Time to Replace the Fuel Line on Your 2007 Recon ES

Fuel hose is a consumable, even though nothing on a 2007 TRX250 Recon ES advertises it that way. Understanding what has been happening to that short length of rubber for the better part of two decades makes the case for replacing it before it forces the issue.

What Has Been Eating the Rubber

Start with heat. The air-cooled 229cc single radiates a considerable amount of it, and every warm-up followed by a cool-down drives a fraction of the plasticizer out of the hose wall. Those are the additives that keep rubber flexible, and once enough of them are gone the hose feels stiff, takes on a glassy sheen, and starts checking at whichever bend flexes most. Ultraviolet light slipping past the plastics contributes to the same hardening.

Climate accelerates it. Machines that spend their lives in arid, low-humidity regions reach the brittle stage years earlier than those in humid country, because dry air keeps drawing moisture out of the compound from the outside inward. Then there is ethanol-blended pump gas working from the opposite direction. E10 attracts and retains water, and any stretch of the Recon ES sitting unused with fuel standing in the line lets that mixture soften the inner liner and leave gum in its wake. A hose can look acceptable and still be simultaneously brittle outside and swollen inside.

Verifying What This Model Runs

The 2007 Recon ES is carbureted. Its engine is fed through a carburetor, and the ES designation refers to electric shift gear selection rather than anything in the fuel system. That means no pump, no pressurized circuit, and no need to pull a relay or bleed pressure before you begin. A petcock under the tank offers ON, OFF, and reserve and serves as a positive mechanical shutoff. Standard clamps hold both hose ends instead of self-locking quick-connect couplers, and the carburetor float bowl has a drain screw beneath it.

This is a 2WD quad with a solid rear axle. No front differential occupies the space below the tank, so the hose run is short and largely exposed once the bodywork is removed — a real advantage over four-wheel-drive utility machines where the line has to navigate additional hardware.

Signals You Should Not Ignore

Look for these before the hose leaves you stranded:

  • A gasoline smell hanging around the machine hours after it was shut down
  • A wet ring or drip pattern on the floor beneath the left side of the engine
  • Cracks at bends, a chalky exterior, or hose that stays rigid under a squeeze
  • Dust caked into a band at either clamp, which is dried fuel from a slow seep
  • Bogging under load, a lean stumble, or symptoms that feel exactly like an empty tank

That last item is easy to misdiagnose. Since delivery is by gravity, a hose narrowed by internal swelling still supports idle while starving the carburetor at sustained throttle, which sends plenty of owners into a carburetor rebuild they never needed.

Supplies and a Real Safety Note

Have everything laid out first:

  • Gasoline-rated hose matched to the Recon ES original inside diameter
  • New spring clips or compact worm-gear clamps
  • Rubber gloves and eye protection
  • An approved fuel container plus a drain pan
  • Line-clamping pliers if the petcock seeps past its OFF position
  • Screwdriver, sockets, razor knife, clean rags, and a work light

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It sinks to the floor and creeps outward until it reaches a water heater pilot, a battery charger, or a stray spark, so ventilation at ground level matters far more than an open window overhead. Work outdoors or with the door fully open, let the engine cool completely, keep an extinguisher close, and dry used rags outside instead of sealing them in a can.

Disconnecting the Old Hose

Turn the petcock OFF, remove the seat, and pull the left side panel. Slide the drain pan beneath the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty through its tube so the fuel level drops below the hose. Push both clamps well back — the originals on a machine this age have usually lost their tension, so replace them either way.

Rotate each hose end on its barb to break the varnish bond, then pull it off. If an end has hardened solidly onto the fitting, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel the rubber away. Never pry at the petcock spigot; it grows brittle over the years and costs many times more than the hose. Note the routing clips and the clearance from the exhaust header before the old line is out.

Installing and Testing the Repair

Cut the new hose to the same length as the piece you removed and work each end on dry until it bottoms against the fitting shoulder. Grease, oil, and silicone all stay far away from the barbs; anything slick there creates a leak path and lets the hose creep off under vibration. Half a minute in hot water makes a tight end slide on with no lubricant at all. Set the clamps just behind each bead, tighten evenly, and return the hose to its original clips well clear of the exhaust and linkage.

Close the float bowl drain screw, turn the petcock to ON, and watch both joints for a full minute as fuel refills the bowl. Wipe the area dry so fresh seepage stands out, start the engine, and inspect at idle. Ride briefly and check once more warm, since heat expansion sometimes reveals a clamp that seemed perfect cold. Give the tank vent hose a squeeze while you are in there too, because it ages on the same schedule and a plugged vent creates starvation symptoms of its own.
