The 2007 model runs a simple air-cooled single fed by a carburetor, and that carburetor is fed by gravity through a short length of rubber hose and a manual petcock mounted under the tank. There is no fuel pump, no pressurized rail, and nothing electronic in the delivery path. That simplicity is exactly why a hardened, cracked fuel line is one of the more common reasons a healthy Bayou suddenly runs poorly — and why the fix is well within reach of a rider with basic hand tools.
How Fuel Actually Reaches the Carburetor
Understanding the layout first makes the rest of the job obvious. Gravity does all the work on this machine: fuel leaves the tank, passes through the petcock, drops down a short hose, and enters the float bowl of the carburetor, where a float and needle valve meter it. Turning the petcock to OFF genuinely stops flow, which is a luxury owners of fuel-injected quads do not have. Because the 2007 Bayou 250 is a two-wheel-drive chassis, there is no front differential or front driveshaft crowding the area, so the hose takes a short, direct path with far fewer clearance points than a 4x4 utility model of the same era.
Why Rubber Hose Eventually Quits
Fuel line does not wear out from use so much as from time. The plasticizers that keep the rubber soft slowly migrate out, and the hose stiffens until it can no longer flex with engine vibration and frame movement. Heat radiating off the cylinder accelerates this on an air-cooled single, since there is no radiator shroud isolating the hose from the hottest part of the engine. Riders in dry, low-humidity regions notice hoses turning chalky and glassy years sooner than owners in humid climates.
Ethanol-blended pump gas works on the hose from the inside. Alcohol draws in moisture and slowly attacks the inner liner, which can leave the outside looking presentable while the interior sheds fine rubber particles toward the carburetor. On a Bayou that spends part of the year parked, that stagnant fuel also leaves gum and varnish behind, narrowing the passage and glazing the barbs at each end.
Symptoms Worth Catching Early
A tired line rarely fails all at once. Look and sniff for these before it strands you:
- A damp patch or small puddle of gasoline on the ground beneath the engine after the quad has sat
- A strong fuel odor around the tank area that lingers long after shutdown
- Visible surface cracking, especially right where the hose bends away from the petcock
- A hose that feels hard and brittle rather than pliable when you pinch it
- The engine bogging on hills, stumbling under load, or acting starved as though the tank were nearly empty
- Dust caked into a dark ring at either fitting, a telltale sign of slow seepage
Weeping at a joint is a warning, not an inconvenience. Gasoline dripping onto a hot cylinder or exhaust is the one failure mode on this machine worth taking seriously.
Setting Up the Job Safely
Pull everything together before a drop of fuel moves. You want nitrile or rubber gloves, a sealed metal or fuel-rated container for the drained gasoline, a length of replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter, a fresh set of clamps, a small flat-blade screwdriver, a socket set for the seat and fender hardware, and a stack of clean rags.
Ventilation is the real safety issue here. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so open the garage door fully or roll the Bayou outside rather than relying on a window. Keep every ignition source away: no work lights with hot bulbs, no space heaters, no smoking, and no battery charger running nearby. Let a warm engine cool before you begin, and keep an extinguisher within arm's reach.
Removing the Old Hose
Turn the petcock to OFF and confirm flow has actually stopped — a petcock that has never been closed can be gummed enough to seep past. Remove the seat, then whatever bodywork stands between you and the tank and carburetor on your 2007 machine. Slide a drain pan under the carburetor and loosen the float bowl drain screw to empty the residual fuel already sitting downstream, which keeps the mess to a minimum when the hose comes free.
Slide each clamp back along the hose before you disturb the fittings. Then twist the hose gently at the barb to break the varnish bond rather than pulling straight against it. If it refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with a razor blade and peel it off the fitting; a two-dollar hose is never worth risking a cracked petcock spigot or a bent carburetor inlet. Installing and Routing the Replacement
Cut the new hose to the same length as the old one. Too short puts a constant pull on both fittings; too long lets the line sag into the exhaust or chafe on the frame. Do not use grease, oil, or silicone on the fittings — lubricant on a sealing surface creates the exact path fuel needs to creep out, and clean rubber grips the barb far better. If the hose is stubborn, dip the end in hot water for thirty seconds to soften it.
Position new clamps just behind the bead on each barb and snug them evenly. Overtightening a worm-gear clamp will cut into fresh hose, so tighten until the rubber just begins to compress and stop there. Return the line to its original clips so it stays clear of the cylinder and header.
Confirming the Repair Holds
Close the float bowl drain, then turn the petcock to ON and simply watch for a full minute. Gravity feed means the line is under fuel pressure the instant the valve opens, so a bad connection shows itself immediately. Wipe both joints with a dry rag and look again for fresh dampness. Start the engine, let it idle, and inspect once more with the driveline vibration in play. Take a short low-speed lap, then park and check a final time before you trust the 2007 Bayou 250 with a long ride. While you are in there, a new inline filter and a fresh look at the petcock screen are cheap insurance against the debris an aging hose has already sent downstream.
