The 2007 model year introduced the 420 to the Rancher line, and this 2x4 foot-shift version is about as straightforward as a utility quad gets. It is carbureted, which is the single most important fact for this job. Fuel travels from the tank through a manual petcock and down a short rubber hose to the carburetor by gravity alone. No pump, no pressure, and a fuel valve you can simply turn off before you start.
Confirming the Layout Before You Start Wrenching
Lift the seat and you will find the tank with a fuel valve on the underside. Rotating that valve to the off position stops flow entirely, which makes a carbureted machine considerably friendlier to work on than an injected one. The carburetor also has a float bowl with a drain screw, and that bowl holds fuel even after the valve is closed. Draining it into a pan before you disturb the hose saves you a spill later. Being a 2WD chassis, the routing here is short and open, with none of the front differential hardware that 4x4 Ranchers thread their line around.
How a Fuel Hose Reaches the End of Its Life
On a machine that has been in service since 2007, hose age is the dominant factor. Rubber fuel line depends on plasticizers to stay flexible, and heat radiating off the cylinder slowly bakes them out. The hose stiffens, and once it can no longer flex with engine movement and chassis vibration, cracks form — usually at the bends or right where a clamp has been squeezing it for years.
Climate plays a part too. Ranchers that live in dry regions harden faster because low-humidity air keeps drawing moisture from the hose wall. And ethanol-blended pump gas attacks the inner liner whenever fuel sits still for long periods, softening the material and leaving gum that migrates toward the carburetor. Between the two, a hose can look presentable and still be well past due.
Signs It Is Time for a New Line
- A fuel puddle or damp spot on the floor beneath the machine after it has been parked
- A strong gasoline smell under the seat, especially with the valve left in the on position
- Fine cracks, a chalky surface, or a hardened section you can feel when you pinch the hose
- Weeping or staining at either clamp
- An engine that bogs under load, runs lean, or behaves as if it is low on fuel with gas still in the tank
On a gravity-feed system, a partially collapsed or gummed hose starves the carburetor gradually, so a bog that shows up on hills or under load is often the first performance clue.
Assembling Tools and Setting Up Safely
You need very little: rubber or nitrile gloves, eye protection, a drain pan and a sealed gasoline-rated container, plenty of rags, replacement hose in the correct inside diameter for this Rancher, fresh hose clamps or spring clips, a razor blade, a flat-blade screwdriver, and pliers for the clips.
Treat the fuel itself with respect. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and spreads along the floor, so it drifts toward pilot lights, heaters, and electrical connections down at that level. Work outside or with the garage door completely open, shut off anything with a flame or spark in the building, keep an extinguisher nearby, cap your container as soon as fuel is in it, and take used rags outdoors.
Getting the Old Hose Off
Turn the fuel valve to off and let the engine idle until it stalls, which empties much of the carburetor. Put your pan under the float bowl, open the drain screw, and let the bowl empty completely before closing it again. Remove the seat and any panel in your way so both ends of the hose are visible, and photograph how the hose sits before you disturb it.
Slide each clamp well back along the hose, then twist the hose gently to break the varnish bond at the fitting rather than pulling straight against it. Keep a rag under the tank-side connection, since the valve stops most but not all flow and the hose itself is still full. If a hose end refuses to release, slice it lengthwise with a fresh blade and peel it off the barb rather than risking damage to a fitting you are about to reuse.
Installing the New Hose and Checking for Leaks
Cut the replacement to the same length as the old piece. Extra length lets the hose sag toward the exhaust or chafe on the frame, while a short piece pulls at both fittings. Slide each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone; lubricant on a fitting keeps the joint from sealing and gives fuel a path to weep past the clamp. Warm water is the only assistance a stubborn hose end should get.
Set new clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and snug them so they grip firmly without cutting the rubber. Route the hose back the way it came, clear of the exhaust and any moving linkage. Now turn the fuel valve on and watch both joints for a full minute with a dry rag in hand and good light on the connections. Start the engine, let it idle, and check again as vibration and heat build. While you are in there, note that the fuel valve on this Rancher includes a strainer screen; if delivery still feels weak after a clean install, that screen is the logical next thing to inspect.
