and trust a persistent gasoline smell around the seat and tank even when you cannot find a drip. Run your fingers along the whole hose: stiff, glassy sections and fine surface cracks tell you the rubber is done, and a dried crust of dust at a barb is old seepage rather than trail grime.

Drivability tells its own story. A hose that has hardened and partially collapsed restricts flow, so the engine bogs pulling a load, feels lean at higher rpm, or dies as though the tank were empty when it clearly is not. Since idle demand is low, the machine often idles perfectly and only misbehaves under load, which sends plenty of owners into the carburetor for no reason.

Assembling Tools and Working Safely

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves plus eye protection
  • An approved, sealable container for drained fuel
  • Fuel rated hose in the same inside diameter as the original, cut slightly long
  • New pinch clamps or small worm gear clamps
  • Flat blade screwdriver, needle nose pliers, razor knife, rags

Line clamping pliers are optional here because the petcock already gives you a shutoff, which is one of the practical benefits of a carbureted machine. What is not optional is ventilation. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools at floor level right where you are working, so roll the Hawkeye outside or open the door completely. Keep grinders, chargers, hot work lights, and pilot flames well clear, and put fuel soaked rags in a sealed metal can outside when you are finished.

Draining and Removal

Close the petcock and let the engine idle until it stalls, which empties most of the hose without any mess. Disconnect the battery negative cable, then remove the seat and any panel blocking access to the tank valve and the carburetor inlet.

Slide a catch pan into position and open the float bowl drain screw on the carburetor. Emptying the bowl deliberately prevents most of the spill you would otherwise get when the hose comes off. Move each clamp back along the hose, twist the hose on its barb to break the varnish bond, then pull it straight off. Anything welded on by age should be slit lengthwise with a razor and peeled away, never levered, because the petcock spigot cracks easily.

Note the routing before it is gone. On this 2X4 there is no front differential or front driveshaft crowding the path, so the run is short and open compared to a four wheel drive chassis, but the factory clips still matter for keeping the hose off the exhaust. A photo or two costs nothing.

Fitting the Replacement Properly

Trim the new hose to match the old one. Excess length lets it sag against the frame or interfere with steering, while a short piece keeps constant tension on the fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, and assemble it dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone spray on the fittings — lubricant on a barb ruins the seal and lets the hose creep off under vibration. Dip a stiff end in hot water for a few seconds and it slides on without any help.

Position fresh clamps directly behind the raised bead at each fitting so they cannot slip, and tighten them evenly until the hose is held firmly without being crushed. Reseat the line in every original clip and guide, keeping generous clearance from the exhaust and from anything that moves.

Leak Testing and Wrapping Up

Reconnect the battery and open the petcock, then let the machine sit while the hose fills. Lay a clean dry rag beneath each joint and give it several minutes of static observation; on a gravity fed carbureted system even a slow weep shows up this way. Fire the engine, examine both ends at idle, and blip the throttle to shake the assembly.

Take a short ride, then check both connections once more while the machine is hot, because thermal expansion and vibration expose a clamp that seemed adequate cold. Finish by looking at the filter screen behind the petcock and confirming the tank cap vent breathes freely. A blocked vent starves the engine in exactly the same way a bad hose does, and finding it now saves you from replacing a perfectly good new line later.
